Association of air-conducted sound oVEMP findings with cVEMP and caloric test findings in patients with unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders.

CONCLUSION: This study showed that the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) in response to air-conducted sound (ACS) reflects functions of different parts of the vestibular labyrinth from cervical VEMP (cVEMP). OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the origin of the vestibular end organs of the oVEMP in response to ACS (500 Hz tone bursts) is the same as that of cVEMP. METHODS: Twenty patients definitively diagnosed with unilateral Meniere's disease (MD), 6 patients with unilateral vestibular neuritis (VN), and 7 healthy subjects were enrolled. In these subjects, the oVEMP and cVEMP

[Pseudo abducens palsy].

In this study, we present two cases of different eye movement disorders with variable case histories but with the same end stage; abduction paresis of one of the eyes, which ceased when the other eye was covered. Our differential diagnosis is that either the ocular form of myasthenia gravis, convergence spasm or ocular myotonia could explain the symptoms. However, we hypothesize that the clinical picture corresponds to pseudo abducens palsy or focal dystonia of the extraocular muscle, which in turn could be the result of impaired inhibition of the tonic resting activity of the antagonistic med

Surgical treatment for congenital absence of the oval window with facial nerve anomalies.

Three patients with a middle ear malformation characterized by the absence of the oval window and complicated by facial nerve anomalies were treated by surgery. Hearing ability of all the patients was improved. A variety of facial nerve anomalies were observed. Fenestration of the vestibule above the facial nerve was performed in the case of 2 of the 3 patients. In the other patient, fenestration of the scala vestibuli below the facial nerve was performed. In the case of all the 3 patients, hearing ability improved after the surgery and remained stable for a long time. Surgery for this disease

[Is myopia a risk factor for glaucoma?].

Controversy exists in the literature concerning the role of axial myopia as a risk factor for primary open-angle glaucoma. Epidemiologic evidence suggests that moderate and especially high myopia with a refractive error exceeding -6D is a risk factor for the development and the progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, with a twofold to threefold increased risk of glaucoma compared with that of nonmyopic subjects. This risk has been proven to be independent of other glaucoma risk factors and intraocular pressure (IOP). Myopic eyes have slightly although probably not clinically relevant, hi

Immunohistological labeling of microtubules in sensory neuron dendrites, tracheae, and muscles in the Drosophila larva body wall.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc disease has a disabling impact on global people with heavy burden on society, mainly consisting of lumbar disc degeneration (LDD) and lumbar disc herniation (LDH). The recently released lumbar disc nomenclature version 2.0 deepens our understandings on the diseases. Consequently, there is an urgent need to clarify the occurrence and distribution features of LDD and LDH in a large-scale sample in terms of the novel version. QUESTION/PURPOSES: We asked: (1) Is there a difference in the occurrence and distribution hallmarks of LDD and LDH in a population-based large-scale

Regression of early diabetic macular oedema is associated with prevention of dark adaptation.

HYPOTHESIS: Dark-adapted rods consume oxygen at high rates and light adaptation decreases this oxygen burden and can have therapeutic effects on diabetic macular oedema (DMO). METHODS: Patients with mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (DR) and early, untreated non-sight-threatening DMO slept for 6 months wearing masks that illuminated the eyelid of one closed eye by 505 nm light. Exclusion criteria were any concomitant eye disease, DR >ETDRS grade 35, and other systemic diseases. PRIMARY OUTCOME: change of OCT retinal thickness in the local region where oedema was present. RESULTS:

Heart rate variability in children with acute rheumatic fever.

OBJECTIVE: Acute rheumatic fever is a systemic inflammatory disease occurring after acute streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis. The PR prolongation in these patients is thought to be due to increased vagal activity. There has been no previous study investigating the autonomic balance in patients with acute rheumatic fever. In this study, we aimed to investigate the balance of the autonomic nervous system in children with acute rheumatic fever by analysis of heart rate variability. METHODS: We evaluated the heart rate variability parameters in 50 patients with acute rheumatic fever and 37 compara

Simian varicella virus gene expression during acute and latent infection of rhesus macaques.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a neurotropic α-herpesvirus that causes chickenpox during primary infection and establishes latency in sensory ganglia. Reactivation of VZV results in herpes zoster and other neurological complications. Our understanding of the VZV transcriptome during acute and latent infection in immune competent individuals remains incomplete. Infection of rhesus macaques with the homologous simian varicella virus (SVV) recapitulates the hallmarks of VZV infection. We therefore characterized the SVV transcriptome by quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase PCR during acut

CNS recruitment of CD8+ T lymphocytes specific for a peripheral virus infection triggers neuropathogenesis during polymicrobial challenge.

Although viruses have been implicated in central nervous system (CNS) diseases of unknown etiology, including multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the reproducible identification of viral triggers in such diseases has been largely unsuccessful. Here, we explore the hypothesis that viruses need not replicate in the tissue in which they cause disease; specifically, that a peripheral infection might trigger CNS pathology. To test this idea, we utilized a transgenic mouse model in which we found that immune cells responding to a peripheral infection are recruited to the CNS, where

Autonomic nervous dysfunction in hamsters infected with West Nile virus.

Clinical studies and case reports clearly document that West Nile virus (WNV) can cause respiratory and gastrointestinal (GI) complications. Other functions controlled by the autonomic nervous system may also be directly affected by WNV, such as bladder and cardiac functions. To investigate how WNV can cause autonomic dysfunctions, we focused on the cardiac and GI dysfunctions of rodents infected with WNV. Infected hamsters had distension of the stomach and intestines at day 9 after viral challenge. GI motility was detected by a dye retention assay; phenol red dye was retained more in the stom

The L-coding region of the DA strain of Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus causes dysfunction and death of myelin-synthesizing cells.

The DA strain and other members of the TO subgroup of Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) induce an early transient subclinical neuronal disease followed by a chronic progressive inflammatory demyelination, with persistence of the virus in the central nervous system (CNS) for the life of the mouse. Although TMEV-induced demyelinating disease (TMEV-IDD) is thought to be immune mediated, there is also evidence that supports a role for the virus in directly inducing demyelination. In order to clarify the function of DA virus genes, we generated a transgenic mouse that had tamoxifen-in

CT evaluation of vocal cord paralysis due to thoracic diseases: a 10-year retrospective study.

PURPOSE: To discuss computed tomography (CT) evaluation of the etiology of vocal cord paralysis (VCP) due to thoracic diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From records from the past 10 years at our hospital, we retrospectively reviewed 115 cases of VCP that were evaluated with CT. Of these 115 cases, 36 patients (23 M, 13 F) had VCP due to a condition within the thoracic cavity. From these cases, we collected the following information: sex, age distribution, side of paralysis, symptom onset date, date of diagnosis, imaging, and primary disease. The etiology of VCP was determined using both histor

Involvement of caspase-6 and caspase-8 in neuronal apoptosis and the regenerative failure of injured retinal ganglion cells.

To promote functional recovery after CNS injuries, it is crucial to develop strategies that enhance both neuronal survival and regeneration. Here, we report that caspase-6 is upregulated in injured retinal ganglion cells and that its inhibition promotes both survival and regeneration in these adult CNS neurons. Treatment of rat retinal whole mounts with Z-VEID-FMK, a selective inhibitor of caspase-6, enhanced ganglion cell survival. Moreover, retinal explants treated with this drug extended neurites on myelin. We also show that caspase-6 inhibition resulted in improved ganglion cell survival a

Phrenic motoneuron expression of serotonergic and glutamatergic receptors following upper cervical spinal cord injury.

Following cervical spinal cord injury at C(2) (SH hemisection model) there is progressive recovery of phrenic activity. Neuroplasticity in the postsynaptic expression of neurotransmitter receptors may contribute to functional recovery. Phrenic motoneurons express multiple serotonergic (5-HTR) and glutamatergic (GluR) receptors, but the timing and possible role of these different neurotransmitter receptor subtypes in the neuroplasticity following SH are not clear. The current study was designed to test the hypothesis that there is an increased expression of serotonergic and glutamatergic neurot

Sequential imaging analysis using MIBG scintigraphy revealed progressive degeneration of cardiac sympathetic nerve in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) cardiac scintigraphy was used to differentiate Parkinson's disease (PD) with Lewy body pathology from other degenerative parkinsonisms. MIBG cardiac scintigraphy demonstrates the extent of degeneration of myocardial post-ganglionic sympathetic nerves in patients with PD. Because of its specificity for Lewy body (LB) pathology, MIBG scan might also be useful biomarker for the neurodegeneration attributed to PD. To estimate the utility of the imaging technique as a biomarker, we conducted sequential imaging analysis and power analysis. METHODS: Sixty-t

Role of Purinergic Signaling in Voiding Dysfunction.

Purinergic signaling is a term that relates to adenosine triphosphate binding to its receptor (purinergic receptors such as P2X and P2Y subtypes). This pathway has been implicated in bladder functional disorders related to interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome, neurogenic bladder secondary to spinal cord injury, lower urinary tract symptoms, diabetes, and aging. Purinergic signaling occurs at multiple sites, including the central nervous system, peripheral motor and sensory nerves, detrusor smooth muscle, and bladder urothelium. Future pharmacologic agents to treat bladder functional

Arsenicosis: review of recent advances.

Human health in the past and presently is influenced by the amounts and proportion of chemical elements to which humans have been exposed. Arsenic, as a therapeutic agent was known to ancient Greeks and Romans. Ehrlick introduced organic arsenicals as anti linetic agents but with advent of penicillin these have nearly become obsolete. Once considered toxic, harmful to humans, arsenic is now considered an essential ultra trace element at least in animals. Now the impact of arsenic on health is more from industrial and environmental than medicinal exposure. This article reviews human exposure to
