Shedding light on pharmacoepidemiology of eye diseases: a cohort study in Western Iran.

The primary goal in treating glaucoma and other eye disorders is to improve the quality of life for the patient while preserving vision, with minimal side effects. One has to understand the increasing demand for health resources by gaining insight into treatment norms and associated costs. Pharmacoepidemiologic studies examine the use of drugs, their effectiveness, and the safety aspects on large populations by observational studies to realize typical drug effects, adverse reactions, and risk factors. This study fills a gap in areas where little has been done, considering that the vast majorit

Targeting Ocular Biofilms with Plant-Derived Antimicrobials in the Era of Antibiotic Resistance.

Microbial biofilms present a formidable challenge in ophthalmology. Their intrinsic resistance to antibiotics and evasion of host immune defenses significantly complicate treatments for ocular infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, blepharitis, and endophthalmitis. These infections are often caused by pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans, particularly in patients using contact lenses or intraocular implants-devices that serve as surfaces for biofilm formation. The global rise in antimicrobial resistance has intensified the search for a

Pretreatment Demodex infestation predicts dupilumab-associated blepharoconjunctivitis in atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Dupilumab has revolutionized treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). However, its use has been associated with ophthalmologic adverse events referred to as dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease (DAOSD), reported in up to 30% of patients. Although several risk factors have been proposed, the role of Demodex folliculorum remains poorly defined. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between eyelid Demodex infestation and DAOSD development during the first 16 weeks of dupilumab therapy. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 30 adults with moderate-to-severe

Epinastine Eyelid Cream as a Practical Option for Patients With Glaucoma on Multidrug Topical Therapy: A Case Report.

Patients with glaucoma often require long-term use of multiple ophthalmic medications, which can make adherence to additional treatments, such as anti-allergic eye drops for seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, particularly challenging. Moreover, corticosteroid eye drops or ointments, commonly used to manage ocular allergy, are generally avoided in these patients due to the risk of increasing intraocular pressure. We report a case in which a patient with glaucoma, already undergoing multiple topical therapies, experienced recurrent allergic conjunctivitis and blepharitis each spring. The use of c

An Ocular Manifestation of a Systemic Disease With Encephalitozoon Pogonae in a Juvenile Central Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps).

OBJECTIVE: Encephalitozoon pogonae, a recently identified microsporidian species, has been associated with systemic infections in Central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) manifesting as granulomatous inflammation and vasculitis. Despite the species similarity to Encephalitozoon cuniculi, which causes ocular, neurologic, and renal pathology in rabbits, ocular manifestations of E. pogonae in bearded dragons are underreported. This case report aims to explore the ocular manifestations of E. pogonae in a clinical case and highlight the challenges in diagnosis and treatment of microsporidial infe

Rare Mimic of Conjunctivitis: Conjunctival Intraepithelial Sebaceous Carcinoma.

Sebaceous carcinoma, an uncommon malignant neoplasm, often arises de novo from periocular sebaceous glands. Commonly manifesting as diffuse eyelid thickening, sebaceous carcinoma can mimic other inflammatory processes such as persistent chalazion or blepharitis. Delayed diagnosis often complicates the disease course due to its indolent presentation. Described is a rare case of sebaceous carcinoma entirely confined to the conjunctival epithelium of the upper eyelid. An 80-year-old female presented for evaluation of bothersome "cysts" under her left upper lid as well as blurry vision in her left

Pharmaceutical and Therapeutic Applications of Royal Jelly for Ocular Surface Diseases: A Comprehensive Review.

Ocular surface diseases (OSDs) are conditions that affect the eye's surface layers, including the cornea, conjunctiva, and glandular network, causing discomfort, visual disturbances, and tear film instability. OSDs include dry eye disease (DED), blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, keratitis, conjunctivitis, and related disorders. These diseases represent a leading cause of ocular morbidity and are often accompanied by chronic inflammation, irritation, redness, and pain. Royal Jelly (RJ), a substance produced by worker bees, has been widely studied in ophthalmology for its therapeutic pro

Prevalence and Clinical Impacts of Canine Herpesvirus-1 (CHV-1) in Dogs: A Review of Reproductive Effects and Ocular Lesions.

Canine herpesvirus-1 (CHV-1), as a member of the Varicellovirus, subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae and family Herpesviridae, is mainly transmitted at birth but can also spread venereally and transplacentally. In addition, CHV-1 establishes a latent carrier state in the body and can reactivate due to stress or immunosuppression. CHV-1 distribution varies worldwide but is believed to have a global distribution. CHV-1 infection in adult canines can manifest as a spectrum of ocular from eyelid inflammation (blepharitis) and conjunctival inflammation (conjunctivitis) to more severe corneal conditions, i

Pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis: A challenging ocular surface disease.

Pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis (PBKC) is a chronic and recurrent ocular surface inflammatory disorder affecting children in early life. It is frequently under- or late- diagnosed, representing a potential cause of severe visual morbidity worldwide. An expert panel consensus recently agreed on its definition and proposed diagnostic criteria for suspected and definitive PBKC to reduce confusion and avoid varied terminology previously used in the literature, improving early and precise diagnosis. Previous evidence has pointed to the role of the adaptive immune system in recognizing and ha
