Addressing hypersensitivity in density functional theory for reliable machine learning.

Bipolar disorder is a chronic affective disorder that causes significant economic burden to patients, families and society. It has a lifetime prevalence of approximately 1.3%. Bipolar disorder is characterised by recurrent mania or hypomania and depressive episodes that cause impairments in functioning and health-related quality of life. Patients require acute and maintenance therapy delivered via inpatient and outpatient treatment. Patients with bipolar disorder often have contact with the social welfare and legal systems; bipolar disorder impairs occupational functioning and may lead to prem

Stem cell therapy for osteoradionecrosis of the jaws: mechanisms, advances, and clinical potential.

Osteoradionecrosis of the jaws (ORNJ) is a severe aseptic complication of high-dose radiotherapy for head-and-neck cancers, characterized by chronic jawbone necrosis, functional impairment, and poor responses to traditional treatments (eg, hyperbaric oxygen and surgical resection) that fail to address its root pathophysiology (microcirculatory impairment, bone metabolism dysfunction). Its incidence is 1.2%-40% in patients receiving >60 Gy radiotherapy, especially with concurrent trauma. In recent years, stem cell therapy has garnered attention as a potential treatment for a variety of bone-rel

Early Detection of Neuroinflammation and White Matter Damage Following Dorsal Spinal Nerve Root Sectioning in a Nonhuman Primate Model.

PURPOSE: Dorsal rhizotomy, or spinal dorsal nerve root lesioning, is a surgical procedure used to treat intractable nerve pain by selectively severing sensory afferent nerve roots. This study aimed to evaluate whether multiparametric MRI, including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), quantitative magnetization transfer (qMT), chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST), and relayed nuclear Overhauser enhancement (rNOE), can sensitively detect structural and biochemical changes in the intact spinal cord following a focal dorsal nerve root section in a nonhuman primate model. METHODS: In four squi

Risk factors for C5 nerve root palsy following surgery for cervical degenerative disease : a systematic review and meta-analysis.

C5 nerve root palsy (C5P) is a significant complication that can adversely affect postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing surgery for cervical degenerative disease (CDD). However, its risk factors have not been systematically identified. This study aimed to systematically evaluate and identify the risk factors associated with postoperative C5P in patients with CDD. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for studies published up to October 9, 2024. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using either

[Research progress on external cervical resorption].

External cervical resorption (ECR) is a progressive, osteoclast-mediated destructive disease of dental hard tissues that originates at the cervical region of the root. Characterized by its insidious onset and diagnostic challenges at early stages, ECR can lead to severe tooth structure loss and even tooth extraction. Although the precise patho-genesis remains unclear, it is thought to be associated with local stimuli, certain medications, and systemic conditions. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is currently the key imaging modality for three-dimensional assessment and accurate staging of

Management of Cervical Root Resorption on the Palatal Aspect Using Combined Internal and External Surgical Approaches: A Case Report Study.

External cervical resorption (ECR) is a progressive disease that occurs at the cervical region of the tooth, developing beneath the epithelial attachment. ECR is often asymptomatic and detected in routine radiographic examinations. This condition can significantly impact the long-term survival of the affected tooth. Therefore, early diagnosis and proper management are both crucial and challenging. We reported a case of ECR, managed through a synchronized and simultaneous treatment approach combining surgery and root canal therapy. The defect was restored with resin-modified glass ionomer. Acquired and Degenerative Conditions of the Cervical Vertebral Column in Horses.

The cervical vertebral column in horses plays a crucial role in movement, posture, and performance and disorders affecting it can cause pain, ataxia, or lameness. This review discusses major acquired (traumatic, infectious, neoplastic) and degenerative (osteoarthritis, foraminal stenosis, intervertebral disc disease) conditions. Acquired lesions often arise from trauma, bacterial infection, or neoplasia, with clinical signs ranging from neck pain to neurologic deficits. Degenerative disorders, particularly osteoarthritis of articular process joints, are common in the caudal cervical spine and

Prognostication of External Cervical Resorption Based on Heithersay's and Patel et al. Classifications: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: External cervical resorption (ECR) is a relatively rare form of tooth resorption. It is commonly classified either using two-dimensional imaging according to the Heithersay or cone-beam computed tomography using the Patel et al. CLASSIFICATIONS: Effective disease classification systems should provide categories that guide clinical decision-making and support the prediction of management outcomes. This principle should apply to the classification systems for ECR. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between Heithersay's and Patel's classification systems and the recently proposed

Oral Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia With Eosinophilia Exhibiting Cutaneous-Type Histopathologic Features: Clinical Regression Following Hormonal Withdrawal and a 50-Year Review.

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is a rare benign vascular proliferation, typically affecting the head and neck's subcutaneous tissue, with infrequent involvement of the oral mucosa. We report the case of a 30-year-old female patient on oral contraceptives who presented with a hyperplastic, reddish-purple, asymptomatic, and bleeding gingival lesion in the left maxillary gingiva. Clinical examination revealed a 10 mm periodontal pocket in the upper left permanent canine, with horizontal bone loss affecting the adjacent lateral incisor and canine. Blood analysis showed mild eos

Valve-sparing root replacement versus Bentall procedure with bioprosthetic valves in patients with aortic insufficiency: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The use of bioprosthetic valves in the Bentall procedure (bio-Bentall) has increased for its anticoagulant-free lifestyle benefits. Valve-sparing root replacement (VSRR) offers an alternative to the bio-Bentall with the preservation of native valves. However, comparative evidence between VSRR and bio-Bentall is scarce. This meta-analysis aims to address this knowledge gap. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted on databases from inception through December 2025. Studies reporting adjusted outcomes were included. The primary outcome was mid-term all-cause mortality and aortic valv

Safety assessment of a soft metal-free silicone peripheral nerve cuff implanted in rat models of neuropathic and inflammatory pain.

Peripheral nerve stimulation offers a promising alternative to pharmacological treatments for chronic pain, and recent advances in direct current stimulation enable selective inhibition of nociceptive activity. However, the safety of direct current delivery systems, particularly soft, metal-free nerve cuffs, remains poorly characterized under pathological conditions. This study evaluated the safety and biocompatibility of a silicone tripolar cuff for ionic direct current delivery in naïve rats and rodent models of neuropathic (spared nerve injury) and inflammatory (complete Freund's adjuvant)

Functional myotome mapping via triggered electromyography during intraoperative cervical rootlet stimulation.

Myotome mapping provides essential anatomical and physiological information in neurosurgical practice. However, current cervical myotome charts are based largely on heterogeneous sources with considerable inconsistency and limited electrophysiological validation. This study aimed to describe a cervical functional myotome map based on amplitude-based triggered electromyography (tEMG) during intraoperative rootlet stimulation in the intradural space in patients undergoing cervical spinal tumor surgery. We retrospectively analyzed 20 patients who underwent cervical spinal tumor resection with int

Two cases of tooth resorption in patients receiving denosumab therapy.

BACKGROUND: Multiple external cervical root resorption (MECRR) is a rare, aggressive form of root resorption affecting multiple permanent teeth at the cementoenamel junction. A possible association between denosumab (DMAb), a receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-inhibiting antiresorptive medication, and MECRR has been proposed, although evidence remains limited. CASE DESCRIPTION: Two retrospective cases of MECRR were identified, including a 72-year-old woman receiving DMAb for osteoporosis and a 65-year-old man receiving high-dose DMAb for metastatic prostate cancer.
