INTRODUCTION: Lymphoedema-distichiasis syndrome (LD) (OMIM 153400) is a rare, primary lymphoedema of pubertal onset, associated with distichiasis. Causative mutations have now been described in FOXC2, a forkhead transcription factor gene. Numerous clinical associations have been reported with this condition, including congenital heart disease, ptosis, varicose veins, cleft palate, and spinal extradural cysts.
SUBJECTS: We report clinical findings in 74 affected subjects from 18 families and six isolated cases. All of them were shown to have mutations in FOXC2 with the exception of one family

Fraser syndrome is characterised by cryptophthalmos, cutaneous syndactyly, malformations of the larynx and genitourinary tract, craniofacial dysmorphism, orofacial clefting, mental retardation, and musculoskeletal anomalies. The inheritance is autosomal recessive. No diagnostic cytogenetic abnormalities have been documented in affected patients, and no molecular genetic studies have been reported. We have reviewed 117 cases diagnosed as Fraser syndrome or cryptophthalmos published since the comprehensive review of Thomas et al in 1986 in order to validate the published diagnostic criteria and

We report a family showing autosomal-dominant segregation of upper- and lower-eyelid distichiasis (double row of eyelashes) in seven affected relatives over three generations, in addition to below-knee lymphedema of pubertal onset (lymphoedema proecox) in three. Two children had cleft palate in addition to distichiasis, but without the previously reported association with the Pierre-Robin sequence. Other ophthalmologic anomalies included divergent strabismus and early-onset myopia. This family was found to be completely linked to markers mapped to 16q24.3 and thereby proposed to be allelic to

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare multisystem histiocytosis syndrome of unknown cause that usually affects adults. Histiocytic infiltration of multiple end organs produces bone pain, xanthelasma and xanthoma, exophthalmos, diabetes insipidus, and interstitial lung disease. Differential diagnosis includes Langerhans cell histiocytosis, metabolic disorders, malignancy, and sarcoidosis. ECD can be diagnosed using a combination of clinical and histopathologic findings. Sites of involvement include lung, bone, skin, retroorbital tissue, central nervous system, pituitary gland, retroperitoneum

We report a novel X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) syndrome, with characteristic facial dysmorphic features, segregating in a large North Carolina family. Only males are affected, over four generations. Clinical findings in the seven living affected males include a moderate degree of mental retardation (MR), coarse facies, puffy eyelids, narrow palpebral fissures, prominent supraorbital ridges, a bulbous nose, a prominent lower lip, large ears, obesity, and large testicles. Cephalometric measurements suggest that the affected males have a distinctive craniofacial skeletal structure, when com

A field study was conducted to determine the prevalence of conjunctivitis and Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infections in house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) and other songbirds common to bird feeders in Tompkins County (New York, USA). Eight hundred two individuals of 23 species and nine families of birds were captured and given physical examinations during the 14 mo study beginning in February 1998. Clinical conjunctivitis (eyelid or conjunctival swelling, erythema, and discharge) was observed in 10% (19/196) of house finches examined, and only in the winter months from November to March. U

We assessed the infiltration of CD45RO+ cells in conjunctival biopsies of fifteen subjects affected by seasonal allergic conjunctivitis by means of immunohistochemistry. Correlations between infiltration of CD45RO+ cells and serum and mucosal indices of eosinophilic activation were investigated. The study was performed in autumn and all selected patients showed <<red eyes>> also in absence of sensitising pollens. Fifteen healthy subjects were used as controls. The semi-quantitative count of CD45RO+ cells in biopsy specimens demonstrated that positive cells were higher in allergic patients than

BACKGROUND: It has been a matter of controversy whether abnormalities of organs other than extremities may be a clinical manifestation of Buerger's disease (thromboangiitis obliterans; TAO). In the present investigation, our aim was to quantitatively characterise the configuration of microvascular networks in bulbar conjunctiva, which is not affected apparently, in patients with thromboangiitis obliterans.
METHODS: Nine men with thromboangiitis obliterans attended our hospital and nine male volunteers as normal controls were enrolled in this study. We observed and analysed the configuration o

The practice of ophthalmology and psychiatry meet over in several aspects of patient diagnosis, management & therapy. The ophthalmologists should be able to recognise signs and symptoms of psychiatric disorder. Non organic disorders could have ophthalmologic manifestations related both the afferent system and motor system related symptoms. Ophthalmologist should be aware of conditions like functional vision loss and visual field loss, voluntary nystagmus, spasm of near reflex, non-organic disturbances of eyelid function, ocular and facial sensation and psychosomatic diseases of eye. Many of the

PURPOSE: A case of linear IgA disease is reported to alert ophthalmologists and physicians to this unusual cause of chronic cicatrizing conjunctivitis.
METHODS: Clinical records of a patient suffering from linear IgA disease were reviewed.
RESULTS: A 65-year-old woman with a complicated medical history experienced rapidly progressive chronic cicatrizing conjunctivitis leading to corneal perforation. Undiagnosed gingivitis and palatal ulceration had been present for 5 years prior to the onset of ocular symptoms and vitamin C deficiency had followed the consequent dietary restrictions. A diagn

The aim of this review of hereditary and congenital ocular disease in cats is to present an overview of the most common disorders seen in this species, the pathogenesis of the problems and wherever possible, how they are treated. Several defects are common in breeds such as the Persian, Himalayan and Burmese cats and affect the anterior segment of the eye. Examples are agenesis of the eyelids, dermoids, entropion and corneal sequestrum. Other problems such as cataracts, lens luxation and retinal dysplasia, cause problems of the intraocular structures, but are less common in cats compared to do

BACKGROUND: Generalized atrophic benign epidermolysis bullosa is a form of junctional epidermolysis bullosa characterized by skin fragility; atrophic alopecia; sparse eyebrows, eyelashes, and axillary and pubic hair; dystrophic fingernails and toenails; and enamel defects in decidual and permanent teeth. Substantial progress was recently made elucidating the genetic defects underlying this disorder. In affected persons, pathogenetic mutations were identified in the genes encoding the beta 3 chain of laminin 5 (LAMB3) or the 180-kd bullous pemphigoid antigen (BPAG2/COL17A1).

The purpose of this study was to identify organs and cells to which the edema disease verotoxin (VT2e) could bind in pigs. Frozen 4-5 microns thick sections of organs usually affected in edema disease (colon, spinal cord, cerebellum and eyelid) and organs not usually affected (liver, ileum) from two 5- to 6-week-old weaned pigs were permeabilized with acetone, then exposed to VT2e. Unbound VT2e was removed by washing and bound VT2e was detected by immunohistochemistry. In the eyelid, double-label immunofluorescence was used to identify the cells to which VT2e bound. VT2e was shown to bind to a

Blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES) is an autosomal dominant condition consisting of congenital dysplasia of the eyelids with a reduced horizontal diameter of the palpebral fissures, droopy eyelids and epicanthus inversus. Two clinical entities have been described: type I and type II. The former is distinguished by female infertility, whereas the latter presents without other symptoms. Both type I and type II were recently mapped on the long arm of chromosome 3 (3q22-q23), suggesting a common gene may be affected. The centromeric and the telomeric limits of this region

Five cases from two unrelated families with a hitherto unknown combination of dyshidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with corneal vessel ingrowth, limbal hair follicles with hairs, and Bitôt-like spots in the conjunctiva are described. The corneal lesions were slowly progressive. In one pedigree, autosomal recessive inheritance is most likely, in the other there is uncertainty about the mode of inheritance. According to the criteria of Pinheiro and Freire-Maya, the mentioned cases can be classified into subgroup 1-2-4. The cases under investigation showed no palisades of Vogt like those seen in anir

A syndrome with distinctive facies, poor muscle tone, absent deep tendon reflexes, tapered fingers, excessive fingerprint arches, genu valgum and mild-moderate mental retardation has occurred in four males in two generations of a white family of European ancestry. The facies are characterised by square configuration, tented upper lip, and thickening of the helices, upper eyelids, and alae nasi. At birth and at maturity, growth (head circumference, height, weight) of affected males is comparable to or greater than unaffected male sibs. Moderate impairment of cognitive function was documented (I

Floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) usually affects middle-aged obese men, presenting as a unilateral or bilateral chronic papillary conjunctivitis. The upper eyelid is lax, floppy, and easily everted. The laterality corresponds to the side the patient sleeps on. An association with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been suggested. A personal series of 17 new cases is presented, and 79 previously reported cases are reviewed to give a detailed description of the syndrome. In addition to the classical presentation, patients may present with upper lid ptosis, lash ptosis or trichiasis, lower lid ectropi
