BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coenurosis is an important cause of neurological disease in sheep in endemic regions. Ante-mortem diagnosis is primarily based on clinical signs, which are often nonspecific. Computed tomography (CT) can detect intracranial cystic lesions. This study aimed to describe CT imaging features of Coenurus cerebralis in sheep and to evaluate their association with neurological clinical findings.
METHODS: Twenty 7-month-old Afshari male lambs with neurological signs consistent with coenurosis and 20 healthy matched controls were included. Affected animals underwent neurological e

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic infection and a recognized neglected disease primarily caused by species within the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) complex. Its cerebral clinical presentation is uncommon and usually manifests as a solitary hydatid cyst. We report an atypical case of cystic echinococcosis with multiple cerebral cysts in a 16-year-old boy from Córdoba Province, Argentina. Microscopic examination of the cyst contents revealed the presence of protoscolices characteristic of Echinococcus spp., confirming the parasitic nature of the lesions. PCR and DNA seque

Toxoplasmosis remains a major global health concern, particularly in immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women, while currently available therapies are associated with significant toxicity and limited efficacy against chronic infection. Drug repurposing represents an attractive strategy for the identification of safer and more effective anti-Toxoplasma gondii agents. This study investigated the antiparasitic potential of loratadine, a second-generation antihistamine, using an integrated in silico, in vitro, and in vivo approach. The anti-T. gondii activity of loratadine was evaluated th

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii can cause severe damage to immunodeficient hosts, and also compromise brain structure and function in immunocompetent hosts during latent infection. In China, the two different isolates, Chinese I (ToxoDB#9) and Chinese III are dominant epidemic strains widely spreading in humans and domestic animals and can lead to latent infection in host brain tissues, but the comparison of their manipulation patterns and mechanisms remains unclear.
METHODS: Tachyzoites of the TgWh6 (Wh6) strain and the TgCtLHG (LHG) strain were used for establishing in vitro infection models

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Brain abscess (BA) is a pyogenic infection of the brain parenchyma caused by various organisms. Multiple BAs are uncommon in neonates, and Candida albicans as a causative agent is very rare. If left untreated, BAs are invariably fatal. Early diagnosis, prompt surgical intervention, simultaneous eradication of the primary source, and high-dose intravenous antibiotics decrease the incidence of morbidity and mortality.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-day-old newborn, delivered normally at term with a full APGAR score, presented with a 5-day history of fever, decreased activi

BACKGROUND: Despite recent advances for treating cerebral toxoplasmosis (CT), monitoring the parasite burden and treatment response is still challenging. miRNAs are small non-coding RNAs with regulatory functions that can be used in diagnosis and treatment monitoring. We investigated the changes in miR-146a, BAG-1 gene, IL-6, and IL-10 tissue levels in the brain of BALB/c mice with chronic CT caused by the PRU strain of T. gondii following anti-parasitic and antibiotic treatment.
METHOD: Fifty-three 6-to 8-week-old BALB/c mice were infected using intraperitoneal inoculation of cerebral cysts

Toxoplasma gondii is known to have a complex life cycle and infect almost all kinds of warm-blooded animals around the world. The brain of the host could be persistently infected by cerebral cysts, and a variety of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and suicide have been reported to be related with latent toxoplasmosis. The infected animals showed fear reduction and a tendency to be preyed upon. However, the mechanism of this "parasites manipulation" effects have not been elucidated. Here, we reviewed the recent infection prevalence of toxoplasmosis and the evidence of mental and beha

Labrune syndrome is an extremely rare disorder characterized by a radiological triad of leukoencephalopathy, cerebral calcifications, and cysts. The condition is the result of an autosomal mutation in the SNORD118 gene, a non-protein encoding gene that mediates rRNA synthesis. The mutation results selectively in cerebral microangiopathy through an unknown mechanism. Radiological imaging is central to diagnosing the condition, but, because the condition is so rare, there is no standard treatment paradigm. We describe the longitudinal progression of a case of Labrune syndrome, including the radi

Redox disbalance in placental cells leads to the hyperproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), it mediates the dysregulation of the maternal immune tolerance to a semi-allogenic fetus, inducing pro-inflammatory reactions, and it plays a central role in perinatal complications and neonatal disease programming. Microvesicles, which provide transplacental communication between a mother and fetus, contain microRNAs (miRNAs) that are sensitive to oxidative stress (OS) mediators and can control the balance of ROS production and utilization in target cells. In the context of this paradigm, we eva

Toxoplasmosis, caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is a major public concern owing to its neurotropic nature and high morbidity and mortality rates in immunocompromised patients and newborns. Current treatment for this disease is inefficient and produces side effects. Inflammatory mediators produced during T. gondii infection (e.g., cytokines and nitric oxide) are crucial in controlling parasite replication. In this context, Tityus serrulatus venom (TsV) induces the production of inflammatory mediators by immune cells. Thus, this study aimed to isolate and identify the components of TsV with potentia

Taenia solium cysticercosis and taeniasis (TSCT), caused by the tapeworm T. solium, is a foodborne and zoonotic disease classified since 2010 by WHO as a neglected tropical isease. It causes considerable impact on health and economy and is one of the leading causes of acquired epilepsy in most endemic countries of Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia. There is some evidence that the prevalence of TSCT in high-income countries has recently increased, mainly due to immigration from endemic areas. In regions endemic for TSCT, human cysticercosis can manifest clinically as neurocysticercosi

Leukoencephalopathy with brain calcifications and cysts (LCC) is a rare cerebral microangiopathy, the cause of which was recently determined to be recessively inherited mutations in the SNORD118 gene. We report the case of a 32-year-old Irish Traveller woman who presented to the emergency department in convulsive status epilepticus with abnormal neuroimaging features characteristic of LCC. Her medical history consisted of epilepsy, intellectual impairment, previous craniotomies for excision of cerebral cysts and resection of a tibial osteogenic sarcoma. Mitochondrial complex I is encoded by 38 nuclear-encoded and 7 mitochondrial-encoded genes. FOXRED1 is one of the 13 additional nuclear genes known as assembly factors. So far, four patients have been described with complex I deficiency caused by autosomal recessive mutations in FOXRED1. Here, we report the fifth patient with FOXRED1 related complex 1 deficiency presenting with prenatal onset of bilateral periventricular cysts, congenital lactic acidosis, and persistent life-limiting pulmonary hypertension. Naturally occurring neurologic disease in non-human primates may be attributable to a wide-range of causes, including infectious agents, congenital or acquired malformations, degenerative diseases, and, rarely, neoplasia. We report a case of ataxia and paresis in a juvenile rhesus macaque with ependymal-lined cerebral cysts.

Small rodents serve as intermediate or paratenic hosts for a variety of parasites and may participate in the transmission of these parasites into synanthropic cycles. Parasites with neuroinvasive stages, such as Toxoplasma gondii or Toxocara canis, can cause detrimental damage in the brain of intermediate or paratenic hosts. Therefore, the occurrence of neuroinvasive parasite stages was evaluated in brains of wild rodents captured in the city of Leipzig, Germany. In addition, a few specimens from the cities of Hanover, Germany, and Vienna, Austria were included, resulting in a total of 716 rod
