A rare case of parasagittal meningioma causing isolated foot drop: case report and review of the literature.

Foot drop represents a very common reason for a neurologist referral and is often first seen in emergency departments or by a general practitioner. This condition is defined as weakness of ankle dorsiflexion (mainly through tibialis anterior muscle weakness). The most common causes include lower motor neuron lesion, with L4-L5 radiculopathy and peroneal neuropathy being the most frequent ones. Classical diagnostic pathway includes a thorough medical history, detailed neurological examination, radiological studies (MRI of the lumbosacral spine), EMG and nerve conduction studies, and a battery o

Atypical musculoskeletal manifestations on flexor hallucis longus tendon of gout causing tarsal tunnel syndrome in diabetic patients: A case report.

RATIONALE: Deposition of tophus is a common feature in chronic gout; however, signs and symptoms are not always well-pronounced in cases of uncommon sites. We report a rare case with a tophaceous tendonitis on the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon with tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). This is the first surgical case of TTS by gouty tophi in FHL. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of mild discomfort at the right foot, which gradually worsened in the past 3 weeks. The patient visited our outpatient clinic due to persistent and aggravating foot pain and swellin

A Case of Posterior Tibial Nerve Injury After Arthroscopic Calcaneoplasty.

We report the first case of distal posterior tibial nerve injury after arthroscopic calcaneoplasty. A 59-year-old male had undergone right arthroscopic calcaneoplasty to treat retrocalcaneal bursitis secondary to a Haglund's deformity. The patient complained of numbness in his right foot immediately after the procedure. Two years later and after numerous assessments and investigations, a lateral plantar nerve and medial calcaneal nerve lesion was diagnosed. In the operating room, the presence of an iatrogenic lesion to the distal right lateral plantar nerve (neuroma incontinuity involving 20%

Association of sericin and swimming on the phenotype, motor plate, and functionality of the denervated plantar muscle of Wistar rats.

Physical exercise may help maintain muscle properties and functional improvement after peripheral nerve lesion, which may be enhanced by using biocompatible substances, such as sericin. The aim of this study was analyse the effect of sericin associated with swimming exercise on the phenotype, innervation, and functionality of the plantar muscle of Wistar rats. Forty randomly divided adult rats were used in five groups of eight animals: control, injury, sericin, exercise, exercise and sericin. The application of sericin was done on the spot, 100 μL, shortly after nerve compression. Three days a

Constitutively reduced sensory capacity promotes better recovery after spinal cord-injury (SCI) in blind rats of the dystrophic RCS strain.

BACKGROUND: We compared functional, electrophysiological and morphological parameters after SCI in two groups of rats Sprague Dawley (SD) rats with normal vision and blind rats from a SD-substrain "Royal College of Surgeons" (SD/RCS) who lose their photoreceptor cells after birth due to a genetic defect in the retinal pigment epithelium. For these animals skin-, intramuscular-, and tendon receptors are major available means to resolve spatial information. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to check whether increased sensitivity in SD/RCS rats would promote an improved recovery after SCI

Lipofibromatous Hamartoma of the Plantar Nerve An Extremely Rare Localization.

Lipofibromatous hamartoma (LFH) is a rare, benign, tumor-like soft-tissue lesion that affects the peripheral nerves and forms a palpable neurogenic mass. Lipofibromatous hamartoma is associated with pain and sensory and/or motor deficits in the area of innervation of the affected nerve. This report describes a rare case of LFH of the plantar nerve. A 48-year-old woman presented to our outpatient orthopedic clinic with pain and a burning sensation on her left foot. The patient had a history of Morton's neuroma and had undergone a tarsal tunnel operation 2 years earlier at another center. None o

Alteration of nociceptive integration in the spinal cord of a rat model of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a major non motor symptom that contributes to impaired quality of life in PD. However, its mechanism is unknown. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: We sought to identify the pain phenotypes and parallel changes in spinal integration of peripheral stimuli in a rat model of PD induced by lesions of SN dopamine neurons, using behavioral plantar and von Frey tests as well as electrophysiology of the dorsal horn. RESULTS: We show that dopamine depletion by 6-OHDA induced hypersensitivity to mechanical and thermal stimuli. These abnormal behaviors were paralleled by increased neuronal res

Nerve Entrapment in Ankle and Foot: Ultrasound Imaging.

Peripheral nerve entrapment of the ankle and foot is relatively uncommon and often underdiagnosed because electrophysiologic studies may not contribute to the diagnosis. Anatomy of the peripheral nerves is variable and complex, and along with a comprehensive physical examination, a thorough understanding of the applied anatomy is essential. Several studies have helped identify specific areas in which nerves are commonly compressed. Identified secondary causes of nerve compression include previous trauma, osteophytes, ganglion cysts, edema, accessory muscles, tenosynovitis, vascular lesions, an

Tarsal tunnel syndrome caused by an uncommon ossicle of the talus: A case report.

RATIONALE: Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is a compressive neuropathy of the posterior tibial nerve or one of its branches within the tarsal tunnel that is often caused by a variety of space-occupying lesions, such as ganglia, lipomas, varicosities, neural tumors, trauma, or systemic disease. The os sustentaculi is a small accessory bone, bridged to the posterior aspect of the sustentaculum tali by fibrocartilage. To the best of our knowledge, this is a rare case of successful treatment of TTS caused by the os sustantaculi. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 37-year-old male presented with insidious onset of

Modified Methacrylate Hydrogels Improve Tissue Repair after Spinal Cord Injury.

Methacrylate hydrogels have been extensively used as bridging scaffolds in experimental spinal cord injury (SCI) research. As synthetic materials, they can be modified, which leads to improved bridging of the lesion. Fibronectin, a glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix produced by reactive astrocytes after SCI, is known to promote cell adhesion. We implanted 3 methacrylate hydrogels: a scaffold based on hydroxypropylmethacrylamid (HPMA), 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and a HEMA hydrogel with an attached fibronectin (HEMA-Fn) in an experimental model of acute SCI in rats. The animals und

[Lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy with a small intramedullary lesion in posterior spinal cord: a case report].

We present the unique case of a patient with lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy (LRPN) and a small intramedullary lesion, probably an infarction, in the spinal cord. A previously healthy 58-year-old female developed acute severe pain involving the entire right lower limb, followed by weakness of the right lower limb a few hours later. The patient could not walk and was referred to our clinic. The patient reported no sphincter symptoms. Examination of the cranial nerves and upper limbs revealed no abnormalities. The strength in her right lower limb was reduced to Medical Research Council gra

A rare case of autoimmune limbic encephalitis: an uncharted territory!

Autoimmune encephalitis is rare. Several auto- antibodies are described in autoimmune encephalitis. We describe a case of autoimmune limbic encephalitis associated with positive voltage gated potassium channel (VGKC) antibodies and positive leucine-rich glioma inactivated protein 1 antibodies (LGI1). A 33-year-old Saudi housewife, she presented with 2 months history of cognitive deterioration and recurrent left facio-brachial dystonic seizures followed by generalized tonic clonic seizures. At times the seizures are preceded by rising epigastric aura and shortness of breath. The neurological ex

Anatomical Study of the Neurovascular in Flexor Hallucis Longus Tendon Transfers.

The transfer of the flexor hallucis longus tendon or flexor digitorum longus tendon is frequently used for the treatment of posterior tibial tendon insufficiency or chronic Achilles tendinopathy. According to several anatomical studies, harvesting the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon may cause nerve injury. Sixty-eight embalmed feet were dissected and anatomically classified to define the relationship between Henry's knot and the plantar nerves. Two different configurations were identified. In Pattern 1, which was observed in 64 specimens (94.1%), the distance between the medial plantar ner

Isolated medial plantar neuropathy caused by a large ganglion cyst diagnosed with MRI: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Although ganglion cysts are common soft tissue tumors, nerve compression syndrome caused by a ganglion cyst in the lower extremities is very rare. Herein, we report a 57-year-old man who presented with hypoesthesia in the sole of his right foot for 6 months. We believe that reporting this rare case will help clinicians update their knowledge on possible causes of the plantar neuropathy, and avoid diagnostic delay. PRESENTATION OF CASE: The patient had pain and numbness in the inner right sole, as well as a tingling and dull sensation. Tenderness around the area of abnormal sensa

Sclerosing alcohol injections for the management of intermetatarsal neuromas: A systematic review.

An intermetatarsal neuroma is a plantar digital neuritis causing metatarsalgia of the affected inter-metatarsal space. At present the evidence to support the management of the condition is poor with only some quality evidence supporting the short-term management of intermetatarsal neuromas using steroid injections. Some authors have supported the use of alcohol sclerosing intra-lesional injections to treat intermetatarsal neuromas. Following a search of the evidence 11 articles were identified. The systematic review found that alcohol injections appear to be safe although some papers report a

RNAi mechanisms in Huntington's disease therapy: siRNA versus shRNA.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial susceptibility is well characterized in monomicrobial infections, but bacterial species often coexist with other bacterial species. Antimicrobial susceptibility is often tested against single bacterial isolates; this approach ignores interactions between cohabiting bacteria that could impact susceptibility. Here, we use Pooled Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing to compare antimicrobial susceptibility patterns exhibited by polymicrobial and monomicrobial urine specimens obtained from patients with urinary tract infection symptoms. METHODS: Urine samples were collecte
