Constitutional risk factors for focal neuropathies in patients referred for electromyography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It is well established that patient-related constitutional features predispose to focal peripheral neuropathies. Some of these risk factors were investigated in common focal neuropathies encountered in patients referred for electromyography. METHODS: Gender, age, height and body mass index (BMI) were analysed retrospectively as risk factors for 11 focal neuropathies. In all, 9686 patients (age range 18-96 years; 58% women) were included from three different centres, with identical methods and equipment. RESULTS: High BMI was related to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), ul

Nerve entrapment syndromes in dermatology: Review and practical approach to treatment.

A good understanding of cutaneous nerve entrapment syndromes is important for physicians to provide early and accurate diagnosis and treatment. These syndromes have traditionally been managed with analgesics, antidepressants or antiepileptic medication but this approach is often inadequate and causes frequent adverse medication effects. With early diagnosis and treatment, many nerve entrapment syndromes can be successfully managed with physical, non-pharmacological approaches including stretches, exercises and physiotherapy.

Laparoscopic ileocecal resection in acute and chronic presentations of Crohn's disease. A single center experience.

INTRODUCTION: The terminal ileum is the most involved tract in Crohn's disease. The obstruction in this location is the most frequent complication. Acute or chronic presentations can occur. Surgery finds a role in the management of chronic strictures and in acute clinical presentations with complications not improving with conservative therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigate the outcome of patients with obstruction of the ileo-cecal bowel tract laparoscopically managed. It was analyzed the average operative time (OT), the conversion rate and the occurrence of re-operation due to surgica

A rare presentation of meralgia paraesthetica in limb girdle muscular dystrophy.

A 44-year-old female with paraesthesia and pain on the left anterolateral thigh who had been diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy by electromyography and muscle biopsy is presented. Neurological examination revealed atrophy of the proximal muscles of both shoulders, plus pseudo hypertrophy of both calves. Electromyography exhibited a myopathic pattern. Musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging demonstrated a fusiform nerve swelling below the inguinal ligament suggesting lateral femoral cutaneous nerve compression, consistent with meralgia paraesthetica. Treatment with a perineural injection

Two Interesting Cases of Meralgia Paraesthetica.

Meralgia paraesthetica (MP) is a condition originally described by Bernhardt in 1878 and was eventually named by Roth in 1895. It is caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) resulting in varying types of discomfort. Severity of the symptoms can range from mildly uncomfortable to painfully disabling. In this article we discuss 2 patients with a LFCN injury occurring as a result of laparoscopic ventral rectopexy (LVR). The first patient is a 46-year-old female who reported pain and dysesthesia in the left groin and the anterolateral thigh, 2 days post LCR. A conservati

[Common and not so common nerve entrapment syndromes: diagnostics, clinical aspects and therapy].

Altogether, nerve entrapment syndromes have a very high incidence. Neurological deficits attributable to a focal peripheral nerve lesion lead to the clinical diagnosis. Frequently, pain is the dominant symptom but is often not confined to the nerve supply area. Electroneurography, electromyography, and more recently also neurosonography are the most important diagnostic tools. In most patients surgical therapy is necessary, which should be carried out in a timely manner. The entrapment syndromes discussed are suprascapular nerve entrapment, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, mera

Meralgia paraesthetica: Ultrasound-guided injection at multiple levels with 12-month follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound (US)-guided injections around the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) at different levels in meralgia paraesthetica (MP) patients. METHODS: The study was approved by the university ethics committee and informed oral and written consent were obtained from all patients. Between June 2008 and August 2013, 20 patients with symptoms of MP, including nine men (mean age, 61.33 years) and 11 women (mean age 61.18 years), were treated with US-guided injection of steroids along the LFCN at three different levels in a mean of 2.25 sessions. Anterior superior iliac spine avulsion fracture presenting as meralgia paraesthetica in an adolescent sprinter.

OBJECTIVE: We report here a rare case of anterior superior iliac spine avulsion fracture that presented initially as meralgia paraesthetica. CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old male sprinter presented with anterior superior iliac spine avulsion fracture, which was not observed on initial plain radiograph of the hip, but was diagnosed by ultrasound. Both clinical presentations and electrophysiological studies indicated meralgia paraesthetica. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve of the thigh was probably compressed by an inguinal haematoma resulting from sartorius muscle strain, which was detected on mu

Meralgia paraesthetica: Laparoscopic surgery as a cause then and a cure now.

Meralgia Paraesthetica (MP) is a rare condition, in which the patient experiences a burning sensation along the distribution of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve of the thigh, due to entrapment neuropathy at the lateral end of the inguinal ligament as it exits the pelvis. There are several causes of this condition including laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty. Diagnosed clinically, intervention is indicated for failed conservative measures. We herewith report a patient with MP and symptomatic cholelithiasis, treated for both laparoscopically. This is the third reported case in the literature

Meralgia paresthetica: 3-Tesla magnetic resonance neurography.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic accuracy and observer performance of 3-Tesla magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) in the evaluation of meralgia paresthetica (MP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two independent readers were blinded to the clinical diagnosis and evaluated the MRN studies of the pelvis of 11 patients with MP and 28 control participants. In each study, the lateral femoral cutaneous nerves were assessed for signal alteration and/or neuroma formation, indicating lateral femoral cutaneous neuropathy, at various levels along their course. Intra- and inter-observer reliability was evaluat

Clinical effectiveness of electroacupuncture in meralgia paraesthetica: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Meralgia paraesthetica is a fairly common condition resulting from entrapment of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. I have found that acupuncture produces a rapid improvement, sometimes effecting a cure, after only one or two treatments. I therefore invited referrals in order to collect a case series. METHODS: A series of 10 patients, which included two who had refused surgery, but excluded those with significant lumbar spine problems, were treated. Visual Analogue Scale pain scores and analgesic intake were recorded weekly, starting before treatment. Four patients were receivin

Meralgia paraesthetica: an unusual complication in peritoneal dialysis.

A 53-year-old woman with a history of end-stage renal disease on peritoneal dialysis (PD) presented with a 3-month history of intermittent numbness and paraesthesia over the anterior aspect of the right thigh. The patient noticed the pain was worse on walking and related to dialysis sessions. An examination revealed no neurovascular abnormalities or abdominal masses. However, there was subjective paraesthesia in the distribution of the right lateral cutaneous nerve. Subsequent nerve conduction studies revealed the cause of the patient's symptoms. She was diagnosed with meralgia paraesthetica.

Treatment for meralgia paraesthetica.

BACKGROUND: Meralgia paraesthetica is a clinical syndrome for which a number of treatments are in common use, including conservative measures, injection of corticosteroid with local anaesthetic and surgery. We aimed to examine the evidence for the relative efficacy of these interventions. This review was first published in 2008. Searches were updated in 2010 and 2012. OBJECTIVES: To assess the relative efficacy of commonly used treatments for meralgia paraesthetica. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Specialized Register (1 October 2012), CENTRAL (2012, issu
