Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) is a benign condition of the eyelid skin, characterized by the appearance of well-defined, bilateral, yellow-colored papules or plaques in the periorbital area. Although patients often seek dermatological consultation for cosmetic reasons, the associated medical implications, especially in younger individuals, hold significant medical importance. XP can be treated through various methods such as surgical removal, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) 70% application, cryotherapy, and laser procedures. Among the laser therapies (CO2, pulsed dye laser, and Er:YAG), which have p

Medicated thread moxibustion (MTM), an integral component of traditional Chinese medicine, has, however, seen limited evidence regarding its application in treating xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) in practical settings. This study was designed with the objective of evaluating both the efficacy and safety of MTM in the treatment of XP. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 79 patients with XP treated with MTM at a single center. The degree of lesion clearance, number of treatment sessions, adverse events, tolerability, and recurrence rate were assessed. By the final visit, 22 patients (28%) ha

We describe the case of a young adult woman presenting with progressive bilateral proptosis, periorbital soft tissue swelling and eyelid skin lesions. Imaging showed thickened eyelids and enlarged lacrimal glands and extraocular muscles, and a biopsy of the eyelid disclosed a xanthogranulomatous lesion with increased IgG4+ plasma cells. Further investigation did not reveal any associated systemic findings, and the diagnosis of adult-onset xanthogranuloma was made. Periocular lesions and proptosis responded to oral steroids, but symptoms recurred on tapering. Sustained remission was achieved wi

Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) is a yellow plaque lesion near the eyelid, which was previously found to be associated with dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to explore the clinical characteristics and potential mechanisms underlying its development by analyzing body mass index (BMI), lipid levels, blood glucose, and blood type in affected individuals. A case-control study was conducted involving 44 patients with XP between 2019 and 2023 and 44 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Data collection included medical history, BMI, total cholesterol (TC),

Diffuse normolipidemic plane xanthoma is a rare acquired dermatosis of the non-Langerhans histiocytosis subtype, often associated with underlying hematologic disorders, with half of the reported cases linked to lymphoproliferative disorders. This case report describes a 52-year-old woman presenting with asymptomatic, yellowish plaques symmetrically distributed on the eyelids, cervical region, axillae, upper back, and upper thighs, which had evolved over a two-year period (images of the eyelids and upper back are not provided). Skin biopsy was consistent with the diagnosis of plane xanthoma. La

Eyelid xanthogranuloma is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytic disorder that typically occurs in children as juvenile xanthogranuloma or in adults as part of systemic diseases such as necrobiotic xanthogranuloma or adult -onset asthma with periocular xanthogranuloma. Isolated eyelid involvement without systemic association is distinctly uncommon. We report a 26-year- old immunocompetent male presenting with a solitary, firm, nodular swelling over the lateral right lower eyelid for three months. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) orbit revealed a well-defined subcutaneous lesion (10x 8 mm) with

BACKGROUND: Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) can cause significant cosmetic problems, and no standard treatment approach exists.
AIM: To evaluate the outcomes of phenol-croton oil application in XP.
METHOD: The medical files and photographs of 10 patients treated with the topical application of 60% phenol and 1% croton oil solution (PCO) were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic and clinical features of the patients, XP severity, extent of XP lesions, and treatment outcomes were reviewed. The cosmetic outcomes were evaluated with the physician's and patient's visual analog scale (VAS) scores (f

BACKGROUND: The thin, vascularized skin of the eyelids makes them prone to irritation and discoloration, potentially revealing underlying issues, such as subcutaneous deposits, and an abundance of pigments like carotenoids and lipofuscins. First described in 2008 by Assouly et al, orange palpebral spots (OPS) present as painless orange-yellow lesions on the upper eyelids, primarily affecting White women with Fitzpatrick skin types I to III. Despite various hypotheses, the exact cause of OPS remains elusive, with no established links to malignancy or systemic illnesses.

PURPOSE: To review the ocular symptoms and the related physiopathology in patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM) to evaluate whether the ocular manifestations can be considered a disease hallmark that can guide the clinician's decision-making.
METHODS: A comprehensive review of three databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase) was conducted until April 25, 2024. Studies reporting intra- or extraocular manifestations of MM were included, excluding cases of other monoclonal gammopathies or therapy-related ocular effects. After screening 1873 initial results and hand-searching references, 82 artic

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic inflammation of the bile ducts that leads to progressive narrowing, ultimately resulting in liver cirrhosis. A 10-year-old boy presented with jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, weight loss, and yellow papules and nodules on the eyelids, elbows, and axillae. A physical examination revealed jaundice, pallor, and hepatosplenomegaly. The laboratory results revealed anemia, cholestasis, and elevated liver enzymes, along with hypoalbuminemia. The tests for viral hepatitis and autoimmune markers were negative. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed increas

OBJECTIVES: Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) is the most common type of cutaneous xanthoma, characterized by yellowish cutaneous plaques commonly located near the medial canthus of the eyelid. Although dyslipidemia significantly contributes to its development, inflammation is also believed to be another element in the pathogenesis, especially in normolipidemic patients. Recently, cell counts derived from complete blood counts have been identified as indicators of systemic inflammatory conditions and have also been under discussion concerning their relevance to ocular diseases. This study aimed to

Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) is the predominant form of cutaneous xanthoma, as it accounts for greater than 95% of cases. It is characterized by the presence of foam cell clusters containing a large amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which are located in the connective tissue of skin, tendons, and fascia. XP lesions commonly present as distinctive yellow-orange macules, papules, or nodules, and are primarily on the upper eyelids as well as the inner canthus. Women are affected twice as often as men, with lesions typically emerging between the ages of 35 and 55. The pathophysiology of XP

Xanthelasma palpebrarum is one of the most common cutaneous xanthomas in humans. Currently, there are various methods available for treating xanthelasma palpebrarum, but the high treatment frequency and recurrence rate remain significant challenges for patients. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a reasonable and effective clinical grading system to guide the diagnosis and treatment of xanthelasma palpebrarum. We developed a clinical scoring system related to local injection of pingyangmycin for the treatment of xanthelasma palpebrarum, which can be used to predict early prognosis and tre
