Prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in primary care - A study on Swedish children and young people.

Musculoskeletal pain is a common complaint among children and young people, and primary care services are typically the first contact when seeking medical care. The main objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in primary care among children and young people in the Skåne Region, Sweden. The annual prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in primary care was investigated and stratified by sex, age, and pain sites among individuals aged 8-18 years, registered as living in Skåne from 2016 to 2024 (mean annual population n=176 618). To investigate this, the Skåne

Association between cardiometabolic diseases and the risk and progression of motor neuron diseases in Sweden: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The evidence on the link between cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) and motor neuron diseases (MNDs) remains inconsistent. We aimed to determine whether there is an association of CMDs, namely, any cardiovascular disease, cardiac arrhythmia, heart failure, thromboembolic disease, hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, and hypercholesterolemia with the risk and progression of MNDs. METHODS: We included 1463 MND patients (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), progressive spinal muscular atrophy (PSMA), an

Role of the FDG PET CT Scan in Pretreatment Evaluation of Oral Carcinomas.

UNLABELLED: Gastric cancer (GC) is a prevalent malignancy worldwide with high morbidity and mortality. Its insidious onset and lack of sensitive early biomarkers impede routine screening, so most patients present advanced or metastatic disease at first diagnosis, leading to poor prognosis and scarce curative options. Surgery, chemotherapy and targeted therapy serve as standard GC treatments, however their efficacy is restricted by metastasis, adverse reactions and drug resistance, which drives the rapid development of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based immunotherapy. Although monoclonal a

Neurological and neuropsychiatric complications of COVID-19 in 153 patients: a UK-wide surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: Concerns regarding potential neurological complications of COVID-19 are being increasingly reported, primarily in small series. Larger studies have been limited by both geography and specialty. Comprehensive characterisation of clinical syndromes is crucial to allow rational selection and evaluation of potential therapies. The aim of this study was to investigate the breadth of complications of COVID-19 across the UK that affected the brain. METHODS: During the exponential phase of the pandemic, we developed an online network of secure rapid-response case report notification porta

Paraneoplastic Lambert-Eaton syndrome in a patient with disseminated metastatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Neurological paraneoplastic syndromes are rare, occur in 0.01% of all cancer patients; like part of them, the Lambert-Eaton syndrome is an autoimmune presynaptic disorder of neuromuscular transmission characterized by muscle weakness and neurovegetative dysfunction, and often associated with small cell lung cancer. CASE REPORT: A 72 years old female with a family history of lung cancer and leukemia, with 7 months of dry cough and 3 months with waist and pelvic muscle weakness, oropharyngeal dysphagia, dry mouth, chronic constipation and weight loss of 10 kg. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:

Association Between Subjective Tinnitus and Cervical Spine or Temporomandibular Disorders: A Systematic Review.

Movements of the neck and jaw may modulate the loudness and pitch of tinnitus. The aim of the present study was to systematically analyze the strength of associations between subjective tinnitus, cervical spine disorders (CSD), and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A systematic literature search of the Medline, Embase, and Pedro databases was carried out on articles published up to September 2017. This covered studies in which tinnitus and CSD or TMD were studied as a primary or a secondary outcome and in which outcomes were compared with a control group. Included articles were evaluated on n

Topical analgesics for acute and chronic pain in adults - an overview of Cochrane Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Topical analgesic drugs are used for a variety of painful conditions. Some are acute, typically strains or sprains, tendinopathy, or muscle aches. Others are chronic, typically osteoarthritis of hand or knee, or neuropathic pain. OBJECTIVES: To provide an overview of the analgesic efficacy and associated adverse events of topical analgesics (primarily nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), salicylate rubefacients, capsaicin, and lidocaine) applied to intact skin for the treatment of acute and chronic pain in adults. METHODS: We identified systematic reviews in acute and c

Financial conflicts of interest and their association with outcome and quality of fibromyalgia drug therapy randomized controlled trials.

AIMS: To evaluate the association of financial conflicts of interest (FCOI) with the characteristics, outcome and reported methodological quality of fibromyalgia drug therapy randomized controlled trials (FM-RCTs). METHODS: A cross-sectional study of original, parallel-group, drug therapy FM-RCTs published between 1997 and 2011 from Medline and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was conducted. Two reviewers independently assessed each RCT for funding source, authors' FCOI(s), study characteristics, reporting of methodological measures important for internal validity and outcome (p

Safety and efficacy of abobotulinumtoxinA for hemiparesis in adults with upper limb spasticity after stroke or traumatic brain injury: a double-blind randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Resistance from antagonistic muscle groups might be a crucial factor reducing function in chronic hemiparesis. The resistance due to spastic co-contraction might be reduced by botulinum toxin injections. We assessed the effects of abobotulinumtoxinA injection in the upper limb muscles on muscle tone, spasticity, active movement, and function. METHODS: In this randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind study, we enrolled adults (aged 18-80 years) at least 6 months after stroke or brain trauma from 34 neurology or rehabilitation clinics in Europe and the USA. Eligible participants

Primary carnitine deficiency: adult onset lipid storage myopathy with a mild clinical course.

We studied two adult patients with myalgia and muscular fatigability during prolonged physical exercise. Serum creatine kinase was increased and muscle biopsy revealed a lipid storage myopathy affecting predominantly the type I fibres. Skeletal muscle carnitine content was reduced to 15% and 21% of the normal mean values, while serum carnitine levels were either normal or decreased. Four months of oral therapy with L-carnitine (3 g per day) resolved the clinical symptoms completely in both patients, and a subsequent muscle biopsy confirmed a marked reduction of lipid storage, along with increa

Muscle biopsy findings in primary fibromyalgia and other forms of nonarticular rheumatism.

Virtually all the reports on muscle biopsy in chronic muscle pain conditions, except those of primary fibromyalgia syndrome (PFS) published recently, have inadequate methodologic information, particularly on definition of cases, and lack controlled materials, so that no firm conclusions may be made. A limited number of controlled studies of muscle biopsy in PFS suggest that results are negative by usual light microscopic, histochemical, and electron microscope examinations. The findings of abnormal rubber band-like structures and interconnecting network of reticular or elastic fibers in muscle
