BACKGROUND: Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacteria transmitted to human by animal stools, contaminated water and food. In children, Listeria monocytogenes typically affects newborns and immunocompromised patients often leading to invasive syndromes including sepsis, brain abscesses, meningitis, meningoencephalitis and rhombencephalitis. In healthy and immunocompetent children, Listeria meningitis is rare, but can progress rapidly and may be associated with severe complications (hydrocephalus, ventriculitis, cranial nerves palsy and cerebrospinal abscesses) and high mortality rate.

BACKGROUND: Listeria monocytogenes is an opportunistic pathogen of the central nervous system commonly associated with impaired cell-mediated immunity. We hereby present a case of adult neurolisteriosis where the only immunological feature persistently present was serum IgM deficiency, suggesting that non-specific humoral immunity may also play a central role in the control of neuroinvasion by Listeria monocytogenes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old male who had never experienced severe infections presented with headache, nuchal rigidity and confusion. Neuroimaging was normal and lumbar punct

Listeria monocytogenes is thought to colonize the brain using one of three mechanisms: direct invasion of the blood-brain barrier, transportation across the barrier by infected monocytes, and axonal migration to the brain stem. The first two pathways seem to occur following unrestricted bacterial growth in the blood and thus have been linked to immunocompromise. In contrast, cell-to-cell spread within nerves is thought to be mediated by a particular subset of neurotropic L. monocytogenes strains. In this study, we used a mouse model of foodborne transmission to evaluate the neurotropism of sev

Background:L. monocytogenes meningoencephalitis has a mortality rate of up to 50% and neurofunctional sequelae are common. Type I restriction-modification systems (RMS) are capable of adding methyl groups to the host genome. Some contain multiple sequence recognition (hsdS) genes that recombine, resulting in distinct DNA methylation patterns and patterns of gene expression. These phenotypic switches have been linked to virulence and have recently been discovered in multiple clonal complexes of L. monocytogenes. In the present study, we investigated the significant of RMS on L. monocytogenes vi

In 2018, a case of neural disease suspected of listeriosis was reported in a flock of sheep in Kosovo with the death of ewes and 5 lambs. Samples from the brain of only three dead animals were subjected to histopathological and bacteriological analysis. MALDI-TOF MS was applied to confirm suspected Listeria spp. isolates from culture and multiplex PCR was applied for molecular serotyping. All isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by microdilution broth method. The histopathological analysis of the brain specimens showed typical changes for Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria spp.

During a 6-mo period, two 5-6 mo old female chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) were examined at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus after the discovery of firm, nonmobile masses in the left ventral cervical and left axillary region. Other than these findings and mild weight loss, both chinchillas' physical exams were normal. Bloodwork revealed an inflammatory leukogram characterized by leukocytosis, toxic neutrophils, lymphopenia, and monocytosis with mild, nonregenerative anemia. At necropsy, both masses were identified as abscesses. Streptococcus equi, subspecies zooepidemicus

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis meningoencephalitis is a zoonotic disease that mostly infects slaughterhouse workers. Rapid diagnosis of Streptococcus suis meningoencephalitis is critical for effective clinical management of this condition. However, the current diagnostic techniques are not effective for early diagnosis of this condition. To the best of our knowledge, the use of cerebrospinal fluid metagenomic next generation sequencing in the diagnosis of Streptococcus suis meningoencephalitis has been rarely reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a case of Streptococcus suis meningoenc

Leptospirosis is a common febrile illness in Malaysia. The disease is caused by pathogenic bacteria called leptospires that are transmitted directly or indirectly from animals to humans via contaminated water or soil. It is a potentially serious but treatable disease. Its symptoms may mimic those of other unrelated febrile illnesses such as dengue, influenza, meningitis, hepatitis or viral haemorrhagic fevers. The spectrum of the disease is extremely wide, ranging from subclinical infection to a severe syndrome of multiorgan infection with high mortality. The diagnosis requires high suspicion

A 57-year-old Australian woman, with a history of hazardous alcohol consumption, presented with a seizure following 2 days of fever and headache. Initial imaging suggested the presence of an isolated brain abscess, however, a thorough physical examination, identified no additional septic focus. Five sets of blood cultures were sterile and serology for Burkholderia pseudomallei was negative. Other investigations including computed tomography of her chest, abdomen and pelvis and a trans-esophageal echocardiogram were normal. Despite the administration of intravenous vancomycin, ceftriaxone, and

The Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has been shown to provide considerable protection against miliary or meningeal tuberculosis (TB), but whether it prevents other forms of disease remains controversial. Recent evidence has shown that the BCG vaccine also provides protection against latent TB infection (LTBI). The aim of the current study was to examine whether BCG has a protective role against LTBI among children in close contact with an adult index case in a low TB endemicity setting with the use of the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube test (QFT-GIT). A cross-sectional study was conducted o

We report a case of tuberculosis (TB) meningitis after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for relapsed acute myeloid leukemia. The patient was 52-year-old woman who had relapsed leukemia with a remission duration of 7 months, and she received re-induction with consolidation, allogeneic HSCT. After 4 days of engraftment, she had headache with fever and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis presented increased intracerebral pressure, white blood cell counts with dominant neutrophils, elevated glucose and protein level. Brain imaging showed diffuse leptomeningeal enhancement w

Meningitis patient can present with various manifestation including hydrocephalus due to multiple reason. Diagnosis of meningitis mainly rely on CSF analysis which is usually obtained from lumbar puncture. In case of hydrocephalus CSF can be obtain from ventricles during VP shunt operation. Sometimes ventricular CSF can be normal in meningitis patient while lumbar CSF shows abnormality. Possible mechanisms behind this phenomenon are discussed here. Patients who present with hydrocephalus and have normal Ventricular CSF should investigated with lumbar CSF analysis in a view of delay in diagnosi

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection can involve many organs, such as central nervous system, including in relapse. We describe the case of a 64-year-old woman with microbiologically confirmed COVID-19-induced respiratory distress whose treatment resulted in a negative nasopharyngeal swab reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) result for COVID-19. However, after a few weeks, relapse occurred, as indicated by symptoms of acute meningoencephalitis. Results of COVID-19 RT-PCR testing from her cerebrospinal fluid, nasopharyngeal and tracheal aspiration specimens became positive again, but COV

Tuberculosis is a worldwide pandemic. Estimated that about 25% humans are colonized by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and about 1% are believed to develop the infection in the central nervous system (CNS-TB). Given the importance of this disease and its high levels of morbidity and mortality, it is imperative that every radiologist must be reminded of the most common findings of CNS-TB as there are several related differential diagnoses for this disease. The most common form CNS-TB is tuberculous meningitis (TBM), characterized mostly by basal meningitis, but infarction, hydrocephalus and tubercul

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) remains common in developing countries. Cerebrovascular infarct (CI) in TBM occurs in 15%-57% of patients. Literature regarding the predictors of central nervous system (CNS) infarct in patients with TBM is scanty, and the outcome of these events is unknown. The aim of this study is to evaluate the predictors of CI among patients with TBM at a tertiary care center in South India and to compare the impact of CI on the prognosis and outcomes in terms of mortality and morbidity.
METHODS: All patients who were confirmed to have TBM and CNS infarcts/stroke

An HIV-positive mother infected her daughter with extensively drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Despite adhering to the then current guidelines for prevention, the infant was diagnosed with extensively drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 4 months and developed tuberculous meningitis. After a short delay, appropriate treatment was initiated, followed by an inhospital stay at a specialised hospital. The infant became generally well, but had delayed neurological development. Secondary hydrocephalus due to tuberculous meningitis required a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. After

Tuberculosis (TB) is the most prevalent infectious disease in the world. In recent years there has been a significant increase in the incidence of TB due to the emergence of multidrug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) and the increased numbers of highly susceptible immuno-compromised individuals. Central nervous system TB, includes TB meningitis (TBM-the most common presentation), intracranial tuberculomas, and spinal tuberculous arachnoiditis. Individuals with TBM have an initial phase of malaise, headache, fever, or personality change, followed by protracted h
