Ocular surface and tear film in university students who use inhalant substances, mainly vapers.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the state of ocular surface and tear film in college students who are users of inhalants, mainly vapers. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study with 62 participants whose sociodemographic characteristics, ocular surface status, tear film and variables related to vaping were evaluated. Individuals with a higher (5-7 times per week of consumption) and lower frequency of vaping (1-4 times per week of consumption) were evaluated. Symptom documentation was standardized using the OSDI questionnaire and biomicroscopy to evaluate ocular a

HALP score in Demodex blepharitis: A case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Demodex mite infestation is one of the most prevalent causes of blepharitis. This study was designed to evaluate whether Demodex blepharitis was related to novel inflammatory markers. METHODS: 89 patients with Demodex blepharitis and 76 age-matched participants without blepharitis enrolled in the study. Test parameters such as hemoglobin, albumin, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, platelet, WBC, CRP, HALP score, systemic immune-inflammation-index (SII), pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV), and Demodex density were evaluated. RESULTS: CRP values were numerically higher, and albumi

Drugs linked to blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, and chalazion: a real-world, population-based pharmacovigilance analysis.

BACKGROUND: Blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and chalazia are common disorders impacting quality of life. This population-based, pharmacovigilance study aims to identify systemic drugs disproportionately linked to these disorders. METHODS: Data from the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) were analysed (Q4 2003 to Q2 2024). Disproportionality analyses were conducted to identify drugs with ≥10 primary suspect reports for which cases of blepharitis, MGD, or chalazion were overreported, using reporting odds ratios (RORs). RESULTS: 1923 blepharitis,

Topical cyclodextrin minocycline inclusion complex inhibited the inflammation in blepharitis-related dry eye disease.

Blepharitis-related dry eye disease (BRDED) is a common disease characterized by the palpebral margin inflammation and the blindness-causing changes in the ocular surface. Oral administration of minocycline (MI) can effectively treat blepharitis. However, long-term oral administration has side effects. And topical MI for ocular surface disorders is restricted because of its poor solubility and stability. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of a topical cyclodextrin-minocycline inclusion complex (CCH/MI) on BRDED. We further aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these effects. A

Efficacy of topical Ivermectin in controlling human Demodex infestation: Evidence from systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Demodex mites are usually harmless but can contribute to inflammatory skin conditions like rosacea, blepharitis, and demodicosis. While new therapies like lotilaner, niclosamide, and berberine show promise against D. folliculorum, ivermectin remains widely used for its strong antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the direct effectiveness of ivermectin in reducing Demodex mite density in associated skin diseases is not fully quantified. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, the Cochra

Pharmacotherapy of Demodex-Associated Blepharitis: Current Trends and Future Perspectives.

Demodex-associated blepharitis (DAB) is a common condition in our society. Patients report not only uncomfortable and bothersome symptoms but also decreased self-esteem and confidence. Because of its nonspecific signs, pharmacists are often the first healthcare professionals patients consult. What is most concerning is that DAB can cause serious complications within the eye, such as dry eye syndrome, corneal scarring, or recurrent styes and chalazia. Therefore, we aimed to compile both standard and innovative therapies and compare their effectiveness and safety. As shown, standard methods rema

Tinea Blepharociliaris: A Case Report.

Blepharitis is a prevalent inflammatory disease of the ocular surface, traditionally associated with bacterial infections or helminth mite parasites. However, recent studies have demonstrated that dermatophyte infections of the eyelids can trigger fungal blepharitis, and this condition can be misdiagnosed as eczema or bacterial infections due to its atypical clinical manifestations. In this article, we present a case of fungal blepharitis in a 25-year-old female patient, an isolated brown crust around the eye (atypical lesion), and a six-month history of possible exposure to contaminated cosme

Systemic Conditions Associated With Blepharitis: A Case-Control Study.

PURPOSE: Blepharitis is a prevalent ocular condition, associated with significant discomfort and linked to other ocular and systemic pathologies such as dermatological conditions. The pathophysiology of blepharitis is multifactorial, and the potential correlation with systemic conditions including blood test abnormalities is still not fully known. We aimed to identify systemic conditions and routine laboratory abnormalities independently associated with blepharitis in a large screening-clinic cohort. METHODS: This case-control study analyzed electronic medical records from adults who underwen

Topical immunosuppressants for blepharitis in adults.

RATIONALE: Blepharitis is a common ocular condition characterized by inflammation of the eyelid margins, which can cause irritating symptoms and ocular surface damage. Conventional treatment of blepharitis consists of eyelid hygiene and artificial tears. To suppress inflammation, topical corticosteroids, with or without antibiotics, are frequently prescribed. However, long-term use is limited by side effects such as increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma and/or cataract formation. Newer steroid-sparing topical immunosuppressants have emerged as alternative treatments. OBJECTIVES: To assess

Demodicosis Mite Detection in Eyes with Blepharitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Based on Deep Learning Model.

Background/Objectives: Demodex mites are a common yet underdiagnosed cause of ocular surface diseases, including blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Traditional diagnosis via microscopic examination is labor-intensive and time-consuming. This study aimed to develop a deep learning-based system for the automated detection and quantification of Demodex mites from microscopic eyelash images. Methods: We collected 1610 microscopic images of eyelashes from patients clinically suspected to have ocular demodicosis. After quality screening, 665 images with visible Demodex features were

Dry Anophthalmic Socket Syndrome-A Narrative Review.

Dry Anophthalmic Socket Syndrome (DASS) is a multifactorial condition that affects roughly half of all prosthetic eye wearers and remains frequently underrecognized. It is characterised by symptoms such as dryness, discomfort, discharge, and inflammation of the socket surface. Diagnostic criteria include validated symptom questionnaires (e.g., OSDI, DEQ-5, SANDE) and at least one clinical sign such as conjunctival staining, blepharitis, or reduced tear meniscus height. This review describes the anatomical, cellular, and molecular changes associated with DASS. Meibomian gland dysfunction is com

Targeted therapies for meibomian gland dysfunction - The role of antibiotics in meibomian gland dysfunction management.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a leading cause of evaporative dry eye, significantly impairing the quality of life. Bacterial proliferation and inflammation play central roles in the pathogenesis of MGD, creating a vicious cycle of gland obstruction and ocular surface instability. Antibiotics, particularly tetracyclines (e.g. doxycycline and minocycline), and macrolides (e.g. azithromycin and erythromycin), are widely used as adjunctive therapy for moderate-to-severe or refractory MGD. This review conducted a comprehensive literature search of PubMed, focusing on original peer-reviewed a
