We present a case of sebaceous carcinoma presenting as treatment-resistant chalazion. Diagnosis was made by excisional biopsy after failed treatment with warm compresses, eyelid hygiene and erythromycin ointment. Conjunctival map biopsies excluded local spread. MRI of the orbits and whole-body positron emission tomography demonstrated no metastatic disease. Definitive treatment was accomplished by wide local excision with no recurrence at 1-year follow-up. Sebaceous carcinoma often masquerades as benign diagnoses, such as blepharitis and chalazion, yet it is an aggressive cancer with high rate

Adalimumab is a widely used tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor that is rarely associated with ophthalmic adverse events. Herein, we report a case of multiple bilateral chalazia that developed after adalimumab therapy. A 32-year-old woman was treated with adalimumab for uveitis associated with generalized pustular psoriasis, with coexisting psoriatic arthritis. She initially experienced systemic and ocular symptom improvement after starting adalimumab; however, five months later, bilateral chalazia resistant to conservative management developed, requiring surgical intervention. BACKGROUND: Blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and chalazia are common disorders impacting quality of life. This population-based, pharmacovigilance study aims to identify systemic drugs disproportionately linked to these disorders.
METHODS: Data from the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) were analysed (Q4 2003 to Q2 2024). Disproportionality analyses were conducted to identify drugs with ≥10 primary suspect reports for which cases of blepharitis, MGD, or chalazion were overreported, using reporting odds ratios (RORs).
RESULTS: 1923 blepharitis,

Pediatric myasthenia gravis (PMG), while uncommon, poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its potential impact on development and its often subtle initial symptoms, such as ptosis and diplopia. This case report details an unusual presentation of PMG in a three-year-old female, initially diagnosed with a chalazion, highlighting the complexity of diagnosing this autoimmune neuromuscular disorder in children. Despite treatment for the assumed chalazion, the child's ptosis persisted, and disparities in visual acuity between her eyes became evident. The turning point in her diagnosis came d

This study investigated potential associations between ectropion and various chronic and systemic inflammatory diseases affecting the eyelids and ocular surface. This retrospective case-control study, spanning 2001-2022, used electronic medical records from Clalit Health Services (CHS) in Israel. Patients diagnosed with involutional ectropion served as the case group, while two control groups were used for comparison: one comprising patients diagnosed with senile cataract and the other with various ophthalmic diseases. Matching for the control groups was performed at a 1:3 ratio based on year

OBJECTIVE: There is a shortage of pediatric eye specialists. Inaccessible eye care may lead parents to bring their children to the emergency department (ED) to address eye problems that could have been handled at a clinic visit. This study aimed to determine the association between childhood eye-related ED visits and the location and density of pediatric eye specialists in California.
DESIGN: A population-based cross-sectional study.
PARTICIPANTS: All California ED visits between January 2012 and December 2021 for patients ≤18 years of age were identified using the California Office of Healt

BACKGROUND: Chalazion is common in children which can lead to cosmetically disfiguring, ptosis, astigmatism, and affect the quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution patterns of serum total immunoglobulin E (T-IgE) and specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) levels in children with chalazia, further to explore the clinical significance of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the development of chalazion.
METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study enrolled children with chalazion or allergic conjunctivitis (AC) in Hubei, China, from June 2020 to December 2021. The food an

Sebaceous carcinoma, an uncommon malignant neoplasm, often arises de novo from periocular sebaceous glands. Commonly manifesting as diffuse eyelid thickening, sebaceous carcinoma can mimic other inflammatory processes such as persistent chalazion or blepharitis. Delayed diagnosis often complicates the disease course due to its indolent presentation. Described is a rare case of sebaceous carcinoma entirely confined to the conjunctival epithelium of the upper eyelid. An 80-year-old female presented for evaluation of bothersome "cysts" under her left upper lid as well as blurry vision in her left

Primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma (PCMC) is a malignant adnexal tumor that masquerades as a benign periocular lesion. We present a case of a 29-year-old male with an eyelid PCMC misdiagnosed as a chalazion. He underwent Mohs microscopic surgery for definitive treatment, with no recurrence at his 36 month follow up. Given the rarity and poorer prognosis in younger patients, a high index of suspicion is crucial for biopsying periocular lesions that fail conservative therapy.

Demodex species are permanent parasites of pilosebaceous units infesting humans worldwide. Of the two species associated with the human host, Demodex folliculorum is much more commonly detected and occurs more abundantly in hair follicles and Zeiss glands. Demodex brevis, on the other hand, is mainly associated with the sebaceous and meibomian glands, all over the body. The infestation is usually chronic, and the troublesome ocular and skin symptoms often make it difficult for patients to function in both a social and professional context. Despite this, diagnostics for Demodex spp. are still n

BACKGROUND: Angiosarcoma is an extremely rare malignant tumor. So far, only about 42 cases of angiosarcoma involving the eyelids have been reported. Eyelid angiosarcoma occurs more frequently in elderly Caucasian males and is prone to misdiagnosis. We present a case report in a young Asian male patient with eyelid angiosarcoma that was misdiagnosed as a chalazion.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old South Korean male with no underlying disease had a right lower lid mass. The lesion was initially misdiagnosed as a chalazion at a local clinic, but a diagnosis of eyelid angiosarcoma was made after

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a condition characterized by clonal proliferation of the phagocytic cells derived from the bone marrow. In this article, we present an exceedingly rare case of congenital/neonatal LCH in a 3-week-old girl who initially presented with an isolated swelling of the eyelid, initially misdiagnosed as a chalazion. Subsequently, a biopsy was performed, and histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of LCH. A staging work-up revealed no evidence of multisystem involvement, and thus, local steroid injection was performed as the initial treatment for the r

Pediatric tumors of the eye and orbit can be benign or malignant as well as congenital or acquired and are usually distinctively different than those seen in adults. Although most of these neoplasms are benign (eg, dermoid cyst, chalazion, molluscum), their location near and within a vital organ can result in serious dermatologic and ophthalmologic sequelae. Lesions discussed include vascular lesions, retinoblastomas (the most common primary pediatric intraocular malignancy), rhabdomyosarcoma (the most common primary pediatric orbital malignancy), Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and metastatic
