A retrospective series reviewing 28 cases of optic glioma in childhood is reported from the Columbus Children's Hospital. The literature is reviewed from a clinical and pathological standpoint; in the pathological literature there is support for consideration of these lesions as a neoplastic entity, but none for designation of these gliomas as "hamartomas." An approach to the management of optic gliomas is presented. Treatment should be tailored to the individual patient; no clear therapeutic protocol appears to be supported by available data.

The broad spectrum of cystic intracranial lesions of congenital, infectious, traumatic, vascular and neoplastic origin are discussed. Their CT findings, pathology and pathogenesis are emphasized.

Lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 28 non-neoplastic hydrocephalic children was studied for total protein and electrophoretic protein patterns. These were classified as normal, degenerative, transudative and gamma-globulinic according to Laterre. We found higher total CSF protein mean values than in normal cases with the same age and abnormal electrophoretic patterns in 72% of the cases, of which degenerative was the most common (54%). Fifteen patients with cancer involving the temporal bone have been considered for radical surgical treatment by partial resection of the temporal bone during the past 12 years. All but one had undergone previous treatment by local surgery and/or irradiation. Two patients proved to be inoperable at surgical exploration. Twenty-six cases of non-neoplastic stenosis of the aqueduct are reviewed. This condition may take a very chronic course and may not be revealed until decompensation of hydrocephalus takes place. Poor athletic record in the school or intellectual impairment in early life, commonly overlooked, can presage the more obvious symptoms. A prolonged follow-up of these cases is essential to exclude a slowly growing neoplasm near the aqueduct. Our management and the outcome of these cases is discussed.

Angiograpic diagnosis of non-neoplastic aqueductal stenosis in 4 children were described. The materials were selected from 160 vertebral angiograms of children below 15 years, performed at the Kyushu University Hospital from July 1967 to March 1974. A choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) removed from a child with communicating hydrocephalus was studied with the electron microscope. Congenital miline dorsal malformations in infants most commonly represent spina bifida cystica or teratoma. The five patients reported here are a distinct clinicopathologic entity. In this paper we report a child who had extensive neoplastic infiltration of the meninges which defied clinical detection. We believe that any patient with a past or present history of tumor who presents with increased intracranial pressure should be presumed to have intracranial neoplastic involvement, even in the face of negative diagnostic studies. As in this case, other causes of increased intracranial pressure should be systematically excluded.

A survey of the literature pertaining to several serial brain scanning procedures has been presented. These procedures include rapid brain imaging, sequential brain imaging, delayed from imaging, and follow-up brain imaging.
