Co-expression changes of lncRNAs and mRNAs in the cervical sympathetic ganglia in diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathic rats.

Cardiac autonomic neuropathy in Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is often a devastating complication. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have important effects on both normal development and disease pathogenesis. In this study, we explored the expression profiles of some lncRNAs involved in inflammation which may be co-expressed with messenger RNA (mRNA) in superior cervical and stellate ganglia after type 2 diabetic injuries. Total RNA isolated from 10 pairs of superior cervical and stellate ganglia in diabetic and normal male rats was hybridized to lncRNA arrays for detections. Pathway analysis indicated t

Spectrum of Radiological Manifestations in Lymphoproliferative Malignancies with Unusual Extra Nodal Soft Tissue Involvement.

Lymphoproliferative malignancies constitute a wide spectrum of haematological malignancies and their prevalence is widely increasing. Non-Hodgkin lymphomas and Hodgkin disease, frequently involve extranodal soft tissue structures in the head and neck, thorax and abdomen. These malignancies may involve virtually any type of soft tissues to any extent; hence many different imaging manifestations are possible which may mimic other disorders. The imaging characteristics of extranodal lymphomatous soft tissue involvement are described and classified here according to the site of involvement in 6 ca

Classification of Systemic and Localized Sweating Disorders.

Hyperhidrosis can be subdivided into generalized hyperhidrosis, with increased sweating over the entire body, and focal hyperhidrosis, in which the excessive sweating is restricted to specific parts of the body. Generalized hyperhidrosis may be either primary (idiopathic) or secondary. Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis may be caused by infections such as tuberculosis, hyperthyroidism, endocrine and metabolic disturbances such as pheochromocytoma, neurological disorders, or drugs. Focal hyperhidrosis may also be primary (idiopathic) or secondary. Frey's syndrome is one form of secondary focal

Inverse association between serum total bilirubin levels and diabetic peripheral neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Several studies have suggested that bilirubin, a potent innate antioxidant, plays a protective role against cardiovascular and microvascular disease. This study investigated the association between serum concentrations of total bilirubin (TB) and the presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in Korean diabetic patients. This cross-sectional study involved 1207 patients aged more than 30 years with type 2 diabetes. DPN was assessed according to clinical symptoms and physical examinations using Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument examination score, 10-g monofilament sensation, and cu

Beta-adrenergic blockade increases GLUT4 and improves glycemic control in insulin-treated diabetic Wistar rats.

OBJECTIVE: Unequivocal modulation of glycemic homeostasis by chronic beta-adrenergic blockade in diabetes has never been demonstrated. This study investigates the participation of beta-adrenergic system in glycemic control and muscle glucose transporter GLUT4 expression in insulin-treated diabetic rats. METHODS: Insulin-treated diabetic Wistar (W) or spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were additionally treated with propranolol, and glycemic homeostasis and expression of some target mRNAs and proteins in soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles were analyzed. RESULTS: Insulin imp

Surgical management of syringomyelia unrelated to Chiari malformation or spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE: Syringomyelia is a misleading disease since the problem always lies elsewhere. Arachnoiditis, because it is radiographically difficult to discern, is an especially insidious cause. To better guide selection from among surgical treatment options for syringomyelia, we reviewed our case series of patients without Chiari malformation or spinal injury. METHODS: Excluding syringomyelia due to Chiari malformation, spinal cord injury, and tumors, 32 patients (mean age 44 years) were operated on between 1995 and 2013 and followed up for a mean of 53.8 months. Presumed causes at diagnosis, cli

Intramedullary spinal cord metastases: an increasingly common diagnosis.

OBJECT Intramedullary spinal cord metastases (ISCM) represent a small proportion of intramedullary tumors. However, with the lifespans of patients with malignant tumors increasing, incidents of ISCM are on the rise. Due to threateningly severe disabilities in patients, accompanied by limited life expectancy, every attempt should be made to treat these tumors the same way as metastases elsewhere in the CNS, with the goal of complete removal of the ISCM and preservation of neurological functions. The object of this study is to retrospectively analyze the experiences of 22 patients who were surgi

The search for the mechanism of early sympathetic islet neuropathy in autoimmune diabetes.

This review outlines our search for the mechanism causing the early loss of islet sympathetic nerves in autoimmune diabetes. Since our previous work has documented the importance of autonomic stimulation of glucagon secretion during hypoglycaemia, the loss of these nerves may contribute to the known impairment of this specific glucagon response early in human type 1 diabetes. We therefore briefly review the contribution that autonomic activation, and sympathetic neural activation in particular, makes to the subsequent glucagon response to hypoglycaemia. We also detail evidence that animal mode

Contact heat-evoked potential stimulation for the evaluation of small nerve fiber function.

BACKGROUND: Small fiber peripheral neuropathy (SFN) is emerging as a common complication in diabetes. Currently there are few, not easily available methods of determining the integrity of small nerve fibers. This study was designed to determine the utility of a noninvasive technique, contact heat-evoked potential stimulation (CHEPS), on the identification of SFN and compare it with standardized measures of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We evaluated 31 healthy controls and 30 participants with type 2 diabetes and DPN using neurologic examination, nerve conduction

Simple function tests for autonomic neuropathy have a higher predictive value on all-cause mortality in diabetes compared to 24-h heart rate variability.

AIM: To compare the long-term predictive power of heart rate variability (HRV) based on 24 h ECG recordings with a battery of simple autonomic function tests with regard to all-cause mortality in diabetic individuals. METHODS: 240 diabetic persons were randomly selected from the diabetic population. A 24-h ECG was obtained and analysed on the Pathfinder 700. In the RR Tools Program time domain and frequency domain parameters were computed. Five function tests were conducted: Valsalva ratio, heart rate response to standing (30:15 ratio), expiration/inspiration ratio (E/I ratio), orthostatic bl

[Changes in the cardiovascular system in selected endocrinopathies in children].

Hormones have influence on many tissues and organs including the cardiovascular system. This article analyzes fluctuations that happen in a child's cardiovascular system in selected endocrinopathies. We are pointing out the higher risk, in the course of diabetes, of development of arterial hypertension and atherosclerosis including participating mechanisms in their pathogenesis - disorders of the lipid metabolism, hiperinsulinaemia, insulin resistance or/and autonomic neuropathy. We are describing how the increased and reduced action of thyroid hormones on certain molecular pathways in the hea

Surgical treatment and outcomes of metastatic breast cancer to the spine.

Metastatic vertebral body and spinal epidural lesions cause significant pain and neurological morbidity and negatively impact quality of life and survival. In instances of metastatic epidural spinal cord compression, treatment typically involves surgery and radiotherapy. The incidence of spinal metastases in breast cancer patients is high. In the light of recent improvements in survival among some patients with breast cancer, we reviewed the treatments and outcomes for patients with breast cancer who presented to our institution with metastatic epidural spinal cord compression. We identified a

Nuclear phosphoinositides and their roles in cell biology and disease.

Since the late 1980s, a growing body of evidence has documented that phosphoinositides and their metabolizing enzymes, which regulate a large variety of cellular functions both in the cytoplasm and at the plasma membrane, are present also within the nucleus, where they are involved in processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival. Remarkably, nuclear phosphoinositide metabolism operates independently from that present elsewhere in the cell. Although nuclear phosphoinositides generate second messengers such as diacylglycerol and inositol 1,4,5 trisphosphate, it is becoming

Drug suicide: a sex-equal cause of death in 16 European countries.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of international research on suicide by drug overdose as a preventable suicide method. Sex- and age-specific rates of suicide by drug self-poisoning (ICD-10, X60-64) and the distribution of drug types used in 16 European countries were studied, and compared with other self-poisoning methods (X65-69) and intentional self-injury (X70-84). METHODS: Data for 2000-04/05 were collected from national statistical offices. Age-adjusted suicide rates, and age and sex distributions, were calculated. RESULTS: No pronounced sex differences in drug self-poisoning rates were fou

Perioperative considerations in diabetic patients.

Diabetes mellitus is an increasingly common disease that affects people of all ages, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Diabetic patients require more frequent hospitalization, have greater lengths of stay, and cost more to manage than non-diabetics. The major risk factors for diabetics undergoing surgery are the end-organ diseases associated with diabetes: cardiovascular disease, autonomic neuropathy and immune deficiency. Physicians should pay extra attention to preoperative and preprocedure evaluation and treatment of these diseases to ensure optimal perioperative management.
