Phenotypic Resistance of Campylobacter Isolates to an Extended Panel of Antibiotics.

Because of the global increase in resistance of Campylobacter to both fluoroquinolones and macrolides, we explored phenotypic resistance using traditional Kirby-Bauer methods in human- and animal-derived Campylobacter isolates that were concurrently resistant to both azithromycin and ciprofloxacin to an expanded panel of antimicrobials, including clindamycin, fosfomycin, ampicillin and sulbactam, amoxicillin and clavulanic, fosfomycin, tigecycline, and imipenem. Of 235 Campylobacter isolates resistant to ciprofloxacin and azithromycin, more than 94.8% of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter

Risk of Acute Kidney Injury in Salmonella Enteritis Compared With Campylobacter Enteritis: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter and Salmonella are leading causes of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, yet their comparative impact on acute kidney injury (AKI) remains unexplored. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adults (≥18 years) hospitalized with community-acquired bacterial gastroenteritis at a tertiary center in South Korea (2018-2025). The primary outcome was AKI incidence. Multivariable logistic regression assessed associations between pathogen type (Campylobacter, Salmonella, or Others, including Escherichia coli or Clostridium difficile) and AKI risk (reference: Ca

Ultrasonographic Demonstration of Severe Right-Sided Colitis in Concurrent Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157 and Campylobacter jejuni Infection.

A previously healthy 23-year-old woman presented with acute diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloody mucoid stool following raw beef consumption, with a fever of 37.8 °C. On admission, her vital signs were unremarkable. Blood tests revealed elevated C-reactive protein, hypokalemia, and hypoproteinemia. Abdominal ultrasonography clearly demonstrated severe right-sided colitis characterized by marked circumferential bowel-wall thickening (~2 cm), loss of normal wall stratification, and continuous involvement from the ascending to proximal transverse colon. To avoid unnecessary radiation exposure in

The Impact of Antibiotic Resistance in Childhood Campylobacter Infections Before and After the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Southeast Region of Romania.

The world has changed forever as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Antimicrobial resistance is a primary global health concern that places a significant financial and health burden on nations. Patients with Campylobacter-caused infections were the subject of the retrospective investigation. The data show that children aged 1-6 are the most commonly affected by Campylobacter enteritis. Resistance levels fluctuated over the course of the two periods. Nine isolates were sensitive to macrolides, and only one was responsive to tetracycline, which indicated inadequate sensitivity across all classes

A Rare Case of Myopericarditis Following Campylobacter Gastroenteritis in an Immunocompetent Young Adult.

Myopericarditis is a rare but recognised extra-intestinal manifestation of Campylobacter jejuni infection, particularly in the absence of any underlying disease. While Campylobacter is a common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis, its potential to cause cardiac involvement is usually underestimated. The pathogenic process is not well elucidated but is most likely to involve direct bacterial invasion, immune processes, or systemic inflammation. In the early stages, symptoms may simulate acute coronary syndromes and therefore present diagnostic challenges. We present the case of a previously healt

Prevalence and Antimicrobial-Resistant Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in Free-Range Chickens in Northwest Ethiopia.

Campylobacter enteritis is the most common bacterial foodborne disease in humans. Long-term use of antibiotics in chicken production may result in antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter strains. Information on the antimicrobial resistance profile of Campylobacter species among free-range chickens in Ethiopia is scarce. Hence, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli among free-range chickens in Amhara National Regional state, northwest Ethiopia from November 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023. Cloacal swabs were collecte

Campylobacter infection presenting as pseudo-appendicitis in children: identifying predictors for early diagnosis.

AIMS: To characterize Campylobacter enteritis presenting as pseudo-appendicitis and identify distinguishing predicting factors. METHODS: This retrospective multicentre study included all children <18 years with confirmed Campylobacter infection, hospitalized from 2014 to 2023 for presumed appendicitis (pseudo-appendicitis group). Each case was matched with 2 controls with confirmed appendicitis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the potential predictors for pseudo-appendicitis. RESULTS: Fifty-five cases of pseudo-appendicitis were compared with 110 cases o

The disease and economic burden of notified and underestimated Campylobacter enteritis cases and associated sequelae in Germany.

BACKGROUND: According to surveillance data, Campylobacter enteritis (CE) has been the most frequently notified bacterial gastrointestinal disease in Germany and Europe for many years. Presumably, the total number of cases is underestimated because an unknown number of cases is not diagnosed and some diagnosed cases are not reported in the surveillance system. The aim of this study was to estimate the disease and economic burden of CE and its related sequelae in Germany. METHODS: The disability-adjusted life years (DALY) as well as the direct and indirect costs associated with the five-year (2

Process Hygiene Criterion for Campylobacter and Number of Campylobacter Enteritis Cases in Northwest Germany.

Campylobacteriosis is the most commonly reported bacterial foodborne disease in the European Union. Its transmission is often associated with the consumption of poultry meat. In 2018, Regulation (EC) No. 2017/1495 introduced a process hygiene criterion and with this, the testing requirements for Campylobacter. The results of microbiological testing for Campylobacter of chicken carcass neck skin samples from several slaughter lines in Northwest Germany collected by the food business operators and contamination levels (cfu/g Campylobacter) of these samples were analysed from 2018 to 2021. Campylobacter Infections With and Without Bacteremia: A Comparative Retrospective Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Bacteremia with species in the genus Campylobacter is rare, and knowledge of the disease course in comparison with Campylobacter enteritis is limited. METHODS: This is a retrospective population-based study. Episodes of Campylobacter bacteremia and Campylobacter enteritis with a concurrent negative blood culture result that occurred between 2015 and 2022 in southern Sweden were identified through the laboratory database. Medical records were reviewed, and clinical features between patients with bacteremic Campylobacter infections were compared with patients with Campylobacter spp

Campylobacter-Associated Myocarditis in a 17-Year-Old Male.

Chest pain is a common presenting complaint in adolescent patients. Myocarditis is an important and potentially serious etiology of chest pain for clinicians who care for these patients to recognize. Myocarditis is commonly virally mediated, while extra-intestinal cardiac manifestations of bacterial enteritis, such as Campylobacter infections, are rare. Awareness of this uncommon, but potentially life-threatening pathophysiology is important for clinicians to understand.  In our case, a 17-year-old male presented with chest discomfort, chest pain on inspiration, headache, myalgias, vomiting, an

A Case of Pseudoappendicitis Caused by Campylobacter Enteritis Diagnosed by Gram Staining and Direct Microscopic Investigation of Stool Specimen.

Campylobacter infection may progress to a systemic infection through the intestinal tract. In many cases, symptoms are within the self-limiting range and do not require multidisciplinary treatment. In contrast, systemic infections in younger patients may be more severe and require hospitalization. Many differential diagnoses are considered when Campylobacter infection presents with severe abdominal pain, and the initial diagnosis may be difficult. We encountered a patient with Campylobacter infection who presented with acute-onset fever and general malaise. We diagnosed the case in a resource-

Antimicrobial resistance profiles of Campylobacter jejuni and Salmonella spp. isolated from enteritis patients in Japan.

Understanding the antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter jejuni and Salmonella spp. isolated from patients with enteritis will aid in therapeutic decision-making. This study aimed to characterize C. jejuni and Salmonella spp. isolates from patients with enteritis. For C. jejuni, the resistance rates against ampicillin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin were 17.2%, 23.8%, and 46.4%, respectively. All the C. jejuni isolates were susceptible to erythromycin, which is recommended as a first-choice antimicrobial if Campylobacter enteritis is strongly suspected. C. jejuni was classified into 64 seq

Health care utilizations and costs of Campylobacter enteritis in Germany: A claims data analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The number of reported cases of Campylobacter enteritis (CE) remains on a high level in many parts of the world. The aim of this study was to analyze the health care utilizations and direct and indirect costs of CE and sequelae of patients insured by a large health insurance with 26 million members in Germany. METHODS: Claims data of insurants with at least one CE diagnosis in 2017 (n = 13,150) were provided, of which 9,945 were included in the analysis of health care utilizations and costs. If medical services were not diagnosis-linked, CE-associated costs were estimated in compar

Myocarditis as a Complication of Campylobacter jejuni-Associated Enterocolitis: A Report of Two Cases.

Myocarditis refers to inflammation of the heart muscle and may occur individually or together with pericarditis, which refers to inflammation of the saclike tissue layer that surrounds the heart. They may have infectious or non-infectious etiologies. Campylobacter jejuni, a major cause of gastroenteritis worldwide, may also cause myocarditis in rare situations. We present two cases highlighting this rare complication of diarrheal disease caused by Campylobacter jejuni infection and subsequent development of myocarditis. Both patients presented with chest pain and multiple episodes of watery di

Bowel Ischemia Secondary to Campylobacter Enterocolitis: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Campylobacter is the most common cause of diarrheal illness worldwide and is generally self-limiting. We present two cases of Campylobacter enterocolitis complicated by bowel ischemia in a 79-year-old male and a 53-year-old male, both presenting with abdominal pain and diarrhea and elevated lactate and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. CT demonstrated common findings of pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) and portal venous gas. Exploratory laparotomy performed on the former demonstrated extensive small bowel infarction that was noncompatible with life and he was palliated postoperatively. The latter

Campylobacter Infection-Associated Acute Pancreatitis in a Renal Transplant Recipient.

Immunocompromised individuals (patients with cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, transplant recipients) and pregnant women are at greater risk of complicated foodborne illness than the general population. Though rare, Campylobacter enteritis-associated acute pancreatitis has not been reported in an immunocompromised host to our knowledge. Herein, we describe a case of Campylobacter infection-associated pancreatitis in a renal transplant recipient. This case highlights the need for food safety education for the immunocompromised, emphasizes the role of health care providers in encouraging adherence to
