[Severe and prognostically unfavourable forms of tick-borne encephalitis (early-summer meningo-encephalitis) in Freiburg (author's transl)].

Eight patients with proven tick-borne encephalitis (early-summer meningo-encephalitis; central European encephalitis) were treated in 1979. The disease ran a severe course in four: one died after six weeks of coma and pneumonia with right-heart failure. Another patient is in coma for more than 40 weeks. A third patient had severe flaccid tetraplegia more than 10 weeks after initial coma. The fourth patient still had leg paresis after nine weeks, her left arm also being largely paralysed. This high incidence of severe forms of the disease differs from other published reports.

[A case of spontaneous hematomyelia (author's transl)].

A case of spontaneous hematomyelia was reported with a review of the literature. A 39-year-old woman, with sudden onset of pain in her left neck and arm 13 days previously, presented with a progressive flaccid tetraplegia below C5, dissociated sensory loss from C7 through Th4 dermatome and a minimal deep sensory loss in her right leg. Myelography revealed a symmetrical enlargement of the spinal cord at the leve of C5, C6 and C7. Laminectomy was performed and intramedullary blood clot, which was located in the region of C6 and C7, was evacuated. However, there were no vascular anomalies not onl

[Polyneuropathy due to "allergic vasculitis" possibly related to australia antigen. (author's transl)].

The authors describe a case of flaccid tetraplegia due to a polyneuropathy in a man aged 50 years, progressing rapidly to death from mesenteric infarction. As significant abnormalities, the hematologic examinations revealed a very high erythrocyte sedimentation rate, a marked leukocytosis and a positive Australia antigen in repeated controls. In spite of the clinical picture being that of a symmetrical polyneuropathy rather than that of mononeuritis multiplex, the diagnose of a collagenosis was suspected. Nevertheless steroid treatment was not given because the patient had a peptic ulcer. On h

Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis in an African-case report.

The case history of a typical case of hypokalaemic periodic paralysis is described. A 21-year-old male Ugandan African presented with his second attack of complete flaccid tetraplegia. Serum potassium levels, ECG changes ,nd response to therapy were entirely consistent with the diagnosis. Family history was negative. It is possible that this rare disorder has not previously been reported in an African. Possible mechanisms involved in the disorder are briefly discussed.
