Familial amyloidosis of the Finnish type (FAF). A clinical study of 30 patients.

The clinical findings of familial amyloidosis of the Finnish type (FAF) were recorded in a series of 30 patients. The onset was in the 3rd or 4th decade with slow progression so that the majority was in good health still in the 7th decade. Decreased vision and corneal lattice dystrophy together with blepharochalasis were common. Signs of cranial neuropathy especially affecting the facial nerve were found in all and peripheral polyneuropathy mainly affecting the vibration and touch senses in 26 patients. Hypotrichosis, tongue and skin changes were also characteristic. Amyloid was found in all s

Blepharochalasis. A review of 30 cases.

This paper presents the findings in a series of 30 patients with blepharochalasis, including the age of onset, sex, predisposing factors, symptoms and signs, frequency and duration of attacks, and length of the history. There were 16 bilateral and 14 unilateral cases. The condition can be divided into an active (early) and a quiescent (late) stage. The active stage is further subdivided into intumescent (hypertrophic) and atrophic forms. The sequelae included excess thin skin, fat herniation, lacrimal gland prolapse, ptosis, blepharophimosis, pseudoepicanthic fold, proptosis, conjunctival inje

Clinical and histopathologic studies of two families with lattice corneal dystrophy and familial systemic amyloidosis (Meretoja syndrome).

Lattice corneal dystrophy associated with familial systemic amyloidosis (Meretoja syndrome) has rarely been described other than in patients of Finnish origin. The authors report two North American patients with this disease who manifest blepharochalasis, lattice corneal dystrophy, open-angle glaucoma, and cranial neuropathy. In one patient, a corneal intraepithelial and subepithelial pseudodendrite was managed by superficial keratectomy, and this same patient benefited from surgical brow suspension for facial muscular weakness. In the second patient, penetrating keratoplasty was complicated b

[Ascher's syndrome].

Ascher's syndrome is composed of the triad blepharochalasis, double lip and goitre. In many of the cases reported in the literature this typical constellation of symptoms is not complete; particularly the struma is not mandatorily involved. A 58-year-old patient with this rare disease who exhibited blepharochalasis and double upper and lower lip is presented. Additionally, subclinical hypothyroidism and alopecia areata totalis were found. In differential diagnosis other causes of double lips or enlargement of the lips must be considered.

A review of blepharochalasis and other causes of the lax, wrinkled eyelid.

Cosmetically unappealing lax, wrinkled eyelid skin may result from various processes including connective tissue diseases, natural aging, and blepharochalasis. Since the end-stage eyelid changes due to several different processes are similar, the presence or absence of prior chronic or recurrent eyelid edema is an important differentiating point. We review blepharochalasis and provide a logical approach to its differential diagnosis.

[Chotzen-Saethre syndrome with oligophrenia and psychological abnormal development].

A weak minded man aged 31 years exhibited with moderate acrobrachycephalia, basal cutaneous syndactylies of the 2nd and 3rd fingers, marking symptoms of the Saethre-Chotzen syndrome (SCS), with dominant inheritance in three generations. Additionally there were symptoms of Ascher's syndrome, blepharochalasis, goitre and broad lower lip. The psychic maldevelopment is considered in association with a syndrome of the frontal lobe. Severe craniostenosis is rare at SCS; cosmetic handicap and obstruction of the nasal airway can be corrected by craniofacial surgeon.

Occurrence of eye disorders and need for treatment in the elderly in special dwellings and nursing homes [corrected].

The prevalence of eye disorders and need for ophthalmological procedures due to pathological processes were studied among elderly people living in 8 special dwellings [corrected] and nursing homes in northern Finland (N = 268). The participation rate was 100%. Hyperopia was the most common disorder found (men: 78%, women 77-78%). Macular degeneration was found in 54-55% of men and 45-46% of women, senile cataract in 32-33% of men and 28-31% of women and palpebral dermatochalasis or blepharochalasis in 25-26% of men and 31% of women. Hyperopia was more common in younger persons, but senile cata

The first German textbook of ophthalmology "Augendienst" by G. Bartisch, 1583.

This book contains various illustrations, portraits and an exact index, testimonials proving the author's professional successes as well as an accurate list of the qualities that should be demanded from any ophthalmologist. The anatomy of the head and eye is described according to Galen's ideas and Vesalius' book. Many remedies, prescriptions and medical treatments are discussed, partly showing the mystic influences of the Middle Ages. Bartisch reports several diseases for the first time: Allergic reactions, sympathetic ophthalmia, hemeralopia, photoelectric keratoconjunctivitis, amaurosis due

Blepharochalasis.

Blepharochalasis is an uncommon disorder distinguished by recurrent episodes of eyelid oedema in young patients. A hypertrophic form, manifested as fat herniation, and an atrophic form, manifested as fat atrophy, have been described. Ptosis with excellent levator function, laxity of the lateral canthal structures with rounding of the lateral canthal angle, nasal fat pad atrophy, and redundant eyelid skin develop after many episodes of eyelid swelling. Fine wrinkling, atrophy, and telangiectasias characterise the excess eyelid skin. We describe four cases of this syndrome in which external leva

Unilateral blepharochalasis.

We present two unique cases of unilateral blepharochalasis. Blepharochalasis is an idiopathic disorder of young adults manifested by intermittent, recurrent episodes of eyelid edema. After repeated episodes of swelling, the periorbital tissue develops premature aging with thinned, redundant skin and stretching of the eyelid tendons. Blepharochalasis is considered bilateral; unilateral cases are extremely rare. Ptosis surgery in these cases may be unpredictable due to alterations in the levator aponeurosis. Simple reattachment of the apparent edge of the disinserted levator aponeurosis may caus

Floppy eyelid syndrome and blepharochalasis.

Floppy eyelid syndrome and blepharochalasis may represent a spectrum of one underlying disease. Two patients with floppy eyelid syndrome and one with blepharochalasis shared important clinical similarities. All three patients displayed eyelid laxity associated with papillary conjunctivitis and ocular surface abnormalities. Histopathologic findings were similar in the three cases, characterized by chronic conjunctival inflammation with normal tarsal collagen. In all three patients surgical horizontal eyelid shortening led to improvement in symptoms and findings.

Blepharochalasis syndrome.

Patients with chronic forms of blepharochalasis often develop eyelid deformities characterized by blepharoptosis and prolapse of the orbital fat and lacrimal gland. Some individuals have an acquired form of blepharophimosis, secondary to the dehiscence of the canthal tendons. In this late stage of the condition, the tendons still adhere to the periosteum of the orbital rims and loss of fixation occurs at the distal attachment between the tendons and the eyelid tissues. This results in a horizontally shortened palpebral fissure and a rounded deformity of the lateral canthal angle. Surgery remai

[Dehiscence and disinsertion of the aponeurotic bundle of the upper eyelid levator in acquired ptosis].

Aponeurotic defects and disinsertion of the levator aponeurosis are responsible for many cases of acquired ptosis. The typical clinical findings in aponeurotic defects are: history of prior orbital swelling, injury, ocular surgery, blepharochalasis; good to excellent levator function, thinning of the eyelid above the tarsus, high to absent lid crease, and normal Müller's muscle function. The purpose of the treatment is to repair a defect or advance the aponeurosis onto the tarsus. Levator aponeurosis surgery was used to treat 18 upper eyelids with acquired ptosis. Local anesthesia and surgery
