OBJECTIVE: Resection of common peroneal nerve (CPN) schwannomas is generally believed to be associated with a high risk of postoperative deficit, especially the chance for development of a foot drop. The goal of this study was to investigate the surgical results for resection of schwannomas from the CPN around the knee and specifically the chance of developing a postoperative motor deficit.
METHODS: Data from 36 patients with sporadic schwannomas and 8 patients with schwannomatosis (12 schwannomas total) treated at two centers were retrospectively analyzed. For sporadic cases, different locat

Background and Objectives: The interspace between the popliteal artery and the posterior capsule of the knee (iPACK) block has been widely used in perioperative settings to control posterior knee pain and can additionally be used for chronic knee pain. In this cadaveric study, we aimed to investigate the needle tip position and its proximity to the articular branch of the tibial nerve (ABTN) during an iPACK-targeted radiofrequency procedure. Materials and Methods: An ultrasound-guided iPACK block was performed on 20 knees of 10 cadavers. We injected 0.1 mL each of blue and green gelatinous dye

BACKGROUND: There are several documented variations of the sural nerve noted within the literature. This cadaveric study was conducted to provide a surgical perspective to either directly addressing the sural nerve, or avoiding it depending on the injury or pathology being surgically addressed.
METHODS: Twenty-five preserved cadaveric limbs were dissected from the popliteal fossa to the foot. Three locations of the course of the sural nerve data were analyzed. The first location (M1) was from the head of the fibula to the sural nerve. The second location (M3) was from 2.54 cm proximal to the

UNLABELLED: Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (T-GCT) and pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) are interchangeable terms for an uncommon benign proliferation of synovial tissue1-6. Although neoplastic and inflammatory origins have been hypothesized, the etiology of this condition is unknown. There is controversy regarding surgical treatment, as the open and arthroscopic approaches to synovectomy have shown comparable reported outcomes in the literature5-7. However, direct comparison of these 2 operative methods is problematic because of selective bias in the existing literature and the lack of

BACKGROUND: One of the causes of foot drop is compression of the common peroneal nerve caused by space-occupying lesions such as a synovial cyst or a ganglion cyst. Most previous reports have involved compressive common peroneal neuropathy by intraneural ganglion cysts and synovial cysts. Compression of the peroneal nerve by extraneural ganglion cysts is rare. We report a rare case of compressive common peroneal neuropathy by an extraneural ganglion cyst.
CASE SUMMARY: A 46-year-old man was hospitalized after he reported a right foot drop for 1 mo. Manual muscle testing revealed scores of 1/5

RATIONALE: Peroneal neuropathy is the most common type of peripheral neuropathy in the lower extremities. The peroneal nerve is usually compressed at the lateral aspect of the fibular head. Compression by ganglion cysts are one of the numerous underlying etiologies for peroneal nerve neuropathy and are most frequently located around the fibular neck and proximal tibiofibular joint. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an extraneural ganglion cyst located at the level of the distal thigh that resulted in compressive peroneal neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Schwannoma is a benign tumor that arises from the peripheral nerve sheath. It presents as a discrete, often tender, and palpable nodule associated with neurogenic pain or paresthesia when compressed or traumatized. The growth rate is usually slow, and these lesions seldom exceed 2 cm in diameter.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a schwannoma arising from the tibial nerve located in the left popliteal fossa. The patient presented with the left foot pain in the lateral plantar region without any motor deficit. The pre-operative diagnosis was made with magnetic resonance imaging

Neurological injuries following peripheral nerve blocks are a relatively rare yet potentially devastating complication depending on the type of lesion, affected extremity, and duration of symptoms. Medical management continues to be the treatment modality of choice with multimodal nonopioid analgesics as the cornerstone of this therapy. We report the case of a 28-year-old man who developed a clinical common peroneal and lateral sural cutaneous neuropathy following an uncomplicated popliteal sciatic nerve block. Workup with electrodiagnostic studies and magnetic resonance neurography revealed i

There are many causes for the paralysis of the external sciatic popliteal nerve , such as the intraneural ganglion cyst. In this case, we evaluate a 52-year-old woman with no relevant personal record, who was admitted with paresis of the right foot of 4 months of evolution associated with alterations in the sensitivity that rose up to the posterolateral region of the leg. The diagnosis was based on MR and cyst decompression and disconnection of the articular branch. Given the low incidence of these lesions, their origin is still subject to controversy. The most widely accepted theory is the un

INTRODUCTION: The proximity of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus to the popliteal artery determines a risk of vascular injury in its suture. The aim of this study is to determine the location of the popliteal artery, and to establish the minimal distance from the posterior wall of the lateral meniscus to the artery, the common peroneal nerve (CPN), and its correlation to other variables.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 102 magnetic resonance studies were retrospectively reviewed from patients undergoing surgery at our institution. The axial section where the lateral meniscus could b

Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is an immune complex-mediated reaction that may complicate the course of multibacillary leprosy. Bullous lesions in Type II reaction, though reported, are exceedingly rare. We report the case of a 32 year old female patient who presented initially at our OPD with erythema nodosum. Cutaneous examination revealed impaired sensation over dorsum of right foot and thickened right lateral popliteal nerve. Slit skin smear (SSS) from ear lobes revealed AFB with a bacteriological index of 2+. She was started on MDT, tablet ofloxacin 200 mg twice a day, and 30 mg oral pre

Peroneal nerve entrapment is most commonly seen in the popliteal fossa. It is rarely caused by a ganglion. Intraneural ganglia, although uncommon and seldom cause serious complications, are well recognized and most commonly affect the common peroneal (lateral popliteal) nerve. Ganglionic cysts developing in the sheath of a peripheral nerve or joint capsule may cause compression neuropathy. The differential diagnosis should involve L5 root lesions, posttraumatic intraneural hemorrhage, nerve compression near the tendinous arch located at the fibular insertion of the peroneal longus muscle and n
