Myopericarditis following Campylobacter infection.

BACKGROUND: Myopericarditis can be caused by a wide range of infectious agents. There are a few reported cases implicating Campylobacter in the pathogenesis of myopericarditis. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that this case report represents the first documented case in Ireland of myopericarditis associated with Campylobacter enteritis.

Campylobacter jejuni induces transcellular translocation of commensal bacteria via lipid rafts.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter enteritis represents a risk factor for the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) via unknown mechanisms. As IBD patients exhibit inflammatory responses to their commensal intestinal microflora, factors that induce translocation of commensal bacteria across the intestinal epithelium may contribute to IBD pathogenesis. This study sought to determine whether Campylobacter induces translocation of non-invasive intestinal bacteria, and characterize underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Mice were infected with C. jejuni and translocation of intestinal bacteria was asse

Sialylation of Campylobacter jejuni lipo-oligosaccharides is associated with severe gastro-enteritis and reactive arthritis.

We used various genotyping methods to identify bacterial genetic markers for development of arthritic symptoms following Campylobacter enteritis. We genotyped a collection of population derived Campylobacter strains, with detailed information on clinical characteristics, including arthritic symptoms. Besides using whole genome screening methods, we focused on the lipo-oligosaccharide (LOS) gene locus in which marker genes for developing post-Campylobacter neurological disease are present. Patients with arthritic symptoms were more frequently infected with Campylobacter jejuni strains with a cl

Campylobacter enteritis in the Arabian Gulf.

Diarrhoea illnesses constitute a common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In recent years, Campylobacter spp. has been recognized as the leading cause of bacterial enteritis in both developed and developing countries. The biology of Campylobacters as well as the mechanism by which they cause disease is yet to be fully explained. In addition, non-availability of fast and reliable diagnostic methodology and the growing trend of antibiotic resistance continue to pose significant challenges. The absence of national surveillance programs for campylobacteriosis, particularly in developing

Chicken consumption and use of acid-suppressing medications as risk factors for Campylobacter enteritis, England.

In a case-control study of Campylobacter spp. risk factors in England during 2005-2006, we identified recent consumption of commercially prepared chicken as an important risk factor. The risk for illness associated with recent chicken consumption was much lower for persons who regularly ate chicken than in those who did not, which suggests that partial immunologic protection may follow regular chicken preparation or consumption. Chicken-related risk factors accounted for 41% of cases; acid-suppressing medication, for 10%; self-reported past Campylobacter enteritis, 2%; and recent acquisition o

[Campylobacter enteritis and related organisms. Clinical microbiology and antibiotic resistance].

The Authors underline the importance to always and correctly investigate also for Campylobacters and related organisms (Clo's) in faeces of humans with enteritis, because prevalent like Salmonella and for surveillance antibiotic resistances; in fact for campylobacteriosis specific therapy is often necessary. Between 2001 and 2005 248 strains of Campylobacter and Clo's were isolated: 225 were C. jejuni (90.7%) and 16 C. coli (6.5%). The recommended antibiotics to use for therapy, for preventing secondary effects too, are erythromycin, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline. Among C. jejuni, resistances

[Annual changes in antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolated from acute diarrheic patients].

Two hundred thirty-one Campylobacter were isolated from acute diarrheic patients between January 2001 and December 2005. We evaluated annual changes in identified species of Campylobacter and their susceptibilities against antibiotics. Campylobacter jejuni (219 strains; 94.8%) and Campylobacter coli (12 strains; 5.2%) were identified to the species. Susceptibilities to four antimicrobial agents, minocycline (MINO), levofloxacin (LVFX), erythromycin (EM) and clindamycin (CLDM) were examined. The resistant rates of four antimicrobial agents in C. coli were significantly higher than that in C. je

Campylobacter enteritis in children in northern Taiwan--a 7-year experience.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Campylobacter infection is recognized as a major cause of acute enteritis in humans. The clinical characteristics may vary in different countries. This study investigated the clinical manifestations of pediatric Campylobacter enteritis in a medical center in northern Taiwan. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of Campylobacter enteritis infections at National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, from January 2000 to December 2006. All children who tested positive for Campylobacter, isolated from stool samples, were included in the study. Data collected and

Two outbreaks of campylobacteriosis associated with the consumption of raw cows' milk.

The present paper summarises the investigation of two different outbreaks of milk-associated Campylobacter enteritis in the Netherlands. In 2005, after a school trip to a dairy farm, 22 out of a group of 34 children developed diarrhoeal illness and Campylobacterjejuni was cultured from the stool samples of 11 of the cases. The illness was found to be epidemiologically associated with drinking raw milk during the farm visit; 86% of the cases could be explained by drinking raw milk. C.jejuni was also isolated from three of 10 faecal samples from dairy cattle collected at the farm. The human isol

A community outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni infection from a chlorinated public water supply.

An outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni infection occurred in a South Wales Valleys housing estate. Illness in estate residents was associated with tap water consumption [population attributable risk (PAR) 50%, relative risk (RR) 2.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.9-3.37] and residence in the upper estate (PAR 49%, RR 2.44, 95% CI 1.83-3.24). Amongst upper estate residents, rates of diarrhoeal illness increased with rates of water consumption (OR 18, 95% CI 3.5-92.4 for heaviest consumers, chi2 trend P<0.0001). The upper estate received mains water via a covered holding reservoir. A crack in the

Pattern of antibiotic susceptibility in Campylobacter jejuni isolates of human and poultry origin.

Campylobacter jejuni antibiotic resistance is rising with a variable geographical pattern; but there is limited data from the Arabian Gulf region. We assessed the sensitivity of human (117) and chicken (33) C. jejuni isolates to erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole by agar dilution, disc diffusion and the E test. Only 2 human isolates were resistant to erythromycin. In contrast, over 80% of chicken and human isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin. A significantly higher proportion of chicken isolates than human isolates were resistant to tetracycline, w

Guillain-Barré syndrome and preceding infection with campylobacter, influenza and Epstein-Barr virus in the general practice research database.

BACKGROUND: A number of infectious agents have previously been suggested as risk factors for the development of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), but robust epidemiologic evidence for these associations is lacking. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a nested case-control study using data from the United Kingdom General Practice Research Database between 1991 and 2001. Controls were matched to cases on general practice clinic, sex, year of birth and date of outcome diagnosis in their matched case. We found positive associations between GBS and infection with Campylobacter, Epstein-Barr virus and

Validation of an ELISA for the diagnosis of recent Campylobacter infections in Guillain-Barré and reactive arthritis patients.

Weeks or months following Campylobacter infection, a small proportion of infected individuals develop Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) or reactive arthritis (ReA). Stool culture for Campylobacter is often negative in these patients, and serology is therefore the method of choice for diagnosing a recent infection with Campylobacter. This study developed a capture ELISA system to detect anti-Campylobacter IgA and IgM antibodies indicative of a recent infection. The sensitivity of the assay was 82.0% in uncomplicated Campylobacter enteritis patients, 96.2% in GBS patients who were culture-positive f

Multiplex PCR for direct identification of Campylobacter spp. in human and chicken stools.

Differentiation between Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli is problematic in clinical specimens due to fastidious growth requirements and limited biochemical tests. This study describes a rapid, multiplex PCR protocol for the direct detection and differentiation of C. jejuni and C. coli in stools. An evaluation was carried out of this multiplex protocol based on the detection of cadF (genus specific), and hipO (C. jejuni) and asp (C. coli) genes, using stool from patients with Campylobacter enteritis and chicken. Protocol sensitivity was assessed and specificity determined using a pan

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and Guillain-Barre syndrome associated with Campylobacter enteritis.

Previous reports have noted an association between membranous nephropathy and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis with Guillain-Barre syndrome. We report a case of Campylobacter enteritis, which was complicated by both focal segmental glomerulosclerosis of the collapsing variety and Guillain-Barre syndrome, and propose that Campylobacter may be the common link between the glomerular disease and Guillain-Barre syndrome. We also briefly review previous reports of kidney disease associated with Campylobacter infection.

An investigation of sources of Campylobacter in a poultry production and packing operation in Barbados.

Chicken meat is frequently contaminated with Campylobacter jejuni and is thought to be the major source of organisms causing human Campylobacter enteritis. Genotypic similarities between Campylobacter isolates from chicken meat at retail outlets and patients with gastroenteritis in Barbados suggested that it is a vehicle for infection of humans on the island and prompted this investigation of transmission of Campylobacter in a local poultry operation. Campylobacter testing was conducted at the hatchery, on the broiler farm and in the processing plant for two consecutive production cycles. The

Temperature dependence of reported Campylobacter infection in England, 1989-1999.

Campylobacter is the most common bacterial cause of gastroenteritis in England and Wales, with 45000 cases reported annually. Campylobacter incidence is highly seasonal; the consistent peak in late spring suggests a role for meteorological factors in the epidemiology of this organism. We investigated the relationship between ambient temperature and Campylobacter enteritis using time-series analysis to study short-term associations between temperature and number of Campylobacter reports adjusted for longer-term trend and seasonal patterns. We found a linear relationship between mean weekly temp

Human Campylobacter-associated enteritis on the Caribbean island of Barbados.

A longitudinal study of the incidence of Campylobacter enteritis in Barbados was undertaken from January 2000 to August 2003. Diarrheal stools received by the central public health laboratory were cultured for Campylobacter. The number of reported Campylobacter cases exceeded those of Shigella but were less than those of Salmonella, and increased steadily with each year. Isolates from stools were mainly C. jejuni (63.6%) and C. coli (31.8%). The highest isolation rate was found in children 1-4 years of age (40.8%), followed by infants less than 1 year of age (16.9%) and those 5-9 years of age
