[Magnetic resonance imaging findings in children with cerebral palsy].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical and neurological abnormalities in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to attempt to correlate the types of CP and the gestational age at birth with radiological abnormalities detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. METHODS: This is a hospital-based study, the subjects included 104 children with cerebral palsy who were hospitalized in the Qingdao Rehibilitation Center For Disabled Children. All the 104 hospitalized CP cases (47 with spastic diplegia, 9 with tetraplegia, 15 with hemiplegia, 22 with athetosis, and 11 with ataxia) were examine

CT and MR patterns of hypoxic ischemic brain damage following perinatal asphyxia.

The objectives were to study the clinical and neurological abnormalities in children with cerebral palsy and to attempt to correlate the signs with radiological abnormalities detected by CT scan and/or MRI of the brain. In a prospective, hospital-based study, 65 children with cerebral palsy were examined neurologically and their perinatal history was reviewed. Their cranial CT scan, and/or magnetic resonance images were studied. The association between the gestational ages, perinatal history, neurological deficits, and the radiological appearances were studied. Of the 24 preterm-born and 41 te

A gene for ataxic cerebral palsy maps to chromosome 9p12-q12.

Cerebral palsy (CP) has an incidence of approximately 1 in 750 births, although this varies between ethnic groups. Genetic forms of the disease account for about 2% of cases in most countries, but contribute a larger proportion in certain sub-types of the condition and in populations with a large proportion of consanguineous marriages. Ataxic cerebral palsy accounts for 5-10% of all forms of CP and it is estimated that approximately 50% of ataxic cerebral palsy is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. We have identified a complex consanguineous Asian pedigree with four children in two sib

Cerebellar ataxia in childhood: a review of clinical features, investigative findings and aetiology in 30 cases.

The symptoms, neurological deficits and aetiology of cerebellar ataxia were reviewed in 30 children aged from 4 to 16 years, who had been extensively investigated. Fourteen (46.6%) children had perinatal problems, and in 6 (20%), ataxia resulted from these perinatal events. Besides unsteady gait, a common presenting complaint was delayed motor milestones, noted in 15 (50%) patients. In most children (76.6%), clinical examination indicated involvement of more than one of the three main cerebellar divisions, viz archicerebellum, paleocerebellum and neocerebellum. Hypotonia, found in 11 (36.6%) c

[Ataxic cerebral palsy and brain imaging].

Five cases diagnosed as having ataxic cerebral palsy were presented with their brain imaging. Case 1, a 3-year-old-girl had been floppy since 7 months of age and began ataxic walk with spastic legs from 18 months of age. MRI revealed generalized atrophy of cerebellum (especially in anterior superior part) and slight atrophy of pons. Her mother also had ataxia with spastic legs of early onset. She and her mother were thought to have an early-onset inherited non-progressive cerebellar ataxia syndrome. Case 2, a 8-year-old-girl had ataxic walk since 17 months of age. MRI revealed cerebellar atrop

Maternal reproductive histories in ataxic cerebral palsy.

Maternal reproductive histories of fetal wastage in 36 cases of ataxic cerebral palsy and in a control group of 60 mothers were compared. There was no significant difference between the groups. A history of fetal loss did not accompany this cerebral palsy syndrome where prenatal factors play an important role.

Minor congenital anomalies and ataxic cerebral palsy.

The incidence of minor congenital anomalies was examined in 36 patients with ataxic cerebral palsy, in unaffected family members, and in 100 unrelated control subjects. None of the control subjects or family members had more than four anomalies, and 25 of 36 (69%) of the patients had more than four. The distribution of anomalies differed considerably, with 60% of the index cases having seven or more, and 94% of the controls having three or less. The number occurring in the patients was significantly more than in their relatives. Of the 25 patients with more than four anomalies, 16 (64%) had un

Ataxic cerebral palsy--clinico-radiologic correlations.

Clinico-radiologic correlations, using CT, were studied in 29 patients with ataxic cerebral palsy. The scans were normal or only slightly abnormal in 38%, posterior fossa abnormalities occurred in 28%, and 55% had obvious cerebral abnormalities which always involved the parietal lobes. There were only two cases where the changes were confined to the posterior fossa. Hydrocephalus was present in four, and there was one case of a Dandy-Walker malformation. An absolute association with any clinical subtype was unusual. All cases of simple ataxia had an obviously abnormal scan, but the changes wer

Ataxic cerebral palsy and genetic predisposition.

It was calculated that in the 962 family members of 36 patients with ataxic cerebral palsy there were 75 (8%) with a history of neurodevelopmental disorder and 31 (3%) with a major congenital malformation. This was not significantly greater than expected, and does not support the hypothesis of a genetic non-Mendelian role in the aetiology of ataxic cerebral palsy.

Outcome in infants of birth weight 500 to 999 g: a continuing regional study of 5-year-old survivors.

During 1979 and 1980, 351 infants of birth weight 500 to 999 g were born in the State of Victoria: 89 (25.4%) survived to the age of 2 years corrected for prematurity, and 83 were fully assessed by a multidisciplinary team; partial data were obtained on the remainder. At the age of 5 years, corrected for prematurity, 85/89 (96%) were evaluated by a multidisciplinary team, although not all children could be fully evaluated by the psychologists. Reports were available for another three children; one child was untraced. Of the survivors able to be classified at 5 years, 59/82 (72%) had no functio

Pathogenetic and preventive aspects of non-progressive ataxic syndromes.

The article reviews the collected knowledge concerning the non-progressive syndromes of ataxic cerebral palsy. Three syndromes are described: (1) simple ataxia (signs of dyssynergia); (2) ataxic diplegia (ataxia with added diplegic spasticity); and (3) dysequilibrium syndrome (defective postural control and equilibrium). The probable aetiological factors in each syndrome are discussed. In simple ataxia prenatal factors dominate; a high proportion of cases have an untraceable aetiology. Genetic factors play a large rôle, and birthweight is usually normal. With ataxic diplegia the aetiology is a
