The association between Campylobacter infection and subsequent Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been well documented. To date, however, there exists no direct estimate of the incidence of GBS among patients with Campylobacter infection. Using the General Practice Research Database, we estimate the incidence of GBS in a cohort of patients presenting with Campylobacter enteritis to be 1.17/1000 person-years, a rate 77 times greater than that in the general population. The probability that an individual who develops Campylobacter enteritis will also develop GBS during the subsequent 2-month peri

Myocarditis sometimes occurs as a complication of bacterial infection, including enteric infections caused by Salmonella, Shigella and Yersinia. Only a few cases of Campylobacter-associated myocarditis are known. We describe a 47-y-old patient with myopericarditis in association with Campylobacter spp. enteritis, and review similar cases previously described in the English literature.

The goal of the present study was to assess the contribution of real-time molecular typing, used alone or with clinical surveillance, to the prompt identification of clusters of Campylobacter enteritis. Potential poultry sources were sought by comparing the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis genotypes of human and fresh whole retail chicken isolates collected during the same study period. Among 183 human isolates, 82 (45%) had unique genotypes, 72 (39%) represented 26 clusters of 2 to 7 isolates each, and 29 (16%) represented three clusters of 8 to 11 isolates each. Molecular typing was useful f

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea is a common symptom of gastrointestinal illness, ranking among the 20 most frequent reasons for patient encounters in general practice in Australia. Children under 5 years of age are especially vulnerable to bacterial gastroenteritis such as infections with Campylobacter jejuni. Everyday diet, in particular the regular consumption of pro- and pre-biotics, can help with the maintenance of a healthy gastrointestinal system.
OBJECTIVE: This article outlines the potential of 'everyday standard' food items such as cheese to promote healthy gastrointestinal microflora and to p

Thermophilic Campylobacter spp., mainly Campylobacter jejuni and to a lesser extent C. coli are recognized as the most common bacteriological causes of gastroenteritis in humans. As enteric infection with Campylobacter organisms cannot be distinguished from that caused by other enteric pathogens, a definitive diagnosis can only be made by isolating or detecting the organism from the feces. The epidemiology of Campylobacter enteritis has been complicated by the ubiquitous nature of the organism (commonly found as a commensal in the intestines of domestic animals, in milk, and in water). Further

In Guillain-Barré syndrome following Campylobacter enteritis, anti-lipopolysaccharide antibodies cross-react with neural gangliosides, thereby precipitating autoimmune neuropathy. We examined the properties of 15 murine anti-LPS/ganglioside mAbs specific for NeuAc(alpha2-8)NeuAc-Gal disialosyl epitopes. Many mAbs displayed features of an innate B cell origin including polyreactivity (13/15), hybridoma CD5 mRNA expression (5/15), predominance of IgM (9/15) or IgG3 (3/6) isotype, low affinity, and utilisation of unmutated VH and VL VDJ rearrangements. Antibody specificity resided in highly selec

AIMS: To evaluate the Gram stain with carbol-fuchsin counterstain for the rapid detection of Campylobacter species in faecal samples.
METHODS: In total, 842 consecutive diarrhoeic faecal samples were prospectively examined for Campylobacter species by Gram stain and culture.
RESULTS: Campylobacter species were isolated from 84 faecal samples (all Campylobacter jejuni). Compared with culture, Gram stain microscopy had a sensitivity of 89%, specificity of 99.7%, positive predictive value of 97%, and negative predictive value of 99% for detecting Campylobacter species.
CONCLUSIONS: The direct

After its successful isolation from stools in the 1970s, Campylobacter jejuni has rapidly become the most commonly recognised cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in man. Reported cases of human campylobacteriosis represent only a small fraction of the actual number. In industrialised countries, the incidence of C. jejuni/Campylobacter coli infections peaks during infancy, and again in young adults aged 15-44 years. Acute self-limited gastrointestinal illness, characterised by diarrhoea, fever and abdominal cramps, is the most common presentation of C. jejuni/C. coli infection. The introduction

INTRODUCTION: Campylobacter spp is the main cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in the developed countries, resulting mainly from the contamination of poultry and animal products. Pathogenesis remains unclear. Various clinical features ranging from watery diarrhoea in apyrexia to dysentery in hyperpyrexia may be the result of differences between strains in the expression of different pathogenetic factors. There are many difficulties in isolating the bacteria in question.
METHODS: We processed 540 faecal specimens of children with gastroenteritis. We detected enteropathogen bacteria including C

BACKGROUND: Myocarditis can develop as a complication of various infections and is most commonly linked to enterovirus infections. Myocarditis is rarely associated with bacterial infections; salmonellosis and shigellosis have been the most frequently reported bacterial cause. We report a case of myocarditis related to Campylobacter jejuni enteritis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old previously healthy man presented with a history of prolonged chest pain radiating to the jaw and the left arm. Five days prior to the onset of chest pain, he developed bloody diarrhea, fever and chills. Creatine ki

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was adapted to measure immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgM, and IgA classes of human serum antibody to Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. A total of 631 sera from 210 patients with verified Campylobacter enteritis were examined at various intervals after infection, and a control group of 164 sera were tested to determine the cut-off for negative results. With 90 percentile specificity, IgG, IgM, and IgA showed a sensitivity of 71, 60, and 80%, respectively. By combining all three antibody classes, the sensitivity was 92% within 35 days after infec

We report a case of Campylobacter jejuni enterocolitis presenting as inflammatory bowel disease in a 19-year old woman. After a useless course of corticosteroids, ceftazidime and metronidazole, she was successfully treated with erythromicin. Campylobacter species represent an important cause of gastroenteritis in children and adults. The rate of Campylobacter isolation is 5-6 per 100,000 persons. This rate, however, grossly understimates the actual number of Campylobacter infections. In most cases, Campylobacter enteritis is a self-limiting disease, rarely associated with severe complications.

A steady increase in the incidence of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) with a seasonal preponderance, almost exclusively related to Campylobacter jejuni, and a rise in the incidence of laboratory-confirmed Campylobacter enteritis have been reported from Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. We therefore investigated possible risk factors associated with diarrhea due to epidemic C. jejuni. Typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis identified four epidemic clones which accounted for almost 60% of the infections. One hundred six cases were included in a case-control study. Infections with epidemic clones

In June 1999, the dioxin crisis, caused by dioxin-contaminated feed components, exploded in Belgium, resulting in withdrawal of chicken and eggs from the market. Through the sentinel surveillance system, a decrease in Campylobacter infections during June 1999 was noticed. A model was generated with the reports from preceding years (1994 to 1998), and a prediction of the number of infections in 1999 was calculated. The model shows a significant decline (40%) in the number of infections, mainly because of the withdrawal of poultry. The use of a disaster as an epidemiologic tool offers a unique o

Campylobacteriosis is a collective description for infectious diseases caused by members of the bacterial genus Campylobacter. The only form of campylobacteriosis of major public health importance is Campylobacter enteritis due to C. jejuni and C. coli. Research and control efforts on the disease have been conducted more often in developed countries than developing countries. However, because of the increasing incidence, expanding spectrum of infections, potential of HIV-related deaths due to Campylobacter, and the availability of the complete genome sequence of C. jejuni NCTC 11168, interest

In 2001 in Germany, Campylobacter was second to Salmonella as the most frequent foodborne pathogen isolated from humans. This is also true for the major part of the European population with incidence data available, namely Germany, Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, Austria and Spain, with a total population of 154.5 million, and incidence rates for Salmonella and Campylobacter of 81.8/100 000 and 49.0/100 000 respectively. Countries where Campylobacter is predominant are the UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and The Netherlands, with a total population of 94.2 million, and incidence rates for

Forty diarrhoeic stool samples of domestic animal handlers in a rural area of India were cultured and screened for detection of Campylobacter jejuni by Co-agglutination technique (CoA). Seven C. jejuni strains were isolated by culture and 6 faecal samples gave positive CoA test. The specificity and sensitivity for negative and positive culture were 96.9% and 85.7% respectively. This is first report of detection of Campylobacter enteritis of human beings using CoA technique directly from stool samples.
