Sixty-three heterosexual men were successfully treated with a single injection of spectinomycin hydrochloride 2 g for urethral infections with Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Chlamydia trachomatis was recovered from the urethra of 11 of these men both before and after treatment. In six men, the organism was isolated after but not before treatment. No isolates were obtained from the remaining men either before or after treatment. All 17 of the men who yielded C. trachomatis developed post-gonococcal urethritis. We examined the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in the cervix and the fallopian tubes of patients with acute salpingitis. Cycloheximide-treated McCoy cells were used as the growth medium. Acute salpingitis is one of the most common acute gynecologic diseases and occurs in approximately 750,000 women each year in the United States. Use of laparoscopy to confirm the diagnosis of acute salpingitis has shown that the signs and symptoms classically ascribed to this disease are not specific to it. Five mature rams and 4 bulls were inoculated parenterally with bovine or ovine chlamydial strains of type 1 and 2. One to 3 days later, all animals developed a chlamydemia lasting 4 to 8 days. An indirect immunoferritin (IIF) technique is described for recognizing the elementary bodies (EB) of Chlamydia trachomatis in unsectioned preparations. Both the EB of a genital strain of C. trachomatis grown in irradiated McCoy cells and EB in clinical specimens obtained from patients attending a venereal disease clinic were identified by the IIF test in the electron microscope.
