BACKGROUND: Dupilumab is an effective treatment for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD), yet a substantial proportion of patients develop ocular complications collectively termed dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease (DAOSD). Despite multiple proposed mechanisms - including goblet cell depletion, mucin deficiency, Th1/Th17 immune shifts, and microbiome alterations - no upstream epithelial cytokine marker has been clearly identified.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether plasma cytokines differ between AD patients treated with dupilumab who develop ocular complications and those without o

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a major environmental health risk linked to systemic and ocular diseases, including conjunctivitis, keratitis, and dry eye disease. Pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and diesel exhaust particles have been associated with an increased prevalence of acute ophthalmic inflammatory conditions (AOICs). Identifying key pollutants may help reduce the prevalence of AOICs.
AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between atmospheric pollution and AOICs by identifying pollutants with the most consistent impact on AOIC prevalence, d

Ophthalmologic symptoms are reported in 10-67% of psoriasis (Ps) cases and affect up to 31% of patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). The most common include blepharitis, eyelid involvement, uveitis, dry eye syndrome, conjunctivitis, corneal changes, and cataract. Despite the relatively common eye involvement, these symptoms are often overlooked or inadequately managed. Therefore, dermatologists and rheumatologists should interview patients for eye-related complaints to effectively identify and treat patients with ocular manifestations. In some cases, direct collaboration with ophthalmologis

Ocular infections can affect the ocular surface and adnexal structures, intraocular structures, or both. Infections of the ocular surface and adnexa often arise from the invasion of commensals when typical barriers are compromised, which includes infectious blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, dacryocystitis, and orbital infections, among others. Intraocular infections may develop due to localised trauma or as part of a systemic condition. A variety of viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and helminths can cause intraocular illness. Occasionally, ocular abnormalities are the only external cl

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, Th2-driven inflammatory esophageal disease frequently associated with atopic disorders. However, ocular comorbidities in EoE, particularly allergic conjunctivitis, have not been well characterized. In this study, we compare the incidence of ocular outcomes, with a focus on allergic conjunctivitis, between patients with EoE and matched controls with gastroesophageal reflux disease with esophagitis (GERD-E).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, propensity score-matched cohort study using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network, includi

Pediatric phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis (PKC) is a common nodular inflammatory disorder characterized by the presence of phlyctenules, which are raised yellow-gray lesions on the conjunctiva or cornea. As an entity on the spectrum of disease of pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis, PKC involves a dysregulated immune response focused on a type IV hypersensitivity reaction. PKC classically has an antigenic trigger from an infectious microbe and is frequently co-morbid with conditions such as rosacea, demodicosis, and blepharitis. Clinically, patients present with ocular irritation, and exa

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin disease that may be associated with ocular manifestations, most commonly uveitis, keratoconjunctivitis, and blepharitis. Strabismus has been rarely reported in association with psoriasis. We present a woman with longstanding psoriasis, who developed acquired intermittent alternating esotropia with diplopia; she was later diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. This case describes an uncommon ocular finding occurring with psoriasis and underscores the importance of coordinated, multidisciplinary care when new ocular or systemic symptoms arise.

Ocular allergy represents one of the most frequent yet under-recognized manifestations of pediatric allergic disorders, affecting up to 30% of children worldwide. The disease encompasses a spectrum ranging from mild, intermittent seasonal or perennial allergic conjunctivitis to severe, vision-threatening forms such as vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC). Despite its high prevalence and the strong association with systemic allergic diseases-including asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis-the involvement of pediatric allergists in routine ocular all

Demodex blepharitis is a prevalent but often overlooked form of eyelid inflammation with significant impact on ocular surface health. Recent insights into the pathogenesis, especially the role of Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis, highlight its clinical relevance. The investigation and introduction of specifically efffective treatment approaches provide the prospect of expanded treatment options.

Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL), caused by Leishmania infantum, is a multisystemic disease in which ocular involvement is frequent but often underestimated. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the clinical, ophthalmological, parasitological, hematological, biochemical, and histopathological alterations in dogs naturally infected with L. infantum from an endemic area of northeastern Brazil, with special emphasis on the relationship between ocular manifestations and systemic disease. Twenty-five symptomatic dogs were evaluated through clinical and ophthalmological examinations, para

Periocular Demodex infestation is common but exhibits a wide range of clinical presentations. We report a unique case expanding the clinical spectrum of periocular demodicosis. A 61-year-old Caucasian man with a history of multiple cutaneous malignancies presented with a 10 x 6 mm yellow plaque of the left upper pretarsal eyelid for one year associated with intermittent foreign body sensation. Examination demonstrated eyelid margin and lash line involvement with blepharitis, collarettes, and meibomian gland dysfunction. Biopsies of the lesion and eyelid margin were performed and revealed granu

With several international outbreaks ongoing, mpox-related eye disease is increasingly detected, yet data on its prevalence remain limited. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study in four health zones in South-Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, between November 1, 2024 and January 31, 2025, to describe the clinical features of mpox-related ophthalmic disease in hospitalized patients during the ongoing clade Ib outbreak. Routine ophthalmic examination was performed in laboratory-confirmed hospitalized mpox patients. The assessment included visual acuity measurement, inspe

Herpes zoster ophthalmicus results from the reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus involving the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve and may lead to severe ocular complications. Hutchinson's sign, defined by vesicular or crusted lesions on the nasal tip, is a key predictor of ocular involvement. We describe a 57-year-old woman with no relevant past medical history who presented with a 15-day history of pruritus and burning in the right eye. She was initially misdiagnosed with blepharitis and later periorbital cellulitis, receiving topical tobramycin and systemic antibiotics witho
