OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to study the epidemiology of urogenital trichomoniasis in the setting of systematic screening of STIs, using a multiplex molecular assay. Besides, the specificity for T. vaginalis detection of the syndromic panel was assessed comparatively to an in-house PCR.

The article discusses the possible etiological factors in the development of chronic bacterial prostatitis. The authors presented a comparative long-term analysis of morbidity from non-viral sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Russia. Against the background of general decline in STIs incidence, a significant percentage of them is made up by urogenital trichomoniasis. The findings substantiated the advantages of combination therapy (ornidazole and ofloxacin) for bacterial urinary tract infections.

The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of metronidazole and ornidazole in the treatment of urogenital trichomoniasis in men. The drugs were used randomly in usual doses as monotherapy: 210 patients, metronidazole and 217 patients, ornidazole. The clinical efficacy of metronidazole and ornidazole was stated in 57.6 and 94.5% of the patients and the microbiological efficacy was stated in 77.1 and 98.2% of the patients respectively. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) was used to detect antibodies to Trichomonas vaginalis in sera from Zimbabwe. The EIA showed a sensitivity of 95 and 94% when compared with vaginal swab culture among women attending a family planning clinic (FPC) and female commercial sex workers (CSW) respectively. Although Trichomonas vaginalis is a common sexually transmitted pathogen, the significance and natural history of trichomoniasis remain undefined in the male patient. We conducted a longitudinal study to examine the relationship of T. vaginalis to nongonococcal urethritis in men and to increase our understanding of the natural history of this infection. Trichomonas vaginalis is a frequently encountered genital pathogen in both males and females. In females, vaginitis due to this parasite is one of the most common manifestation. The indirect fluorescent technique (IFA) test was carried out to detect antitrichomonal antibodies in 370 female patients using whole cell antigen. Immunoprecipitation combined with electrophoresis in gelatin-polyacrylamide gels was successfully used for detection of antibodies against numerous proteinases of Trichomonas vaginalis in infected patients. Inoculations of scrapings of the rectal mucosa from 53 women with various urogenital diseases and urogenital trichomoniasis yielded Trichomonas growth in Johnson-Trassel's medium in 8 cases. Vaginal and rectal cultures of 6 patients were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Vaginal Trichomonas were detected in rectal and vaginal cultures of 6 patients. The prevalence of urogenital trichomoniasis and vaginal mycosis in 698 female prison inmates in Bratislava was compared with the occurrence of the diseases recorded twenty years ago.
