A case of a child with anterior blepharitis caused by Candida albicans: a case report.

BACKGROUND: To date, there have been few detailed reports of the clinical findings in cases of fungal blepharitis. In this report, we present a rare case of anterior blepharitis in a Japanese child in whom Candida albicans was identified from secretions on the eyelash roots and present the clinical findings of the patient's eyelid margin via photograph documentation. CASE PRESENTATION: This study involved a 6-year-old Japanese boy with Treacher-Collins syndrome and severe ulcerative colitis who, during a follow-up visit at the Department of Pediatrics at Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical Unive

Facile nucleophilic substitution approach for the spectrofluorimetric assay of natamycin based on diarylpyrrolone formation, evaluation of method greenness.

An ecofriendly, effective, and selective spectrofluorimetric approach for natamycin analysis was developed using fluorescamine as a fluorogenic probe. Natamycin is the only topical ocular antifungal medication that is presently on the market for treating keratitis, conjunctivitis, and blepharitis caused by yeast and other fungi. Owing to its primary aliphatic amino group, natamycin can easily interact with fluorescamine resulting in the formation of the highly fluorescent diaryl pyrrolone derivative. The derivatization reaction was completed within very short time at room temperature in borate

The Association Between Blepharitis and Lower Eyelid Ectropion in a Large Cohort of Patients.

PURPOSE: Blepharitis and lower eyelid ectropion are highly prevalent ocular conditions occurring in 37%-46% and 2-3% of the general adult population, respectively. Blepharitis has multifactorial origins and involves anterior and posterior types of eyelid inflammation. Lower eyelid ectropion results in ocular surface exposure, epiphora and chronic conjunctivitis. This study aims to investigate any possible association between both conditions. METHODS: Medical records of 37,692 consecutive patients examined at a single medical screening center between 2001-2020 were retrospectively analyzed. M

The relationship between involutional ectropion and inflammatory disorders of the eyelids and ocular surface: insights from a large-scale national study.

This study investigated potential associations between ectropion and various chronic and systemic inflammatory diseases affecting the eyelids and ocular surface. This retrospective case-control study, spanning 2001-2022, used electronic medical records from Clalit Health Services (CHS) in Israel. Patients diagnosed with involutional ectropion served as the case group, while two control groups were used for comparison: one comprising patients diagnosed with senile cataract and the other with various ophthalmic diseases. Matching for the control groups was performed at a 1:3 ratio based on year

Ocular Manifestations in Selected Dermatological Disorders: A Narrative Review.

Skin disorders are often associated with ocular symptoms. In this review, we aim to identify the most common ocular manifestations observed in selected dermatological diseases, specifically psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and pemphigus. We highlight key ophthalmological conditions linked to these diseases to raise awareness among ophthalmologists who may encounter patients with these dermatological conditions in their clinical practice. Analyzing the original studies, the most common ocular manifestations include various types of inflammation, such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Add

Rho Kinase Inhibitors in Glaucoma Management: Current Perspectives and Future Directions.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions characterised by optic nerve damage and visual field loss, representing the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma exerts substantial global impact on visual impairment and blindness. The management of glaucoma has traditionally relied on medications such as prostaglandin analogs, beta-blockers, alpha agonists, and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, which aim to lower intraocular pressure through various mechanisms. Rho kinase (ROCK) inhibitors have recently emerged as a novel class of antiglaucoma drugs, offering an alternative approach b

Ocular Side Effects of Dupilumab: A Comprehensive Overview of the Literature.

Dupilumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the interleukin (IL)-4 receptor alpha subunit and IL-13, has markedly advanced the treatment of atopic conditions such as dermatitis, asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis. However, its expanding use has brought increased attention to a range of ocular adverse events-conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis, corneal ulcers, and cicatricial conjunctivitis-that remain underrecognized and frequently underestimated in clinical practice. These manifestations often emerge in patients with atopic dermatitis and display varying severity, posing diagnostic and ther

A Case Report of Rattlesnake Musk Exposure Causing Chemical Conjunctivitis.

INTRODUCTION: Rattlesnakes are pit vipers belonging to the Viperidae family and Crotalinae subfamily. They inject venom into their victims via bites from two long, hollow fangs. When disturbed, they can release a liquid musk from cloacal scent glands into the air. This report describes a rare case of non-penetrating rattlesnake ocular exposure with symptoms. We also discuss pathophysiology, evaluation, and treatment recommendations. CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old male picked up a rattlesnake and was sprayed in both eyes with liquid emanating from the snake. He was not bitten by the snake. He had

Reevaluating the safety of chamomile poultices in ophthalmic care.

INTRODUCTION: German chamomile [Matricaria recutita L. (Asteraceae)] tea poultices are a common folk remedy in Central and Eastern Europe for treating eye inflammations such as blepharitis and conjunctivitis. This practice often precedes medical consultation and professional advice. Surprisingly, some healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, naturopaths, general practitioners, and pediatricians, recommend it as a primary treatment, particularly among the elderly. However, the ophthalmic use of chamomile lacks scientific validation, and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and ophthalmic

A Clinician's Guide to Dupilumab-related Ocular Surface Disease.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) commonly presents in both children and adults with pruritic, eczematous lesions that can have a substantial impact on quality of life. Current biologics approved for AD include dupilumab, an IL-4 receptor alpha inhibitor, tralokinumab, an IL-13 inhibitor, lebrikizumab, an IL-13 inhibitor, and nemolizumab, an IL-31 receptor alpha inhibitor. Dupilumab, tralokinumab, and lebrikizumab are highly effective in addressing the inflammatory response and reducing pruritus in AD patients via the IL-13 pathway, but are also associated with conjunctivitis and ocular surface disorders

Restoring Ocular Microbiota Balance: A New Bioprinted Approach to Treating Anterior Segment Diseases.

The ocular surface microbiota plays a fundamental role in maintaining ocular health, offering protection against pathogens, modulating immune responses, and supporting tear film stability. Dysbiosis, or disruption of this microbial balance, is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor to various ocular surface and anterior segment pathologies, including dry eye disease, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis. This review explores the critical functions of the ocular microbiota and the consequences of its alteration in disease progression, particularly through mechanisms such as infl
