As rehabilitation for post-stroke hemiplegic patients has become widely accepted practice, there has been an increase in patients who are more difficult to treat. In the prescription rationale of orthoses for hemiplegics, the knee-ankle-foot orthosis (KAFO) for the lower limb has generally been underestimated because of its inhibitory effect on the normal walking pattern and also its interference with gait training. Sudden hearing loss is common, but unexplained in many cases. Although usually attributed to a viral infection of the inner ear in most patients, the abrupt onset of the hearing loss in many patients argues against a viral etiology. We describe one patient with acquired dysgraphia who showed spelling errors (mainly deletions and substitutions), both for words and non-words, across all output modalities (oral and written spelling, and delayed copying). Spelling accuracy was not affected by lexical factors, but was a function of word length. The patient's performance in oral and written tasks suggests the hypothesis of selective damage to the Graphemic Buffer.

The prevalence of hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP) and associated factors was studied in patients with a stroke followed for 6 months after discharge from hospital. A questionnaire was used to evaluate shoulder symptoms and an examination of the shoulder and arm was carried out three times over 6 months. In this paper different models of anosognosia are confronted and data concerning denial behaviors are presented that were collected on a selected population of right brain-damaged patients affected by motor and neglect disorders. Anosognosia for motor impairment and anosognosia for cognitive impairments were found to be dissociated, as well as anosognosia for the upper and lower limb motor impairments. These findings are then discussed in an attempt to choose the more suitable theoretical framework for interpreting the various disorders related to denial of illness.

Ischaemic cerebral strokes in children are relatively uncommon. With the exception of patients with moyamoya disease, there is no effective treatment for these lesions. One potential approach is encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis (EDAS). This is a safe neurosurgical procedure that promotes spontaneous transdural anastomosis that may provide additional blood flow to ischaemic regions.
