Meat derived from spent hens as well as broilers is destined for human consumption. There are many reports on the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter and Salmonella in broiler meat, but few in spent hen meat. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of these genera in spent hen meat collected at chicken processing plants. Campylobacter and Salmonella were isolated from 47 (92.2%) and 18 (35.5%), respectively, of breast meat derived from 51 spent hen flocks. Campylobacter jejuni accounted for 87.5% of Campylobacter isolates. The highest resista

INTRODUCTION: Reactive arthritis (REA) and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) are postinfectious complications of Campylobacter enteritis (CE); associations with inflammatory bowel diseases and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are also discussed. The objective of this study was to summarize existing evidence on the probability of sequelae following confirmed CE.
METHODS: All studies included in previous reviews and meta-analyses on this topic were retrieved and assessed for eligibility; a systematic literature search was conducted to collect more recent reports. For each sequela, random effects meta

Annually, millions of people worldwide are exposed to Campylobacter, a species of bacteria that commonly causes gastroenteritis and in cases of immunocompromised individuals, can also lead to life-threatening complications. After stool cultures are obtained, the usual treatment for infectious diarrhea involves metronidazole and quinolones such as ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin. Quinolones are a family of broad-spectrum antibiotics known to be effective against various gram-negative infections that also include Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni). However, due to adverse side effects and bacterial

Early-onset sepsis caused by Gram-negative spiral organisms is rarely reported, with Campylobacter fetus being a better known causative agent than other Campylobacter species. We report the case of a 2-day-old girl who presented with hematochezia and bacteremia caused by Campylobacter jejuni. She was born full-term. Her family ate undercooked chicken, and Campylobacter enteritis was diagnosed before her birth.

INTRODUCTION: There are few reports on the causative microorganisms of bacterial enteritis in children in Japan in recent years. The distribution of causative microorganisms is important for estimating pathogens and making decisions regarding the treatment plan, as antimicrobial agents are not required for mild bacterial enteritis cases but are used for severe cases or immunocompromised patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively surveyed pediatric patients who underwent stool culture at eight hospitals in the Kanto region of Japan from 2014 to 2019 for patient characteristics, causative microorgan

PURPOSE: Campylobacter bloodstream infection (C-BSI) is uncommon, and its clinical significance is unclear. The aim of the study was to determine risk factors and clinical outcomes associated with Campylobacter BSI.
METHODS: We performed a single center retrospective case-control study comparing patients with C-BSI (cases) and patients with nonbacteremic Campylobacter enteritis (controls), from January 2007 through June 2020. Case and control patients were matched by age and sex at a ratio of 1:2. Demographic, clinical, and microbiological characteristics were compared between groups.

Campylobacter enteritis (En) is the most frequently diagnosed bacterial En worldwide, including in Japan. Campylobacter spp. can also cause bloodstream infection (BSI), reactive arthritis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. The purpose of this study was to clarify the characteristics of Campylobacter jejuni strains that cause BSI in comparison with En-causing strains. BSI strains (n = 40) and En strains that caused food poisoning (n = 67) were collected in Japan. Our study revealed that ST-4526 was predominant in BSI strains, and the overall distribution of sequence types was similar in both BSI and

Campylobacter enteritis is typically caused by Campylobacter jejuni or Campylobacter coli and is a major cause of diarrheal illness worldwide. Patients with Campylobacter gastroenteritis can be asymptomatic, but commonly present with a wide range of clinical symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and occasionally self-resolving hematochezia. Although hematochezia can occur, acute massive lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is a rare complication of Campylobacter gastroenteritis and should be considered as a possible differential diagnosis in the presentation of lower GI bleeds

Poultry meat is considered the most important source of Campylobacter spp. Because of rising antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter spp., this study investigated the antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter isolates from fresh broiler chicken meat originating from the Baltic countries sold in Estonian retail settings. Additionally, human clinical isolates obtained from patients with Campylobacter enteritis in Estonia were analysed. The aim of this study was to investigate the susceptibility of Campylobacter spp. to nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, streptomycin, erythromycin and

OBJECTIVES: Persistent bowel dysfunction following gastroenteritis (postinfectious (PI)-BD) is well recognised, but the associated changes in microbiota remain unclear. Our aim was to define these changes after gastroenteritis caused by a single organism, Campylobacter jejuni, examining the dynamic changes in the microbiota and the impact of antibiotics.
DESIGN: A single-centre cohort study of 155 patients infected with Campylobacter jejuni. Features of the initial illness as well as current bowel symptoms and the intestinal microbiota composition were recorded soon after infection (visit 1,

Campylobacter enteritis is the most common cause of foodborne bacterial diarrhea in humans. Although various studies have been performed to clarify the pathomechanism in Campylobacter infection, the mechanism itself and bacterial virulence factors are yet not completely understood. The purpose of this chapter is to (i) give an overview on Campylobacter-induced diarrheal mechanisms, (ii) illustrate underlying barrier defects, (iii) explain the role of the mucosal immune response and (iv) weigh preventive and therapeutic approaches. Our present knowledge of pathogenetic and diarrheal mechanisms

Campylobacter jejuni is common cause of enteritis, but biliary infection rarely reported. An 82-year-old woman with pancreatic head cancer underwent endoscopic biliary drainage for malignant biliary obstruction. She was subsequently admitted for management of diarrhea. C. jejuni was identified in stool culture. Her symptoms resolved temporarily without antibiotics but flared up with a fever a few days later. She was diagnosed with acute cholangitis and bacteremia with C. jejuni. Endoscopic biliary drainage and antimicrobial administration improved her symptoms. As complications of C. jejuni di

Surveillance of notified Campylobacter enteritis in Germany revealed a recurrent annual increase of cases with disease onset several days after the Christmas and New Year holidays ("winter peak"). We suspected that handling and consumption of chicken meat during fondue and raclette grill meals on the holidays were associated with winter peak Campylobacter infections. The hypothesis was investigated in a case-control study with a case-case design where notified Campylobacter enteritis cases served as case-patients as well as control-patients, depending on their date of disease onset (case-patie

Myocarditis represents a potential complication of various infectious and noninfectious agents and a common diagnostic challenge for clinicians. Data regarding Campylobacter-associated myocarditis are limited. Here, a case of a 13-year-old female with Campylobacter jejuni gastroenteritis complicated by myocarditis is presented, followed by a literature review in order to retrieve information about Campylobacter-associated carditis in the pediatric population. A search on MEDLINE/PubMed yielded 7relevant cases in the last 20 years. Most of them (six/seven) were males and the mean age was 16.1 y

Recurrent Campylobacter enteritis is a well-recorded complication of primary hypogammaglobulinemia but has only rarely been reported with other types of immunodeficiency, and no cases have been reported after rituximab-associated secondary hypogammaglobulinemia. We therefore reviewed our local microbiology laboratory databases and conducted a literature search, to provide a detailed characterization of the immunodeficiency states associated with recurrent Campylobacter enteritis. Published cases had primary hypogammaglobulinemia, most frequently in the setting of common variable immunodeficien
