BCAP31-related syndrome: The first de novo report.

Pathogenic variants in the BCAP31 gene have recently been associated with a severe congenital neurological phenotype, named DDCH after its key features: deafness, dystonia and central hypomyelination. BCAP31 is located at the Xq28 chromosomal region and only male individuals are currently known to be affected, the pathogenic variant being usually transmitted by healthy mothers. Here, we describe a three-year-old male child referred for severe developmental delay, failure to thrive, hearing loss and dyskinetic movements. After a conventional diagnostic workflow, including a normal array-CGH, a

Diagnosis of Bilirubin Encephalopathy in Preterm Infants with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Very preterm infants are susceptible to bilirubin neurotoxicity, the signs of which are unclear during early infancy. We investigated children born preterm and later diagnosed with bilirubin encephalopathy (BE) to gain insights into accurate early diagnosis. METHODS: We identified 93 children born preterm and clinically diagnosed with BE who visited our hospital between 2006 and 2018. Perinatal history, findings of auditory brainstem response (ABR), brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and functional outcomes were investigated retrospectively based on chart review. RESULTS:

Use of the Dyskinesia Impairment Scale in non-ambulatory dyskinetic cerebral palsy.

AIM: To assess the responsiveness, concurrent validity, and feasibility of the Dyskinesia Impairment Scale (DIS) in non-ambulatory patients with dyskinetic cerebral palsy (CP). METHOD: The study is a secondary analysis of data collected in the IDYS trial, a randomized controlled trial on the effects of intrathecal baclofen (ITB). The DIS and Barry-Albright Dystonia Scale (BADS) were conducted at baseline and after 3 months of ITB or placebo treatment. Responsiveness was assessed by comparing the effect sizes and correlation of change after treatment between the DIS and BADS. Concurrent validi

Development of a Data Logger for Capturing Human-Machine Interaction in Wheelchair Head-Foot Steering Sensor System in Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy.

The use of data logging systems for capturing wheelchair and user behavior has increased rapidly over the past few years. Wheelchairs ensure more independent mobility and better quality of life for people with motor disabilities. Especially, for people with complex movement disorders, such as dyskinetic cerebral palsy (DCP) who lack the ability to walk or to handle objects, wheelchairs offer a means of integration into daily life. The mobility of DCP patients is based on a head-foot wheelchair steering system. In this work, a data logging system is proposed to capture data from human-wheelchai

TSEN54 Gene-Related Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia Type 2 Could Mimic Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy with Severe Psychomotor Retardation.

Pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH) type 2 is a very rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder with prenatal onset that disrupts brain development. We present three patients (two siblings and one unrelated child) with PCH 2 linked to the most common mutation c.919G > T (p.Ala307Ser) in TSEN54 gene. The disease started soon after birth with feeding difficulties, extrapyramidal symptoms, psychomotor retardation, progressive microcephaly. Two of the patients were diagnosed with dyskinetic cerebral palsy (CP) at first. Despite the neurodegenerative character of PCH 2, the absence of regress

A case of new PCDH12 gene variants presented as dyskinetic cerebral palsy with epilepsy.

Here we report a Japanese patient with new compound heterozygous truncating variants in the PCDH12 gene. As compared to the previously reported families who had congenital microcephaly, intrauterine growth retardation, intracranial calcification, and neonatal seizure associated with dysplasia of the midbrain-hypothalamus-optic tract, the present patient showed no midbrain-hypothalamus dysplasia or congenital/postnatal microcephaly, but dyskinetic cerebral palsy and severe intellectual disability as well as multifocal epilepsy. To understand phenotypic spectrum associated with PCDH12 variants,

Clinical characteristics and functional status of children with different subtypes of dyskinetic cerebral palsy.

Dyskinetic cerebral palsy (CP) is the second major subtype of CP. Dyskinetic CP can be classified into different subtypes, but the exact clinical characteristics of these subtypes have been poorly studied. To investigate the clinical characteristics and functional classification of dyskinetic CP from the perspective of neurologic subtypes in a hospital-based follow-up study. This was an observational study of consecutive children with dyskinetic CP treated at The Affiliated Women & Children Hospital of Qingdao University (China) from October 2005 to February 2015. The children were stratified a

A Model to Estimate the Optimal Layout for Assistive Communication Touchscreen Devices in Children With Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy.

Excess involuntary movements and slowness of movement in children with dyskinetic cerebral palsy often result in the inability to properly interact with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices. This significantly limits communication. It is, therefore, essential to know how to adjust the device layout in order to maximize each child's rate of communication. The aim of this paper was to develop a mathematical model to estimate the information rate in children with dyskinetic cerebral palsy and to determine the optimal AAC layout for a touchscreen tablet that results in enhanced

Functional Connectivity Alterations in Children with Spastic and Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) has long been investigated to be associated with a range of motor and cognitive dysfunction. As the two most common CP subtypes, spastic cerebral palsy (SCP) and dyskinetic cerebral palsy (DCP) may share common and distinct elements in their pathophysiology. However, the common and distinct dysfunctional characteristics between SCP and DCP on the brain network level are less known. This study aims to detect the alteration of brain functional connectivity in children with SCP and DCP based on resting-state functional MRI (fMRI). Resting-state networks (RSNs) were established
