[Bicanalicular ring intubation of the lacrimal ducts].

Canalicular lacrimal duct stenoses, including phimosis of the lacrimal puncta, are frequent and can sometimes pose major challenges for ophthalmic plastic surgeons. Following the opening or dilation of the lacrimal ducts, temporary intubation is recommended to maintain or enhance the dilating effect. Bicanalicular ring intubation, as described by Murube del Castillo, has fallen into obscurity for many ophthalmic plastic surgeons. This article highlights the indications, the underlying anatomy, and the surgical procedure for this well-established technique.

Artificial Intelligence for Lacrimal Drainage Disorders: Advances in Diagnosis, Management, and Clinical Translation.

PURPOSE: Lacrimal drainage disorders (LDDs) are common in oculoplastic practice, but their diagnostic evaluation continues to depend on tests that are variably subjective, operator-dependent, and at times invasive. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI), spanning conventional machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), radiomics, and large language models (LLMs), has shown increasing potential to enhance screening, diagnostic classification, lesion localization, and decision support in LDDs. This narrative review summarizes the current evidence on AI applications in the lacrimal field, p

A novel surgical technique for bicanalicular intubation without the use of a standard bicanalicular intubation set.

PURPOSE: To describe a modified technique for bicanalicular intubation using standard lacrimal instruments when bicanalicular intubation set is unavailable or malfunctions intraoperatively. METHODS: A modified bicanalicular intubation technique using an olive-tip Bowman probe, silicone tubing, and a 5-0 Vicryl suture is described. Seven consecutive lacrimal procedures in which the bicanalicular intubation set malfunctioned or became detached intraoperatively were included; one traumatic bicanalicular laceration repair, two closed dacryointubations, and four dacryocystorhinostomies. RESULTS:

Programmable Spatiotemporal Magnetic Fields for Selective Multimodal Actuation and Deterministic Decoupling of Heterogeneous Magnetic Robots.

Magnetic milli/microrobots hold strong potential for biomedical applications, but their deployment as multi-robot systems is limited by short-range magnetic coupling, which prevents independent control in confined environments. Here, we present an expanded field-free region (FFR)-based control framework for spatially selective actuation of multiple magnetic torque-driven robots in confined environments. A generalized selective-control criterion incorporating the minimum rotating magnetic field required for robot actuation enables the framework to accommodate robots with different magnetic resp

Exome-wide screening discovers novel pathogenic variants in Vietnamese primary congenital glaucoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG), the most prevalent pediatric variant, is a major contributor of childhood blindness globally. Traditional diagnosis relies on clinical features such as the classic triad (epiphora, photophobia, and blepharospasm), elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal enlargement and optic disc cupping. Early diagnosis remains challenging as the conventional diagnosis often requires cooperation from pediatric patients. OBJECTIVE: To identify the genetic etiology and underlying variants in a cohort of Vietnamese patients diagnosed with PCG using WES. METHO

Recurrent Red Eye Misdiagnosed as Conjunctivitis: Ocular Rosacea With Corneal Neovascularization in a Young Patient.

Chronic red eye is a prevalent presentation in both primary care and emergency settings. While most cases are self-limiting, recurrent or treatment-resistant episodes warrant systematic evaluation to exclude underlying chronic inflammatory conditions. We report the case of a 19-year-old female patient with a longstanding history of bilateral red eye associated with pain, photophobia, and epiphora, initially and repeatedly managed as infectious conjunctivitis in the emergency department (ED). Despite multiple antibiotic courses, symptoms persisted. Ophthalmologic evaluation ultimately revealed

Deep Learning-Based Automated Segmentation and Multi-Parametric Quantitative Assessment of the Lacrimal Drainage System on CT-DCG.

PURPOSE: Primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (PANDO) is a common cause of epiphora. Because surgical outcomes are highly dependent on the obstruction site and anatomic variations, this study presents a deep learning-based framework for the automated morphological and quantitative analysis of the lacrimal system via CT dacryocystography (CT-DCG). METHODS: A total of 151 patients with unilateral PANDO who underwent CT-DCG were included. An automated pipeline utilizing a deep learning network (Attention U-Net) was developed to segment and reconstruct the lacrimal sac and bony nasolacr

Maternal metabolomic signatures for risk of preterm and early term birth in African American women.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Compared to healthy controls, adult patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) are anemic, and therefore have higher cardiac output and Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) to maintain brain oxygenation. They also demonstrate comparatively more cognitive deficits due to either overt strokes or silent cerebral ischemia. However, there are few correlative studies between CBF and cognitive deficits, specifically processing speed in SCD. Such studies are important to develop biomarkers of central brain processing and ischemia for diagnosis, prognosis, and evaluating the effectiveness of
