INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during pregnancy can lead to relevant maternal-fetal complications. The role of other microorganisms such as Mycoplasma genitalium in gestational screening remains a matter of debate. In this context, we analyzed the prevalence of STIs and microorganisms considered saprophytes, as well as their association with pregnancy complications.
METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal study including 742 pregnant women during the first trimester (2021-2023). Vaginal samples were tested by PCR for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma

BACKGROUND: Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) is a motile, flagellated protozoan that exclusively infects humans. It is a significant etiological agent of vaginitis and has been associated with adverse reproductive outcomes such as preterm birth and infertility. Candida albicans (C. albicans) accounts for approximately 85-90 % of fungal vaginitis cases. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of trichomonal and candidal vaginitis among married women attending health centers in Khorramabad, using both conventional laboratory techniques and molecular diagnostics.
METHODS: In this descri

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide each year and remain a major public health concern. The adoption of multiplex PCR, which allows simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens, has led to the accumulation of large-scale data on STI coinfections. In this study, we analyzed multiplex PCR results for 12 microorganisms included in a commercial STI testing panel to characterize epidemiological patterns in South Korea and to quantitatively evaluate pathogen–pathogen coinfection relationships using lift index and phi coefficient. METHODS

Trichomoniasis, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis, TV), is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) among women worldwide. However, the correlation between TV genetic diversity and pathogenicity remains unclear. We sought to achieve simple and effective differentiation of the pathogenicity of TV clinical isolates based on nucleotide variations in key genes associated with parasite colonization. A comparison of genetic structure between China and various other countries was conducted. Haplotype diversity analysis identified that a total of 40 haplotypes (includ

Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection worldwide, with a substantial burden in Iran. However, beyond its documented prevalence, the epidemiological dynamics of the infection remain poorly understood. To identify key drivers of infection transmission and inform targeted interventions, we aimed to estimate the force of infection (FOI) and the infection clearance rate (ICR) for TV in Iran. To do so, we modeled the infection transmission dynamics using a Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) framework. The model parameters were fitted via differenti

Avian trichomonosis is caused by protozoa of the genus Trichomonas, mainly Trichomonas gallinae, which infects the upper digestive tract of birds and is commonly associated with Columbiformes, the main reservoirs of the parasite. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and genetic diversity of Trichomonas spp. in captive synanthropic birds from southeastern Brazil. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected from 281 birds belonging to 13 avian orders and analyzed using Diamond medium culture, Giemsa-stained smears, and molecular assays. Of the 262 samples submitted to culture analysis, 72 (27.4

Trichomoniasis and malaria, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) and Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum), respectively, remain major public health threats, primarily in resource-limited regions like sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, malaria in pregnancy (MiP) poses serious diagnostic challenges due to the placental sequestration of P. falciparum, often leading to underdetection by conventional tools like microscopy or rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). Meanwhile, T. vaginalis, the most prevalent nonviral sexually transmitted infection, exacerbates poor maternal and fetal outcomes when

Trichomonas gallinae is a globally distributed parasite, commonly infecting columbiform species, with the potential to limit population growth. Concerns have arisen regarding its impact across Europe on the declining European Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur) population over the last two decades. This study evaluated the prevalence of T. gallinae in European Turtle Doves in various areas of the southern portion of their western flyway, spanning Spain and Morocco, to understand its potential impact on the species' population dynamics. We sampled 121 doves from May to August 2023, with 55.4% tes

Trichomonas vaginalis is the causative agent of trichomoniasis, the most common and prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) globally, with about 156 million cases annually. Trichomoniasis is a critical public health problem, and it is aggravated due to its association with a higher risk of HIV-1 acquisition and transmission and complications such as preterm delivery and pelvic inflammatory disease. This STI is treated mainly through the 5-nitroimidazole class, specifically metronidazole and tinidazole. However, drug resistance, which can represent between 5 and 20% of clinical cases, an

INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major global public health concern, with a high proportion of asymptomatic cases. Undiagnosed infections may lead to significant clinical, economic, and epidemiological consequences. Patients with sterile pyuria and suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) represent a relevant target population for STI screening.
METHODS: We evaluated the real-world performance of a targeted STI screening strategy based on urine sample pooling in patients with suspected UTI, genitourinary symptoms, leukocyturia, and negative urine culture.
RESULTS:

INTRODUCTION: Syndromic management remains the primary approach for identifying and treating sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in low-resource settings. While faster and inexpensive, it leads to overtreatment, undertreatment and missed opportunities for surveillance. Recent advances in point-of-care (POC) diagnostic technologies for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis and other STIs present new opportunities to improve STI management.
METHODS: In September 2024, the Gates Foundation convened a 3-day expert meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together 44 gl

Trichomoniasis is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection worldwide but remains underdiagnosed due to limitations of current diagnostic methods. Nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase (NTPDase) is an enzyme involved in purine salvage in Trichomonas vaginalis and represent a potential diagnostic target. In this study, polyclonal antibodies against recombinant rTvNTPDase4 were produced and an indirect ELISA assay was developed and evaluated for parasite detection in urine samples. The assay detected as few as 10 trophozoites/mL and showed no cross-reactivity with vaginal epi
