Horizontal nystagmus identification with joint SAM segmentation and time series classification.

PURPOSE: Nystagmus is an involuntary jerky eye movement. It is an oculomotor sign of asymmetry in the vestibular pathway. With the rapid advancement of deep learning and its widespread applications, numerous deep learning-based methods for nystagmus detection have been proposed based on eye movement videos. This would enhance diagnostic efficiency. We propose a horizontal nystagmus detection model with joint SAM segmentation and time series classification. METHODS: In this study, a convolutional neural network is employed to eliminate the invalid interference frames in the video. Subsequently

Differences in Smooth Pursuit and Associated Saccades in Children With Two Common Types of Strabismus.

PURPOSE: The main characteristics of smooth pursuit are well-described, but few studies have analyzed performance in strabismic patients, especially regarding differences between types of strabismus. In this study, we analyzed smooth pursuit eye movements of children with intermittent exotropia (IXT) or accommodative esotropia (AET), compared with age-matched controls. METHODS: We included 58 children, aged between 4 and 13 years old (AET n = 24, IXT n = 18, and controls n = 16). After ophthalmological evaluation, eye movements were recorded using a Tobii Pro X3 eye tracker (120 Hz). Smooth p

Real-world evaluation of Armstrong's criteria in corticobasal degeneration: Phenotypic overlap and diagnostic challenges.

BACKGROUND: Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a four-repeat tauopathy with heterogeneous clinical manifestations. Armstrong's criteria involve a two-step diagnostic approach: first, classifying patients into five clinical phenotypes-probable/possible corticobasal syndrome (CBS), frontal behavioral-spatial syndrome (FBS), non-fluent/agrammatic variant primary progressive aphasia (naPPA), and progressive supranuclear palsy syndrome (PSPS); second, determining whether they meet the clinical research criteria for probable CBD (cr-CBD) or the clinical criteria for possible CBD (p-CBD), which are d

Recovery of depth perception in adults with abnormal binocular vision.

Our goal in this study was to determine the efficacy, time course and mechanisms underlying the improvement of stereo vision using 3D virtual reality (VR) games to improve depth perception in adults with a history of abnormal early visual experience due to strabismus, anisometropia and/or amblyopia. Participants engaged in 30 home-based training sessions, supplemented by 5 in-lab assessments to monitor progress. The training protocol utilized a diverse set of VR games targeting stereoacuity, anti-suppression, and binocular alignment. The stereo training games employed various depth cues to fac

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy PERK Haplotype B Selectively Translates DLX1 Promoting Tau Toxicity.

The unfolded protein response (UPR) sensor PERK exists in haplotypes A and B. PERK-B confers increased risk for tauopathies like progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), but the mechanisms distinguishing its function from PERK-A and contributing to its association with tauopathy remain unknown. Here, we developed a controlled cellular model for a pair-wise comparison of the two PERK haplotypes, finding their UPR functions nearly indistinguishable. Puromycin-based proteomics highlighted a subset of mRNA translation events that was permissible under the PERK-B-dependent, but not the PERK-A-dependen

Polymorphonuclear myeloid-derived suppressor cells inhibit natural killer cell function in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder via the CD155-TIGIT axis.

Natural killer (NK) cells and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are implicated in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), but their potential interplay remains unclear. In this study, we identified an increased frequency of polymorphonuclear MDSCs (PMN-MDSCs) and a decreased frequency of NK cells in NMOSD patients. In patients during remission, CD155 expression on PMN-MDSCs and TIGIT expression on NK cells were elevated, while NK cell activating receptors NKp30 and NKp46 were downregulated. The Expanded Disability Status Scale score correlated positively with MDSC and NKp46+ NK

Management of acute acquired comitant esotropia using prisms and vision therapy.

PURPOSE: Acute acquired comitant esotropia (AACE) once considered rare, is now becoming more prevalent. Surgery in these cases can get delayed when the strabismus angle varies or if the patient is unwilling. In such cases optical management and vision therapy can be considered. We present the outcomes of such management for AACE. METHODS: This retrospective study included a cohort of patients diagnosed with non-accommodative or non-neurological AACE, managed in our institute between January to October, 2023. Prisms were prescribed to patients experiencing constant double vision. All patients

Monocular ictal nystagmus in a dog: potentially a newly recognized focal seizure phenotype.

A 3-year-old, male neutered toy Chinese crested powderpuff dog was presented with an acute onset obtundation that progressed to status epilepticus. On presentation, neurological examination was localized to a right forebrain lesion. Bizarre episodes, consisting of disconjugate nystagmus of the left eye, medial strabismus of the right eye with convergent-retraction movements in both eyes, were recorded. Head magnetic resonance imaging revealed intra-axial multifocal lesions affecting the right fronto-temporal cortices and dorsal paramedian thalamus. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed a marke
