Central Nervous System-type Neuroepithelial Tumors and Tumor-like Proliferations Developing in the Gynecologic Tract and Pelvis: Clinicopathologic Analysis of 23 Cases.

Central nervous system (CNS)-type tumors and tumor-like proliferations arising in the gynecologic tract and pelvis are rare. Clinicopathologic features of 23 cases are reported using the current WHO classification system for CNS tumors, with selected relevant immunohistochemical and molecular genetic analyses when possible. There were 12 embryonal tumors, including 7 medulloepitheliomas, 2 embryonal tumors (not otherwise specified), 1 embryonal tumor with multilayered rosettes, 1 embryonal tumor with features of nodular desmoplastic medulloblastoma, and 1 medulloblastoma with extensive nodular

Reductions in brain pericytes are associated with arteriovenous malformation vascular instability.

OBJECTIVEBrain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) are rupture-prone tangles of blood vessels with direct shunting of blood flow between arterial and venous circulations. The molecular and/or cellular mechanisms contributing to bAVM pathogenesis and/or destabilization in sporadic lesions have remained elusive. Initial insights into AVM formation have been gained through models of genetic AVM syndromes. And while many studies have focused on endothelial cells, the contributions of other vascular cell types have yet to be systematically studied. Pericytes are multifunctional mural cells that reg

Down syndrome with posterior cortical atrophy.

Down syndrome (DS) is caused by trisomy of chromosome 21. The average age of onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) ranged from 50 to 55 years in DS, with early symptoms usually characterised by changes in behaviour and executive dysfunction. On the other hand, posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare neurodegenerative syndrome characterised by progressive impairment of visual functions in the absence of visual deficits and a pattern of atrophy involving posterior cortex. This syndrome is mostly caused by AD pathology. We report the case of patient with DS who developed PCA. While atypical varian

Frequency, distribution, and immunomorphologic characteristics of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified in a tertiary care center in Southern India.

AIMS: In world literature, Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) constituted about 12% of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) of which PTCL not otherwise specified (NOS) was the most common subtype. This study was undertaken to ascertain the frequency and to assess the morphologic and immunophenotypic characteristics of PTCL, NOS over a period of 5 years in a tertiary care referral center in Southern India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Slides and blocks of all PTCL, NOS were retrieved, and a detailed morphologic and immunophenotypic study using a wide panel of antibodies was done. RESULTS: During this stu

Executive dysfunction contributes to verbal encoding and retrieval deficits in posterior cortical atrophy.

Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome that typically presents with predominant visual and spatial impairments. The early diagnostic criteria specify a relative sparing of functioning in other cognitive domains, including executive functions, language, and episodic memory, yet little is known of the cognitive profile of PCA as the disease progresses. Studies of healthy adults and other posterior cortical lesion patients implicate posterior parietal and temporal regions in executive functions of working memory and verbal fluency, both of which may impact episodic memor

Thalamic atrophy in frontotemporal dementia - Not just a C9orf72 problem.

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder associated with frontal and temporal atrophy. Subcortical involvement has been described as well, with early thalamic atrophy most commonly associated with the C9orf72 expansion. However thalamic involvement has not been comprehensively investigated across the FTD spectrum. METHODS: We investigated thalamic volumes in a sample of 341 FTD patients (age: mean(standard deviation) 64.2(8.5) years; disease duration: 4.6(2.7) years) compared with 99 age-matched controls (age: 61.9(11.4) years). We performed a pa

Cortical Volume and Thickness Across Bipolar Disorder Subtypes in Adolescents: A Preliminary Study.

OBJECTIVES: Neuroimaging studies of adults with bipolar disorder (BD) have identified several BD subtype distinctions, including greater deficits in prefrontal gray matter volumes in BD-I (bipolar I disorder) compared to BD-II (bipolar II disorder). We sought to investigate BD subtype differences in brain structure among adolescents and young adults. METHODS: Forty-four youth with BD (14 BD-I, 16 BD-II, and 14 BD-not otherwise specified [NOS], mean age 17) underwent 3T-MRI and images were analyzed using FreeSurfer software. Cortical volume and thickness were analyzed for region of interest (R

Polyethylene glycol solutions rapidly restore and maintain axonal continuity, neuromuscular structures, and behaviors lost after sciatic nerve transections in female rats.

Complete severance of major peripheral mixed sensory-motor nerve proximally in a mammalian limb produces immediate loss of action potential conduction and voluntary behaviors mediated by the severed distal axonal segments. These severed distal segments undergo Wallerian degeneration within days. Denervated muscles atrophy within weeks. Slowly regenerating (∼1 mm/day) outgrowths from surviving proximal stumps that often nonspecifically reinnervate denervated targets produce poor, if any, restoration of lost voluntary behaviors. In contrast, in this study using completely transected female rat s

Central Nervous System Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma Manifesting as Lymphomatosis Cerebri That Was Misdiagnosed as Neuro-Behçet's Disease: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Lymphomatosis cerebri (LC) is a unique form of primary central nerves lymphoma (PCNSL), which presents as diffuse infiltration of lymphoma cells characteristically in the white matter rather than tumor formation. However, the involvement of central nervous system (CNS) is unclear because of the lack of contrast enhancement. CASE PRESENTATION: We treated a 53-year-old woman with LC and brain lesions resembling neuro-Behcet's disease. She had a past history of acute uveitis and current symptoms of somnolence and gait disturbances progressing for one month. Cranial magnetic resonance

Cryptococcoma of a transplanted kidney in a patient presenting with recurrent urinary tract infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cryptococcosis is an important opportunistic infection of organ transplant recipients. It is the third most common fungal infection of transplant patients and occurs especially in kidney recipients. Cryptococcus neoformans is a ubiquitous fungus which infects humans by inhalation of spores. C. gattii has more recently been recognised as a pathogen. Infection commonly is disseminated affecting mainly the central nervous system and the lungs. Cryptococcoma, a localised form of the disease, has been described in various organs. We present a unique case of a cryptococcoma in a transpla

Human dorsomedial parieto-motor circuit specifies grasp during the planning of goal-directed hand actions.

According to one influential view, two specialized parieto-frontal circuits control prehension: a dorsomedial stream for hand transport during reaching and a dorsolateral stream for preshaping the fingers during grasping. However, recent evidence argues that an area within the dorsomedial stream-macaque area V6A and, its putative human homolog, superior parietal occipital cortex (SPOC) - encodes both hand transport and grip formation. We tested whether planning varied hand actions modulates functional connectivity between left SPOC and ipsilateral primary motor cortex (M1) using a dual-site, p

Electroencephalographic characterization of subgroups of children with learning disorders.

Electroencephalographic alterations have been reported in subjects with learning disorders, but there is no consensus on what characterizes their electroencephalogram findings. Our objective was to determine if there were subgroups within a group of scholars with not otherwise specified learning disorders and if they had specific electroencephalographic patterns. Eighty-five subjects (31 female, 8-11 years) who scored low in at least two subscales -reading, writing and arithmetic- of the Infant Neuropsychological Evaluation were included. Electroencephalograms were recorded in 19 leads during

Reduced Inferior and Orbital Frontal Thickness in Adolescent Bulimia Nervosa Persists Over Two-Year Follow-Up.

OBJECTIVE: Cross-sectional data suggest functional and anatomical disturbances in inferior and orbital frontal regions in bulimia nervosa (BN). Using longitudinal data, we investigated whether reduced cortical thickness (CT) in these regions arises early and persists over adolescence in BN, independent of symptom remission, and whether CT reductions are markers of BN symptoms. METHOD: A total of 33 adolescent females with BN symptoms (BN or other specified feeding or eating disorder) and 28 healthy adolescents participated in this study. Anatomical magnetic resonance imaging and clinical data

Interpreting Biomarker Results in Individual Patients With Mild Cognitive Impairment in the Alzheimer's Biomarkers in Daily Practice (ABIDE) Project.

IMPORTANCE: Biomarkers do not determine conversion to Alzheimer disease (AD) perfectly, and criteria do not specify how to take patient characteristics into account. Consequently, biomarker use may be challenging for clinicians, especially in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). OBJECTIVE: To construct biomarker-based prognostic models that enable determination of future AD dementia in patients with MCI. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study is part of the Alzheimer's Biomarkers in Daily Practice (ABIDE) project. A total of 525 patients with MCI from the Amsterdam Dementia

Cortical interneuron development: a tale of time and space.

Cortical interneurons are a diverse group of neurons that project locally and are crucial for regulating information processing and flow throughout the cortex. Recent studies in mice have advanced our understanding of how these neurons are specified, migrate and mature. Here, we evaluate new findings that provide insights into the development of cortical interneurons and that shed light on when their fate is determined, on the influence that regional domains have on their development, and on the role that key transcription factors and other crucial regulatory genes play in these events. We foc

[Doping for the brain].

The enhancement of physical and cognitive abilities (i. e. concentration, vigilance, memory) has always been desirable for humans. The term pharmacological neuroenhancement refers to the use of legal or nonprescription psychoactive substances by healthy subjects with the intention of cognitive enhancement. To give the most prominent example, caffeine serves worldwide as a natural stimulant. Brain doping, however, specifies the use of illegal substances or prescription drugs beyond approval with the purpose of cognitive enhancement. Only amphetamines, methylphenidate and modafinil have signific

A Computational Account of Optimizing Social Predictions Reveals That Adolescents Are Conservative Learners in Social Contexts.

As adolescents transition to the complex world of adults, optimizing predictions about others' preferences becomes vital for successful social interactions. Mounting evidence suggests that these social learning processes are affected by ongoing brain development across adolescence. A mechanistic understanding of how adolescents optimize social predictions and how these learning strategies are implemented in the brain is lacking. To fill this gap, we combined computational modeling with functional neuroimaging. In a novel social learning task, male and female human adolescents and adults predic

Neurophysiological correlates of word processing deficits in isolated reading and isolated spelling disorders.

OBJECTIVE: In consistent orthographies, isolated reading disorders (iRD) and isolated spelling disorders (iSD) are nearly as common as combined reading-spelling disorders (cRSD). However, the exact nature of the underlying word processing deficits in isolated versus combined literacy deficits are not well understood yet. METHODS: We applied a phonological lexical decision task (including words, pseudohomophones, legal and illegal pseudowords) during ERP recording to investigate the neurophysiological correlates of lexical and sublexical word-processing in children with iRD, iSD and cRSD compa

The potential impact of biochemical mediators on telomere attrition in major depressive disorder and implications for future study designs: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been proposed to represent a "disease of premature aging", which is associated with certain biomarkers of cellular ageing and numerous other age-related diseases. Over the last decade, telomere length (TL) arose as a surrogate for cellular aging. Recent data suggests that TL might be reduced in patients with MDD, however, results are still inconclusive. This might be explained by the lack of assessment of potential biochemical mediators that are directly associated with telomere shortening and frequently observed in patients with MDD. METHODS: A
