Synergistic functions of copper-based nanomaterials modified granular activated carbon: antibacterial activity, antibiotics adsorption, and impact of preceding chlorination on antibiotic resistance genes removal in tertiary treated hospital effluents.

UNLABELLED: Objective Condyloma acuminatum (CA), a common sexually transmitted disease caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, is closely associated with the abnormal proliferation and differentiation of host keratinocytes. Brusatol (BRU), a quassinoid compound derived from the medicinal plant Brucea javanica, has gained attention for its ability to regulate multiple biological processes through the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Protein Kinase B (PI3K/AKT) signaling pathway. It may also reduce Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) expression to induce ferroptosis in cancer cel

Persistent Median Artery Prevalence: A Cadaveric Study.

INTRODUCTION: The persistent median artery (PMA) is a blood vessel present during early embryonic development via morphogenesis. Due to its proximity to the median nerve (MN), the PMA is often associated with pain, especially related to carpal tunnel syndrome, anterior interosseous nerve compression, and hand motor dysfunction. As previous literature has reported a wide spectrum of data on prevalence, this cadaveric study aims to not only assess the prevalence of PMA but also collect vessel data in relation to the median nerve. METHODS: Cadaveric human forearms (N = 102) were dissected and id

Hidden overlap between heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy: Why it matters and how to avoid missing it.

Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CM) is increasingly recognized as a treatable cause of heart failure, while heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) has become one of the most common and heterogeneous heart failure syndromes worldwide. Growing evidence shows that a substantial proportion of patients diagnosed with HFpEF actually harbor unrecognized ATTR-CM. Missing this diagnosis may limit the effectiveness of HFpEF therapies and delay initiation of disease-modifying treatment. Screening studies consistently demonstrate that ATTR-CM represents an important subset of HFpEF

Case Report: Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis revealing an occult invasive ductal breast carcinoma.

UNLABELLED: Deep vein thrombosis of the upper limb is a rare but clinically significant condition, as it may represent the first manifestation of an underlying malignancy and often poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with no significant medical history, admitted for extensive deep vein thrombosis of the left upper limb that developed shortly after surgical decompression of the carpal tunnel. Postoperatively, she presented with marked swelling of the left arm, and Doppler ultrasonography confirmed thrombosis of the deep venous system. Thoracic

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist Use Is Associated With Decreased Incidence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Propensity-Matched Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are increasingly prescribed for glycemic control, but their relationship with diabetes-related musculoskeletal conditions remains unclear. This study compared rates of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), carpal tunnel release (CTR), and CTR complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with and without GLP-1 RA use. METHODS: Adult T2DM patients were identified using the TriNetX database. The primary analysis compared patients with versus without GLP-1 RA use. The secondary analysis examined T2DM patients with CTS,

Peripheral Nerve Ultrasound-guided Intervention: From the Basics to Sonosurgery.

Ultrasound-guided intervention of peripheral nerves is a new and promising branch of sonography. It offers minimally invasive therapeutic solutions with relatively little effort and has thus become an alternative to surgical procedures for managing entrapment neuropathies. It has shown considerable success in treating carpal tunnel syndrome, as well as other neuropathies caused by compression or focal strangulations. Sonosurgery, in particular, has become established as a validated reliable alternative to both open and endoscopic surgery. This review article critically examines the historical

The Effectiveness of a Preoperative Check-and-Consent Clinic in Reducing Day-of-Surgery Cancellations in Elective Hand Surgery: A Retrospective Service Evaluation.

Day-of-surgery cancellations (DoSC) waste resources, increase costs, and cause patient dissatisfaction. They are common and often preventable. With growing reliance on allied healthcare professionals and virtual clinics, patients can be listed without surgeon review or a Montgomery-compliant consent process, leading to last-minute changes. A surgeon-led "check-and-consent" clinic was introduced to reduce potential DoSC in elective hand surgery. A retrospective review was conducted of patients scheduled for elective day-case hand surgery and seen in the check-and-consent clinic (April 2022-Janu

Among Patients Seeking Care for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Variation in Symptom Intensity Is Associated More With Variation in Mindsets Than Variation in Compressive Median Neuropathy Severity.

BACKGROUND: Specialists recognize discordance between levels of discomfort and incapability and pathophysiology severity among people presenting for care of compressive median neuropathy at the carpal tunnel, but there is limited evidence regarding factors associated with this discordance. Using statistical techniques to identify subgroups of mental health factors and pathophysiology factors among people presenting for care of compressive median neuropathy at the carpal tunnel can help determine their relative association with levels of discomfort and incapability. We therefore asked: (1) Can

Clinical Application of Turnover Lengthening of the Palmaris Longus Tendon in Modified Camitz Opponensplasty for Severe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Camitz opponensplasty performed for severe carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is sometimes complicated during the dissection of palmar aponeurosis, and it is difficult to obtain sufficient length and strength of the transition tendon. In this study, we modified the Camitz procedure and devised a tendon-lengthening approach that does not involve the palmar aponeurosis. We evaluated this procedure clinically. METHODS: Our study included 11 patients with severe CTS and opposable thumb dysfunction. All patients underwent the same modified Camitz procedure including turnover lengthening of t

A scoping review of the impact of transverse carpal ligament sectioning on the thumb carpometacarpal joint: Does it increase the risk of ostearthritis?

PURPOSE: We aimed to review the effects of carpal tunnel ligament sectioning on the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint with the hypothesis that carpal tunnel release (CTR) may result in biomechanical changes at the thumb CMC joint predisposing an individual to pain and or accelerated articular wear. METHODS: This review was performed using the Pubmed and Medline databases from January 1, 1970 to January 7, 2023. Articles that examine the thumb CMC joint after CTR were categorized as cadaveric, clinical, or computational studies. The anatomy, pathophysiology, and treatment of both CMC arthritis

Finger Joint Releases in the Setting of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: Worthwhile or Risky?

PURPOSE: The literature remains pessimistic about surgery for finger stiffness in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), citing the risks of exacerbation and limited motion gains. This study reports the outcomes of joint-release procedures and details the surgical technique. METHODS: All patients with CRPS and contracted finger joints who presented with unyielding stiffness and consented to surgery were included. Patients underwent a minimally invasive release of the metacarpophalangeal and/or proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints. By protocol, all patients also underwent carpal

Treatment Monitoring of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Using Shear Wave Elastography: A Pilot In Vivo Study.

PURPOSE: Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a non-invasive technique for assessing median nerve (MN) stiffness in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This study evaluated whether SWE measurements of the MN improve after corticosteroid injection (CSI) and correlate with symptom improvement in CTS. METHODS: Ten patients (18 wrists) with CTS underwent SWE, grip strength testing, and completed questionnaires before and six weeks after ultrasound-guided CSI. SWE measurements included pressure and velocity in longitudinal/transverse planes at two locations: proximal to and at the carpal tunnel. Progression
