Genetic diversity of West Nile virus lineage 2a circulating in Culex pipiens vector populations from Bucharest city during the 2024 and 2025 transmission seasons.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging pathogen in Europe with an unprecedented northward expansion. In Romania, the virus has been endemic for at least three decades, and human infection cases are registered yearly, sometimes culminating in outbreak events. Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, is the largest urban area of the country, encompasses a multitude of mosquito and bird habitats, and has been continuously reported as an active hotspot for WNV transmission. The circulation of lineage 2 has been documented in Bucharest since 2010 in mosquito and human populations. Our stud

Clinical and genetic spectrum of pediatric mitochondrial disorders in China: insights from a 47-case genetically confirmed cohort.

BACKGROUND: Primary mitochondrial disorders (MDs) are genetically and clinically heterogeneous metabolic diseases caused by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) or nuclear DNA (nDNA) mutations. Pediatric MDs pose diagnostic challenges due to variable onset, multisystem involvement, and complex genotype–phenotype correlations. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 69 children with suspected MDs at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center (2015–2025). Genetic diagnoses were established through targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) combined with clinical, biochemical, and neuroimaging evaluation. Forty-seven p

Multi-omics predicts radiotherapy response in small cell lung cancer patients receiving whole brain irradiation.

OBJECTIVE: Dosiomics and radiomics elaborate the low-and high-order features extracted from images to predict clinical outcomes. Whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) has been widely used in patients with diffuse brain metastases of small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The objective of this study is to ascertain the predictors of treatment response in patients with SCLC treated with WBRT. Furthermore, the study seeks to develop accurate machine learning models to predict the radiotherapy response of WBRT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study retrospectively enrolled BM patients who received whole brain irra

A CACNA2D2-Related Recessive Form of Cerebellar Abiotrophy in Angus Cattle.

Cerebellar disease in ruminants is often virus-induced and non-genetic, but there are also rare inherited forms of cerebellar hypoplasia and cerebellar abiotrophy (CA). So far, no causal variant has been reported for these conditions in cattle. Two inbred Angus calves suspected of having cerebellar disease were reported in Scotland. The aims of this study were to characterize the clinicopathological phenotype of Angus calves affected by a cerebellar disease, to identify a causal variant assuming autosomal monogenic recessive inheritance and to evaluate its prevalence in Angus populations. Clin

Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia associated with a NEK1 missense variant: exploring a possible phenotypic association.

NEK1 variants are recognized genetic contributors to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and have occasionally been reported within the ALS-frontotemporal dementia (FTD) spectrum. However, their association with isolated behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) remains unclear. Here, we describe a 69-year-old man who developed progressive behavioral symptoms beginning in his early 60s. Cognitive evaluation demonstrated reduced verbal fluency with relative preservation of memory functions. Structural and functional neuroimaging demonstrated right-predominant frontotemporal atrophy and

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Without Papilledema in a Transgender Woman With HIV: A Case Report and Review of Risk Factors.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a disorder characterized by elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) in the absence of intracranial mass lesions, hydrocephalus, or infection. The condition most commonly presents with headache and papilledema; however, idiopathic intracranial hypertension without papilledema (IIHWOP) is increasingly recognized as a clinically important variant that may lead to diagnostic delay and progressive visual impairment. Established risk factors include obesity, female sex, and hormonal influences, while IIH in people living with HIV remains uncommon. We report

Contemporary use of ultrasound for diagnosis and surveillance of carotid stenosis.

Carotid duplex ultrasound emerged in the 1970s, and in the subsequent decade it leapt rapidly from the bench to the bedside. While duplex velocity criteria were initially validated against carotid angiograms with good fidelity, the methods of measurement employed by pivotal carotid trials in the 1990s necessitated a revalidation of existing classification schemes. Today, there is significant variation in the criteria used by vascular laboratories, with early efforts towards standardization correlating poorly with other imaging modalities. The new Intersocietal Accreditation Commission modified

First detection of West Nile virus in Belgium through wild bird surveillance, Belgium, 2025.

In August 2025, West Nile virus (WNV) was detected for the first time in Belgium through a monitoring programme in wild birds, with three corvids testing positive by RT-qPCR. In September and October, four additional infected birds were identified. Whole genome sequencing classified the strain as WNV lineage 2, consistent with strains circulating elsewhere in Europe. These detections provide evidence of local WNV circulation with important implications for animal and public health preparedness and surveillance during the 2026 mosquito season.

Intracranial ependymoma and secondary hydrocephalus: a rare case report in a Camel (Camelus bactrianus).

Intracranial ependymomas are rare neuroepithelial tumors that arise from the ependymal lining of the ventricular system. Although sporadically reported in domestic species, primary brain tumors remain exceptionally rare in Old and New World camelids. This report describes the clinico-pathological characteristics of an intracranial ependymoma associated with secondary hydrocephalus in an adult female camel (Camelus bactrianus). The animal presented with progressive neurological signs, including a unilateral circling gait and ataxia. Computed tomography (CT) revealed asymmetric enlargement of th

Beyond Imaging: A 12-Year Clinicopathological Analysis of Surgically Excised Neurocysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC), caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium, is the most prevalent parasitic infection of the central nervous system (CNS) and a leading cause of acquired epilepsy in endemic regions. Although neuroimaging has substantially improved the diagnosis of NCC, radiological appearances may vary according to the stage of the parasite and often overlap with neoplastic, inflammatory, and other infectious lesions. Consequently, histopathological examination remains the definitive diagnostic modality in surgically excised cases. METHODS: This retrospective clinicopat

Improvements in dementia classification for brain SPECT volumes using vision transformer and the Brodmann areas.

PURPOSE: This study proposes a vision transformer (ViT)-based model for dementia classification, able to classify representative dementia with Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, and healthy controls using brain single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images. The proposed method allows for an input based on the anatomical structure of the brain and the efficient use of five different SPECT images. METHODS: The proposed model comprises a linear projection of input patches, eight transformer encoder layers, and a multilayered perceptron for classi

Emergency department visits for concussion in children and youth by age, sex and material deprivation in Ontario, Canada, 2010-2020: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Concussion has been a topic of concern in Ontario, Canada, and elsewhere, and new research and guidelines are emerging. The association between material deprivation and emergency department (ED) visits for concussions is not well established, and many studies have focused on organised sports which may not be equally accessible. The objective of this study was to examine the association between material deprivation, age, sex and ED visits for concussions in children and youth (0-19). METHODS: This study used administrative data from ICES in Ontario, Canada. All ED visits for c

Speech-language therapy and occupational therapy for patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia: a retrospective cohort study using German health claims data.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a complex, multifactorial syndrome characterised by cognitive decline and impaired daily functioning, representing a major risk factor for long-term care dependency. As the prevalence of dementia will increase due to demographic change, healthcare systems face growing challenges, including timely diagnosis, equitable access to care, and managing the rising demand for health services. Speech-language therapy (SLT) and occupational therapy (OT) can help maintain cognitive function and quality of life, particularly in the early stages of dementia or mild cognitive impairme
