An Investigation of Changes in Hemispheric Functional Connectivity after Stroke Based on fNIRS.

Stroke is a severe cerebrovascular disease. The understanding of the process of post-stroke brain recovery is crucial for prescribing rehabilitation plan. The resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) has been used to analyze the brain functional networks with the aim to understand the post-stroke neuroplasticity. In this investigation, the rsFC data has been collected from 7 stroke patients and 7 healthy control subjects using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore the possible changes in hemispheric functional connectivity (FC) in stroke patients in comparison with the h

Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome after endovascular reperfusion therapy for medium vessel occlusion: A case report.

Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome is a rare but serious complication after revascularization procedures for cerebrovascular diseases. Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome can develop after treatment of acute ischemic stroke, including intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular treatment of large vessel occlusion. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no previous reports describing cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome after endovascular treatment of medium vessel occlusion (eg, anterior cerebral artery A2/3 segment). We report a case of cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome after endovascular reper

Does higher knee hyperextension in patients with hemiplegia affect lateral and medial meniscus volume in the paretic leg? A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: After stroke, an abnormal gait pattern gradually leads to knee pain and joint lesions, resulting the gait instability. However, the correlation between the knee hyperextension and gait pattern, the meniscus volume, and the water content of meniscus in paretic and non-paretic legs has not been fully investigated. Moreover, most of physicians tend to ignore this knee hyperextension. This study attempted to emphasize the importance of knee hyperextension using gait analysis and Magnetic resonance imaging (Trial registration number ChiCTR2000039641, date of registration 04/11/2020). Robotized Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis-Assisted Gait Training on Genu Recurvatum during Gait in Patients with Chronic Stroke: A Feasibility Study and Case Report.

Genu recurvatum (knee hyperextension) is a common problem after stroke. It is important to promote the coordination between knee and ankle movements during gait; however, no study has investigated how multi-joint assistance affects genu recurvatum. We are developing a gait training technique that uses robotized knee-ankle-foot orthosis (KAFO) to assists the knee and ankle joints simultaneously. This report aimed to investigate the safety of robotized KAFO-assisted gait training (Experiment 1) and a clinical trial to treat genu recurvatum in a patient with stroke (Experiment 2). Six healthy par

Increased hip adductor activation during sit-to-stand improves muscle activation timing and rising-up mechanics in individuals with hemiparesis.

Long sit-to-stand (STS) time has been identified as a feature of impaired functional mobility. The changes in biomechanics of STS performance with simultaneous hip adductor contraction have not been studied, which may limit indications for use of hip adductor activation during STS training. Ten individuals with hemiplegia (mean age 61.8 years, injury time 29.8 ± 15.2 months) performed the STS with and without squeezing a ball between two legs. The joint moments, ground reaction force (GRF), chair reaction force and movement durations and temporal index of electromyography were calculated from

Can the Shriners Hospital Upper Extremity Evaluation (SHUEE) Detect Change in Dynamic Position and Spontaneous Function of the Upper Limb in People With Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy?

BACKGROUND: The Shriners Hospital Upper Extremity Evaluation (SHUEE) is a video-based measure designed to assess upper extremity function in people with cerebral palsy (CP). The SHUEE completes both dynamic positional analysis (DPA; position during functional activities) and spontaneous functional analysis (spontaneous use of the involved limb). Although the SHUEE has been suggested as a measure for planning upper limb interventions and evaluating outcomes, limited evidence of its ability to detect change exists. Thus, this study aimed to describe responsiveness of the SHUEE to detect change a

Multifocal glioblastoma and hormone replacement therapy in a transgender female.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma multiforme represents approximately 60% of all brain tumors in adults. This malignancy shows a high level of biological and genetic heterogeneity associated with exceptional aggressiveness, leading to poor patient survival. One of the less common presentations is the appearance of primary multifocal lesions, which are linked with a worse prognosis. Among the multiple triggering factors in glioma progression, the administration of sex steroids and their analogs has been studied, but their role remains unclear to date. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 43-year-old transgender woman w
