The pathological process typical of measles and mumps infections was reproduced clinically and morphologically in 250 experimental guinea pigs infected into the anterior eye chamber with different strains of measles and mumps viruses. The intraocular inoculation of measles virus induced in guinea pigs the signs of iridocyclitis and follicular conjunctivitis, whereas inoculation of mumps virus induced dacryoadenitis as well as iridocyclitis and follicular conjunctivitis. Following a brief survey of the subjects covered in this paper the author discusses the problem of lacrimal gland tumefactions. These can be divided into five groups: malignant lymphoma and leukemias, proliferative reactions of the lymphatic tissues, dacryoadenitis, secondary and metastatic tumors, and finally miscellaneous conditions; the main nosological characteristics are described.

Two children (aged 18 and 23 months at the initial examinations) were each ultimately found at surgery to have a solitary eosinophilic granuloma of the lateral orbital wall. Both patients had a symptomatic period of six weeks during which time other diagnoses were considered: bacterial preseptal cellulitis and mumps dacryoadenitis in the first case and traumatic recurrent orbital hematoma in the second. Diagnostic difficulties stemmed from confusing features in their histories, as well as the location of the lesion and the deceptively minimal swelling relative to the actual size of the lesion.

The nonspecific orbital inflammatory syndromes are a peculiar group of inflammations that may occur in acute or subacute forms and can become chronic. They may be diffuse or primarily localized to a specific tissue of the orbit. The nonspecific inflammations that are targeted toward specific tissues are myositis, dacryoadenitis, perineuritis, and periscleritis. Each of these syndromes has definite signs, symptoms, ultrasonic and radiologic findings. Chronic dacryoadenitis occurs mainly in males over 40 years of age and is characterized by mild inflammatory signs, such as swelling and redness of the eyelid without tenderness, bulbar conjunctival stasis and chemosis. Familial sarcoidosis is rare. It is unusual for lacrimal gland enlargement to be the initial manifestation of sarcoidosis. Two sisters are described with lacrimal gland enlargement as the initial manifestation of sarcoidosis. Gallium-67 scan was a useful adjunct to lacrimal biopsy in sarcoidosis. Sarcoid dacryoadenitis responded dramatically to a short term course of low dose prednisone.

A case of acute suppurative dacryoadenitis caused by a cysticercus cellulosa in a male of 20 years is reported. The diagnosis was established by histopathologic examination of the cyst that escaped along with pus during drainage of the abscess. The abscess in the palpebral lobe of the lacrimal gland resulted from acute inflammation produced by the presence of an intact larva. There was no other focus of cysticercosis in the same eye, in the other eye, or anywhere else in the body. Postoperative recovery was uneventful and there were no sequelae. Fourteen patients with tuberculosis of the orbit and lacrimal gland seen over a period of 20 years have been presented. The majority of them were between the ages of 4 to 15 years. Localized necrotizing inflammation of the Harderian gland was a sequela to obtaining blood samples from rats by the orbital bleeding technique. The lesion affected a few adjoining lobules that were adjacent to ocular muscles, in contrast to the widespread inflammation of the Harderian gland which results from sialodacryoadenitis virus infection. Lesions resolved in 4 weeks by atrophy of acini in affected lobules with associated mononuclear cell inflammation and fibrosis.

A report is given on two sisters with arhinia, hypertelorism, Peters' anomaly and deformities of the maxilla. The lacrimal sacs in both patients were extirpated because of recurrent dacryoadenitis due to bilateral aplasia of the nasolacrimal ducts. One eye showing Peters' anomaly with microphthalmus was enucleated in the elder patient 12 years ago. Differential diagnosis includes frontonasal dysplasia and the different types of holoprosencephaly-syndromes. Probably this new malformation syndrome is a recessive inherited.
