Effects of common eye diseases in children and their treatment measures on ocular surface homeostasis: A review.

Ocular surface homeostasis plays a vital role in maintaining of eye health. Dry eye disease is one of the prominent and typical manifestations of disruption of ocular surface homeostasis that leads to the worsening of ocular surface homeostasis that leads to the worsening of ocular surface disease when it interacts with other pathogenic factors. However, disruption in ocular surface homeostasis in children is often overlooked because of the current methods of assessing ocular surface homeostasis. This review summarizes the main factors affecting ocular surface homeostasis in children, with the

Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease Preceding Overlap Syndrome of Sjögren's Syndrome and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Literature Review Based on a Case Report.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a benign, self-limiting histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis systemic disorder with unknown etiology. KFD has been known for half a century, but difficulties in distinguishing it remain. Its diagnostic significance is related to the increasing prevalence of KFD with autoimmune diseases in various timeframes. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the most prevalent autoimmune connective tissue disease (AICTD) appearing alongside KFD. An 18-year-old female presented with acute muscle weakness, shortness of breath, fever, and significant weight loss for 5 months

Altered characteristics of regulatory T cells in target tissues of Sjögren's syndrome in murine models.

Sjӧgren's syndrome (SS), also known as Sjögren's disease, is a chronic autoimmune condition predominantly affecting the salivary and lacrimal glands. The disease is driven by autoimmune responses involving the activation and actions of major innate- and adaptive immune cell subsets. However, the specific characteristics and roles of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in SS remain elusive. This study seeks to clarify the main phenotypic and functional attributes of Tregs in the salivary glands and their draining lymph nodes in murine models of SS. Our flow cytometric analysis revealed that Tregs in the

Duplication of the Lacrimal Sac With Three Canaliculi.

Complex congenital lacrimal drainage anomalies are known to be associated with several syndromes and present unique surgical challenges. Duplication of human body structures is uncommon and has been reported in the uterus (uterine didelphys), ureter (duplex ureter), duodenum, transverse colon, and nose. Lacrimal drainage anomalies have been reported in proboscis lateralis. To the best of the authors' knowledge, there are no prior reports on duplication of the lacrimal sac. The present case reports a complex congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction that was associated with duplication of the la

Moringa oleifera hydroalcoholic leaf extracts mitigate valproate-induced oxidative status in the extraorbital lacrimal gland in a rat model.

Dysfunction of the extraorbital lacrimal gland (ELG) can lead to loss of vision due to damage to the epithelium of cornea. The broad-spectrum anti-epileptic drug sodium valproate (SV) has numerous side effects. Moringa oleifera (M.oleifera) is widely used as a food and in folk medicine. The effects of orally administered SV and M. oleifera hydroalcoholic leaf extract on rat ELG were investigated in this study by analysing both antioxidant and oxidant parameters. Additionally, boron level and tissue factor (TF) activity were determined. Protein changes were detected by sodium dodecyl sulfate ge

Presumed Choroidopathy of IgG4-Related Disease Discovered During 16-Year Follow-Up of a Patient With Polycystic Kidney Disease.

Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease is characterized by infiltration with IgG4-producing plasma cells in different organs and the elevation of serum IgG4. We present a patient with polycystic kidney disease in long-term follow-up who developed bilateral lacrimal gland enlargement and presumed IgG4-related choroidopathy at different time points. A 45-year-old woman developed bilateral upper eyelid swelling. Head MRI showed bilateral lacrimal gland enlargement, and the resection on both sides revealed foci of infiltration with lymphocytes and plasma cells in bilateral lacrimal glands. The I

The Potential Role of Exosomes in Ocular Surface and Lacrimal Gland Regeneration.

PURPOSE: Dry eye disease (DED), a multifactorial disease of the lacrimal system, manifests itself in patients with various symptoms such as itching, inflammation, discomfort and visual impairment. In its most severe forms, it results in the breakdown of the vital tissues of lacrimal functional unit and carries the risk of vision loss. Despite the frequency of occurrence of the disease, there are no effective curative treatment options available to date. Treatment using stem cells and its secreted factors could be a promising approach in the regeneration of damaged tissues of ocular surface. Th

Possible involvement of Toll-like receptor 8-positive monocytes/macrophages in the pathogenesis of Sjögren's disease.

BACKGROUND: Sjögren's disease (SjD) is an autoimmune disease marked by lymphocytic infiltration of salivary and lacrimal glands, leading to glandular dysfunction, where CD4-positive helper T (Th) cells and their cytokines are crucial in the pathogenesis. Recent studies have demonstrated that Toll-like receptors (TLRs), particularly those recognizing immune complexes containing DNA and RNA, contribute to Th cell activation in various autoimmune diseases. This study explores the expression and function of these TLRs in SjD. METHODS: DNA microarray analysis of salivary gland tissue from six SjD

Rosai-Dorfman Disease of the Lacrimal Sac.

Extranodal Rosai-Dorfman disease involving the orbit and sinuses is well documented in the literature. However, those involving the lacrimal drainage system alone are rare. A woman presenting with Rosai-Dorfman disease involving the lacrimal drainage system, masquerading as a lacrimal sac malignancy, and its treatment is highlighted in the report described. Minimally invasive treatment for lacrimal drainage system involving Rosai-Dorfman disease in the form of intralesional steroids can be a safe and effective option.
