Retinopathy in Dyskeratosis Congenita and Related Telomere Biology Disorders: Short Telomere-Associated Retinopathy (STAR).

PURPOSE: Dyskeratosis congenita and related telomere biology disorders (TBDs) are rare hereditary conditions caused by genetic impairments of telomere maintenance. To our knowledge, we present the largest study to date describing the vitreoretinopathy findings in TBDs and propose a new reflective terminology for the retinopathy. DESIGN: This is a multicenter cross-sectional study describing the vitreoretinal findings of index patients and their affected family members with TBDs. SUBJECTS: The study included 44 eyes from 22 patients with TBDs. METHODS: All participants underwent comprehensiv

Clinical Anterior Segment and Ocular Surface Findings Across Renal Replacement Modalities: Associations with CKD-Related Factors, Mineral Metabolism and Activin A.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by persistent inflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD), all of which may affect ocular tissues. While retinal manifestations of CKD have been increasingly investigated, data regarding clinical anterior segment modifications and their relationship with systemic biochemical parameters remain limited. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study including 130 participants: 53 non-CKD subjects, 29 patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD), and 48 kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). All partic

Simultaneous and recurrent hordeola and chalazia associated with tirzepatide therapy: a case series.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and dual GLP-1/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonists are increasingly prescribed for obesity and type 2 diabetes, but eyelid gland pathology has not previously been reported with these agents. We describe what we believe to be the first reported case series of 2 patients who developed multiple simultaneous internal hordeola after starting tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist. Patient 1, a 44-year-old woman, developed 6 simultaneous hordeola 4 weeks after dose escalation, 5 of which progressed to chalazia; lesions lessened

Photobiomodulation therapy for children's eye and vision conditions.

BACKGROUND: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive, light-based technology that stimulates cellular mechanisms, with therapeutic effect on a variety of medical conditions. Wavelengths of light are absorbed by intracellular photoreceptors, resulting in the activation of signalling pathways that culminate in biological changes within the cell. PBM treatment has been reported for a range of eye/vision conditions, mostly in adults. OBJECTIVES: We carried out a scoping review of the published literature and collated reported uses of PBM for eye/vision/lid/orbital conditions in children and you

Demographics and costs of pediatric blepharitis and conjunctivitis seen in California emergency departments over a 10-year period.

BACKGROUND: Every year, thousands of children use the emergency department (ED) for low-acuity conditions. This study aimed to determine the financial impact of ED utilization for the most common nonemergent ocular conditions, blepharitis and conjunctivitis, and to explore the demographics of patients seeking care for these conditions through the ED. METHODS: All cases of pediatric blepharitis and conjunctivitis between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2021, were identified using the California Office of Health Care Access Information Database. Cases were analyzed under different billing str

Mucus Fishing Syndrome: Case Series and a Narrative Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Mucus fishing syndrome (MFS) is a self-induced mechanical ocular surface disorder characterized by compulsive removal of mucus strands from the conjunctival fornices. MFS is frequently underrecognized and misdiagnosed because of its poorly characterized pathophysiology and discreet behavioral trigger. We present a case series of MFS and review the current literature addressing its epidemiology, pathophysiology, psychiatric associations, and management. METHODS: We report two clinical cases and provide a comprehensive literature search across PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), and Google Sc

Reduction in Ocular Surface Culture Positivity Following Short-Term Treatment with Liposomal Ozonated Oil Eyedrops.

Background/Objectives: The ocular surface is continuously exposed to microorganisms, and disruption of host-microbial balance may lead to infection or postoperative complications. Increasing antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation have highlighted the need for alternative or complementary non-antibiotic strategies to control ocular surface microbial burden. Liposomal ozonated oil eyedrops have demonstrated antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity in preclinical and preliminary clinical studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in ocular surface microbiological culture results

Besifloxacin-Loaded Nanostructured Lipid Carrier for Ocular Delivery: Formulation Optimization, In Vitro Characterization, and Safety Assessment.

Conjunctivitis, keratitis, endophthalmitis, and blepharitis are among the most prevalent bacterial eye infections. Topical eye drops are convenient but often exhibit low ocular bioavailability due to anatomical and physiological barriers, which may contribute to subtherapeutic exposure and antimicrobial resistance. Besifloxacin (BFX), a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone approved exclusively for ophthalmic use, has poor aqueous solubility at tear pH and is currently marketed as a suspension requiring frequent instillation. This study aimed to develop and optimize besifloxacin-loaded nanostructu

Recurrent Red Eye Misdiagnosed as Conjunctivitis: Ocular Rosacea With Corneal Neovascularization in a Young Patient.

Chronic red eye is a prevalent presentation in both primary care and emergency settings. While most cases are self-limiting, recurrent or treatment-resistant episodes warrant systematic evaluation to exclude underlying chronic inflammatory conditions. We report the case of a 19-year-old female patient with a longstanding history of bilateral red eye associated with pain, photophobia, and epiphora, initially and repeatedly managed as infectious conjunctivitis in the emergency department (ED). Despite multiple antibiotic courses, symptoms persisted. Ophthalmologic evaluation ultimately revealed
