INTRODUCTION: Oxidised regenerated cellulose is a commonly used haemostatic agent in surgery which, in rare cases, has been held responsible for severe complications.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 6-year-old girl developed flaccid paraplegia following the excision of a large thoracic ganglioneuroblastoma. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed spinal cord compression at the T10-11 level and the patient underwent emergency decompression via the previous thoracotomy. At operation the causative factor was found to be a mass consisted of cellulose used at the original procedure to control local bleeding i

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma. Currently 200 million people worldwide are infected. Neurological manifestations are a result of the inflammatory response of the host to egg deposition in the brain and spinal cord and is usually seen in patients with recent infection with no evidence of systemic illness. Cerebral and cerebellar disease can result in headache, seizure, and increased intracranial pressure. Cerebral schistosomiasis is more common in Schistosoma japonicum, but increasing cases due to Schistosoma mansoni are being reported in

A 46-year-old male presented with progressive paraparesis and sensory impairment in both lower limbs since 2 months. He had urinary and bowel incontinence. On examination he had flaccid paraplegia with a sensory level at 11(th) dorsal vertebral level. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the lumbosacral spine showed an enhancing intramedullary lesion in the conus. The patient underwent excision of the conus mass. Histopathology confirmed the tumor to represent a poorly differentiated metastatic carcinoma from an unknown primary. A positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT)

Intramedullary spinal cord abscess in children is rare and holocord abscess is rarer. An 18-month-old girl presented with rapidly progressive paraplegia with fever for 2 months. The patient had complete flaccid paraplegia with absent sensation below D4 level. There was very small dermal sinus discharging pus in the lower lumbar region. Magnetic resonance imaging showed evidence of extensive multiloculated intramedullary abscess extending from D4 to L5 with cord edema upto cervical level. Laminotomy, excision of the dermal sinus and myelotomy, and evacuation of intramedullary abscess was perfor

We herein report the case of a 26-year-old woman with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis presenting with ophthalmoplegia and flaccid paraplegia. She developed disorientation and hallucination after fever and vomiting. Hypothermia, hypoventilation, hypertension, paralytic ileus and hyponatremia were present. Neurological examination showed mild consciousness disturbance and bilateral ophthalmoplegia on admission, flaccid paraplegia with leg areflexia on Day 4. Anti-NMDAR antibodies were detected in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples. Motor nerve conduction velocity w

Acute aortic dissection is a life-threatening event in which prompt and correct diagnosis is associated with better outcomes. In most cases, there is chest or back pain. However, in rare cases, patients have little or no pain and other symptoms are more conspicuous at presentation. The autors reports the case of a 47-year-old female patient who sought medical attention for sudden-onset paraplegia. The physical examination was normal except for bilateral lower limb flaccid paralysis, with abolition of deep tendon reflexes and paraesthesia in both feet. Computed tomography showed aortic dissecti

A 61-year-old patient was affected by flaccid paraplegia for 20 years because of post-traumatic medullar injury caused by an accidental fall, with stage IV sacral pressure ulcer for 3 years. The patient later developed stage IV sacral pressure ulcer. After 6 months, a new granulation tissue formation appeared in the wound and a reduction of its diameter was observed (length 20 cm, width 15 cm, depth 5 cm). We therefore treated the wound with PRP (platelet rich plasma) intra-lesion and peri-lesional injections. The wounds were covered with three-dimensional polymerised hyaluronic acid medicated

A 45-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with flaccid paraplegia. Neurological examination at a local hospital, 2 months before admission to our hospital, showed sensory impairment of the right posterior surface of the thigh and a decreased Achilles tendon reflex. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a T₂ weighted high-intensity area at the Th10-11 level that was more pronounced in the gray matter. The patient developed flaccid paraparesis and urinary retention. No improvement was observed after 2 rounds of methylprednisolone (mPSL) pulse therapy. Spinal cord biopsy showed demy

An obstetric patient who had no significant risk factors developed a spinal epidural haematoma remote from the site of needle puncture (for administration of spinal anaesthesia). The clinical deficits were manifest after recovery from the motor blockade had started a phenomenon that we have termed as a 'spinal lucid interval'. The patient developed flaccid paraplegia with a sharp sensory level and urinary retention. The patient underwent emergency laminectomy and evacuation of the haematoma. She gradually recovered near normal power and was ambulant independently and had normal sphincter funct

Acute spinal epidural abscesses rarely complicate bacterial meningitis in adults. We report an uncommon case of advanced pneumococcal meningitis complicated by acute lumbar epidural abscess in an adult. A 35-year-old man was admitted to the medical intensive care unit with pneumococcal meningitis. On the eighth day of hospitalization, he presented a cauda equine syndrome with flaccid paraplegia, saddle anesthesia, and bladder and bowel dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine demonstrated a suppurative collection at L2-L3. Surgical decompression was performed, and antibiother

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic autoimmune disease with which a variety of neuropathic disorders have been associated. Among these, the acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome has been well established. However, acute axonal lumbosacral polyradiculoneuropathy accompanied by albuminocytological dissociation in the cerebrospinal fluid has been extremely rarely reported in SLE. We report on a 47-year-old woman with discoid lupus presenting with acute onset of flaccid paraplegia. Extensive investigations suggested the diagnos

Tick paralysis is a rare entity in which it is necessary to identify the cause and remove the arthropod to have a rapid remission of symptoms. In the absence of an early diagnosis, the outcome can be fatal, as toxins are released from the tick's saliva as it feeds. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first clinical report of the disease in Mexico and Latin America. A 22-year-old man from a rural area, who was in contact with cattle, developed ascending flaccid paralysis secondary to Amblyomma maculatum tick toxin. He presented flaccid paraplegia and arreflexia that progressed un

We report the case of Conn's adenoma in a 36-year-old woman, revealed by low extremities weakness. The patient had hypertension at 170/90 mmHg. Her initial potassium level was low i.e., 1.5 mmol/L. The diagnosis, confirmed by hormonal investigation, showed an elevation of plasma aldosterone and lower plasma renin activity. Abdominal MRI revealed a lesion in left adrenal gland, measuring 1.8 cm in diameter and taking contrast in periphery, compatible with an adrenal adenoma. The patient underwent a left laparoscopic adrenalectomy and microscopic examination confirmed the diagnosis. The postoper

A 6-yr-old, captive-born male lion (Panthera leo) with a 3-day history of acute and nonprogressive spastic paraplegia of the hind limbs and flaccid paraplegia of the left forelimb, was submitted for postmortem examination. Before and after the onset of the neurologic signs, neither hematologic nor other significant clinical abnormalities were observed. The only remarkable gross lesion was restricted to the C6-C7 segments of the spinal cord, where a focal and asymmetric enlargement of the cord displaced the nerve roots. On the cut surface, a poorly demarcated dark red hemorrhagic lesion involve

Spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is a rare condition that can be fatal if untreated. Risk factors are immunocompromised states as well as spinal procedures including epidural anesthesia and spinal surgery. The signs and symptoms of SEA are nonspecific and can range from low back pain to sepsis. The treatment of choice is surgical decompression followed by four to six weeks of antibiotic therapy. The most common causative organism in SEA is staphylococcus aureus and spread is usually haematogenous or contiguous from psoas, paraspinal or retropharyngeal abscesses. The exact mechanism by which an ep

We report the first autopsied case of paraneoplastic necrotizing myelopathy associated with esophageal cancer in the literature. The patient had acute flaccid paraplegia and urinary retention, and had a good recovery of strength of both legs in response to corticosteroids. MRI showed a characteristic lesion with post-gadolinium enhancement of the cervical to mid-thoracic spinal cord at the onset, which has never been reported. Taken together, these results suggest that there is an underlying autoimmune mechanism in paraneoplastic necrotizing myelopathy.

We describe a newly diagnosed HIV-infected child, without prior history of AIDS-defining disease, who presented with Burkitt lymphoma-related cauda equina syndrome that rapidly progressed to a flaccid paraplegia. Diagnosis was confirmed on biopsy and magnetic resonance imaging of the spine showed multiple epidural masses with involvement of several vertebral bodies, cord edema and compression of the cord and cauda equina. The child's immune status was relatively preserved and Epstein-Barr serology proved negative. Chemotherapy (LMB 89 modified protocol) was initiated immediately after histopat

We present the first reported case of Aspergillus vertebral osteomyelitis and epidural abscess in Singapore in a 50-year-old man with post-tuberculous bronchiectasis. The patient presented with acute urinary retention and flaccid paraplegia. Despite surgical debridement and treatment with voriconazole, the patient developed multiorgan failure and died two weeks after presentation. Early diagnosis and prompt initiation of treatment are emphasised in the hope of improving the outcome of this aggressive condition.
