Enzyme-modified microelectrodes for measurement of glutamate: Characterization and applications.

BACKGROUND: Specific antibodies are likely to be present before S. pneumoniae infection. We explored cefditoren (CDN) total and free values of serum concentrations exceeding the MIC (t>MIC) related to efficacy in a mice sepsis model, and the effect of specific gammaglobulins on in-vitro phagocytosis and in-vivo efficacy. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used three pneumococcal isolates (serotype, MIC OF CDN): Strain 1 (6B, 1 microg/ml), Strain 2 (19F, 2 microg/ml) and Strain 3 (23F, 4 microg/ml). Hyperimmune serum (HS) was obtained from mice immunized with heat-inactivated strains. In-vitro

Turkey Embryo Lethality Assay of Streptococcus gallolyticus Field Isolates from Poultry.

Since 2020, Streptococcus gallolyticus infection has emerged as one of the leading causes of disease in commercial turkey poults, causing fatal bacterial sepsis without any prior clinical signs except in unusual cases involving central nervous system signs. In this study, eight S. gallolyticus strains-S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus (n = 7) and S. gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus (n = 1)-were used in a turkey embryo lethality assay that were isolated from outbreaks involving commercial poults in the U.S. Midwest. API 20 STREP V8.0 and API RAPID ID 32 STREP V4.0 were used to identify these

Risk Factors for Severe Pediatric Invasive Group A Streptococcal Disease.

IMPORTANCE: An increase in pediatric cases of invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) disease was noted in the Netherlands starting in early 2022. GAS disease can range from mild to life-threatening invasive infections. Clinical and public health decisions rely on timely and detailed reporting of clinical data. OBJECTIVE: To determine risk factors associated with severe pediatric iGAS, defined as requiring admission to an intensive care unit and/or death, and to analyze pediatric iGAS incidence, presentations, and outcome between pre-COVID-19 pandemic (January 2015 to March 2020), COVID-19 pand

The global threat of vaccine-preventable neurological diseases.

Vaccination is widely considered to be the pre-eminent public health achievement of modern history, but declining coverage resulting from vaccine hesitancy and from interruptions in immunization campaigns in geopolitically unstable regions threatens progress against vaccine-preventable diseases. The global burden of vaccine-preventable neurological diseases is substantial, resulting in acute and chronic complications as well as high case fatality rates. In recent years, outbreaks of dengue, poliomyelitis, measles, pertussis, meningococcal disease and Japanese encephalitis virus have been linke

Bridging pleiotropic mechanisms in leprosy type-1 reactions and neurodegenerative diseases.

Leprosy is an infectious disease of the skin and peripheral nervous system. Sudden episodes of hyperinflammation, known as Type 1 Reactions (T1R), are a main contributor to permanent nerve damage in leprosy. The genetic component associated with the neuro-inflammatory phenotype of T1R displays pleiotropic effects with Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we explored the genetic overlap between PD and T1R and expanded the evaluation of pleiotropic effects between T1R and other neurodegenerative disorders. We replicated the association of PD-linked rare variants in PRKN with T1R in Vietnames

Clinical and radiological manifestations of listeriosis of the nervous system - three cases report.

Listeria monocytogenes, a Gram-positive bacterium, can cause infections of the nervous system, such as meningitis or encephalitis, with a particular tendency to affect the posterior part of the brain. It can rarely lead to brain abscesses as well. This microorganism is most commonly pathogenic for fetuses, newborns, older individuals, alcoholics, and immunocompromised individuals. The aim of the study was to present three cases of central nervous system listeriosis. Two of presented cases were rhombencephalitis in males without identified predisposing factors. The third case involved a female

Lucio's Phenomenon in Hansen's Disease: A Case Report of a Condition Not to Be Forgotten.

Leprosy is a chronic infectious and granulomatous disease that occurs predominantly in tropical regions, primarily affecting the skin, mucous membranes, and peripheral nervous system. It is caused by Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. It is characterized by hypopigmented lesions, sensory disturbances, absence of hair in the affected area, and anhidrosis, although some of these manifestations may not be initially present. Leprosy remains a public health challenge due to its wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and leprosy-related reactions. It is a potentially curable dise

A case of isolated meningitis caused by Bartonella henselae.

Central nervous manifestations of bartonella infection are uncommon and can vary from encephalitis, meningitis, nerve palsy as well as ocular involvement. Most of these manifestations are described in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of a previously healthy 42-year-old male who presented to the hospital with 4-weeks of fever and headache and found with meningeal signs on physical exam. He reported been scratched by a stray cat at work some days before his symptoms started. He remained febrile in the hospital. Initial work up was unrevealing, but CSF analysis showed pleocytosis,

Delayed psychiatric sequelae following multifocal central nervous system lesions in leptospirosis: A case report.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infectious disease that can involve multiple organ systems. Neurological involvement is uncommon, and long-term neuropsychiatric sequelae have rarely been described. We report the case of a previously healthy adult who developed acute leptospiral infection complicated by multifocal central nervous system (CNS) lesions. The patient presented with fever, convulsions, altered mental status. Chest computed tomography (CT) scan revealed diffuse ground-glass opacities and patchy consolidations in both lungs. Brain magnetic resonance (MRI) demonstrated multifocal CNS lesio

Perinatal fentanyl exposure drives enduring addiction risk and central amygdala gene dysregulation.

The use of fentanyl and other opioids during pregnancy is a pressing public health issue due to its association with Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) and long-term neurobehavioral deficits. Human epidemiologic studies are confounded by both genetic and environmental factors that differ between exposed and unexposed children. We developed a novel rat model of perinatal fentanyl exposure in heterogeneous stock (HS) rats characterized by high genetic diversity, to investigate NOWS symptoms and its long-term effects on adult fentanyl self-administration, drug-seeking behavior, and centra

Are endocranial granular impressions pathognomonic of tuberculous meningitis or a marker of tuberculous infection? An investigation on a medieval osteoarcheological assemblage from Italy.

OBJECTIVES: In recent paleopathological literature, granular impressions on the endocranial surface are considered pathognomonic of tuberculous meningitis. This study aims to verify the presence of granular impressions and assess their relationship with tuberculosis in an archeological human skeletal assemblage. MATERIALS: The study analyzed the endocranial surfaces of 212 skulls (38 non-adults and 174 adults) from the medieval site of Pieve di Pava, Italy. METHODS: Macroscopic and stereomicroscopic examination of the endocranial surface was conducted to evaluate the presence, location, and

Effectiveness and safety of shortened intensive treatment for children with tuberculous meningitis (SURE): a protocol for a phase 3 randomised controlled trial evaluating 6 months of antituberculosis therapy and 8 weeks of aspirin in Asian and African children with tuberculous meningitis.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a devastating disease. The long-standing WHO recommendation for treatment is 2 months of intensive phase with isoniazid (H), rifampicin (R), pyrazinamide (Z) and ethambutol (E), followed by 10 months of isoniazid and rifampicin. In 2022, WHO released a conditional recommendation that 6 months of intensified antituberculosis therapy (ATT) could be used as an alternative for drug-susceptible TBM. However, this has never been evaluated in a randomised clinical trial. Trials evaluating ATT shortening regimens using high-dose rifampicin and dr

Potential relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and autoimmune disorders: A narrative review.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a spiral-shaped, gram-negative, flagellated bacteria that causes gastritis symptoms. This bacterium, particularly in individuals with a genetic predisposition, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several autoimmune diseases (AD) through complex mechanisms involving the interaction of cellular and humoral immune responses. This review article tells you about the link between H. pylori infection and several types of AD, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Sjögren syndrome (SjS), psoriasi

Retrospective analysis of clustered neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases in captive lions in the early 1970s.

Rustrela virus (RusV), a recently discovered pathogen for domestic and wildlife animals, was identified as the causative agent of meningoencephalomyelitis in domestic cats and various zoo animals including lions. To analyze a past outbreak of increased mortality in lions and to reveal its possible etiological relationship with an RusV infection, this retrospective study re-evaluates 20 cases of lions originating from a zoo in Western Germany using archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues. Animals with different neurologic signs were submitted for necropsy between December 1970

Total-body 11C-PIB PET/CT imaging of systemic amyloidosis: inter-organ connectivity in cardiac amyloidosis for prognostic insights.

BACKGROUND: Amyloidosis is a systemic disorder characterized by amyloid fibril deposition in multiple organs, including the heart, brain, liver, kidneys, and lungs, leading to organ dysfunction and affecting survival. In cardiac amyloidosis (CA), where the heart is primarily affected, the broader impact on other organs, particularly the brain, is not fully understood. This study aimed to assess the extent of amyloid deposition across systemic organs in CA, investigate brain-organ, brain-brain and organ-organ connections, and evaluate their effects on patients’ survival. METHODS: A retrospectiv

Paradoxical Reactions of Central Nervous System Tuberculosis: Report of Three Immunocompetent Cases.

Introduction: Paradoxical reactions during tuberculosis (TBC) therapy are characterized by clinical or radiological worsening of preexisting tuberculous lesions or the appearance of new manifestations following appropriate TBC treatment. Identifying this phenomenon is crucial, since it can be mistaken with treatment failure or relapse. Although widely described in HIV patients following immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome, the literature on HIV-negative patients is scarce. Case Series: We present three cases of immunocompetent patients with central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS-TBC)
