Vaginal douching. Who and why?

Despite the long history of vaginal douching and its estimated practice by more than 67 million U.S. women, little is known about who those women are or why they douche. We addressed these questions by studying 618 women from urban gynecology practices. Fifty-nine percent had douched at some time, with the most frequent reason given as hygiene. The solutions used were evenly divided between commercial and home preparations. Three characteristics stood out among the women who douched: lower socioeconomic status, greater risk of sexually transmitted diseases and symptoms suggestive of vaginal in

Oestrogen binding by and effect of oestrogen on trichomonads and bacteria.

It has been shown previously that Trichomonas vaginalis, a common protozoan pathogen of the female genito-urinary tract, has binding sites for oestrogen and that its growth, adherence and chemotaxis are altered after exposure to physiological concentrations of oestrogens. Two other species of trichomonad showed no physiological response to oestrogens but did have high affinity oestrogen binding with low binding capacity. To determine whether oestrogen binding sites occur in other pathogenic micro-organisms, these studies with eukaryotic pathogens were extended to prokaryotic bacteria. Numerous

Pathogenicity of Tritrichomonas mobilensis: subcutaneous inoculation in mice.

The standard "subcutaneous mouse assay" was used to investigate the inherent pathogenicity of Tritrichomonas mobilensis, an intestinal parasite of squirrel monkeys. C57B1/6 mice given subcutaneous bilateral inocula of T. mobilensis died by day 4 postinoculation with lesions too small to be measured. Control mice similarly inoculated with pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains of Trichomonas vaginalis survived the challenge and produced lesions on day 6 with mean volumes in agreement with previous reports. CD1 mice similarly inoculated with standard and double doses of trichomonads (T. mobilensis

Acquisition of alpha 1-Antitrypsin by a pathogenic strain of Trichomonas vaginalis.

The interaction of alpha 1-Antitrypsin, the major serine protease inhibitor in plasma, with pathogenic Trichomonas vaginalis and the acquisition by trichomonads of this host protein from normal human plasma were investigated. alpha 1-Antitrypsin acquired by intact parasites could not be removed by repeated washings in phosphate-buffered saline. Saturation kinetics were observed after incubation of glutaraldehyde-fixed organisms with 125I-labeled alpha 1-antitrypsin. Evidence suggesting that specific parasite membrane sites were responsible for trichomonal acquisition of alpha 1-antitrypsin was

Host plasma proteins on the surface of pathogenic Trichomonas vaginalis.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis and fluorography and fluorography technology revealed that pathogenic Trichomonas vaginalis was able to acquire numerous loosely associated plasma proteins during incubation in normal human plasma. These proteins were readily removed by repeated washing of the parasite in phosphate-buffered saline. Plasma proteins avidly bound to the surface of T. vaginalis were also detected using a highly sensitive and specific agglutination assay with protein A-bearing Staphylococcus aureus pretreated with monospecific antiserum directed against individual human se
