Fialuridine is an antiviral agent with potent activity against hepatitis B virus replication in vitro and in vivo. In a phase II study, 7 of 15 patients experienced severe toxicity due to the drug after 9 to 13 weeks of treatment. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of cyclosporin A (CyA) with and without methotrexate (MTX) in refractory juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and juvenile dermatomyositis (JDMS).
METHODS: Twenty-two patients (17 with JRA, 5 with JDMS) with refractory disease were studied retrospectively. All received CyA at a mean dose of 3.2 mg/kg/day over a mean period of 16 mo (range 6-42). All other medications except nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, prednisone, and hydroxychloroquine were discontinued. In addition, 16/22 patients received concomitant MTX.

Germanium-containing dietary supplements became popular in the 1970s in Japan and later in other countries, as elixirs for certain diseases (e.g., cancer and AIDS). We report a rare case of spontaneously developing generalised gas gangrene with massive rhabdomyolysis after a cholecystectomy and drainage of a hepatic abscess. We report on the clinical course of 15 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) who were treated with recombinant beta-interferon as part of a phase I-II study. There were no objective responders among the 15 patients treated with recombinant beta-interferon at an i.v. dose escalating from 90 X 10(6) U given three times a week until there was documented disease progression or complete response (CR). BACKGROUND: Lovastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug that can cause myopathy as a rare side effect. Concomitant use of certain drugs (e.g., cyclosporine) increases the risk of skeletal muscle toxicity. Lovastatin is metabolized by CYP3A4. Rhabomyolysis with myoglobinuria has been added relatively recently to the neurologic complications associated with the increased use of cocaine and the introduction of its alkaloid form (crack). This retrospective study reports our experience with 14 patients who presented with rhabdomyolysis after cocaine use in a municipal hospital over a 3-year period.
