New born chicks can serve as an experimental animal model for human campylobacteriosis.

Campylobacter enteritis is an emerging food borne zoonotic disease. Improperly cooked chicken serve as a potential source for this infection. Diarrheogenic potential of Campylobacter jejuni is tested either by in-vivo rat ileal loop (RIL) test or by molecular methods. This study reveals that 3-day-old chicks can serve as an animal model for toxigenic C. jejuni.

Antibody responses to Campylobacter infections determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay: 2-year follow-up study of 210 patients.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was adapted to measure immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgM, and IgA classes of human serum antibody to Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. Heat-stable antigen, a combination of C. jejuni serotype O:1,44 and O:53 in the ratio 1:1, was used as a coating antigen in the ELISA test. A total of 631 sera from 210 patients with verified Campylobacter enteritis were examined at various intervals after infection, and a control group of 164 sera were tested to determine the cut-off for negative results. With a 90th percentile of specificity, IgG, IgM, and IgA

Campylobacter Enteritis and the Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

Campylobacter jejuni is one of the most common causes of bacterial gastroenteritis in the United States and worldwide with approximately 2.4 million infections per year in the United States. A now clearly recognized sequelae following Campylobacter infection is the Guillain-Barré syndrome, an acute immune-mediated attack on the peripheral nervous system. How Campylobacter induces Guillain-Barré syndrome is the subject of intense investigation, and this article discusses some of the recent advances in our understanding of the clinical, epidemiologic, and pathogenic features of the disease.

Relationship of Campylobacter toxigenicity in vitro to the development of postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome.

Campylobacter enteritis is associated with a significant risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome, but the mechanism is unknown. This study ascertained bowel symptoms in 93 patients 3 months after Campylobacter jejuni enteritis infection. The infecting organisms were cultured, and the effects of culture supernatants on toxin-sensitive epithelial cell monolayers (HEp-2, Green monkey kidney epithelial [Vero], and CHO-K1) were investigated. In all, 50, 43, and 41 of the isolates showed toxigenic effects on HEp-2, CHO-K1, and Vero cells, respectively. Persistently changed bowel habit was report

Bacterial genetic fingerprint: a reliable factor in the study of the epidemiology of human campylobacter enteritis?

The rate of human intestinal infections with more than a single Campylobacter strain was determined and the genetic variabilities of Campylobacter strains throughout an infection episode were investigated by means of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence PCR (ERIC-PCR). For 48 and 49 of 50 patients, all isolates from one sample showed identical patterns by PFGE and ERIC-PCR, respectively. Throughout an infection episode in 47 of 52 patients, the PFGE fingerprints of the isolates remained stable, while in 1 patient two different spe

Pre-exposure anti-Campylobacter jejuni immunoglobulin a levels associated with reduced risk of Campylobacter diarrhea in adults traveling to Thailand.

Diarrhea history questionnaires were administered to 369 U.S. military volunteers before and after deployment to Thailand. Additionally, blood samples obtained from a subset of 221 volunteers 1-3 weeks previously and 3-4 weeks after their deployment were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for immunoglobulin A to Campylobacter jejuni. Stool samples from personnel (including volunteers) contracting diarrhea in Thailand were cultured for enteric pathogens. Overall, 35.2% (130 of 369) of questionnaire respondents reported one or more diarrhea episodes during their trip. Volunteers with pr

An optimised recovery method for thermophilic Campylobacter from liver.

BACKGROUND: The past three decades have witnessed the rise of Campylobacter enteritis in man from virtual obscurity to notoriety, with present isolation rates superseding those of other enteric pathogens such as Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp. in most developed countries. Although campylobacters are not completely new to applied bacteriology, they have evaded traditional isolation techniques used for the isolation of pure cultures, apart from single isolations that were free from competing organisms. Offals, in particular liver have been described as both a source of campylobacters, as well

Myocarditis in a patient with salmonella and campylobacter enteritis.

Myocarditis associated with bacterial enteritis has only rarely been described and the pathogenesis is unclear. Herein we report a case where a young adult developed myocarditis during the acute stage of an infection with Salmonella heidelberg and Campylobacter jejunii/coli. The patient's troponin I value was elevated. We suggest that use of cardiac-sensitive troponins may be a useful tool for diagnosis of acute myocarditis in the context of bacterial enteritis. We also suggest the need for further investigation of the pathogenesis of myocarditis associated with enteric pathogens.

Comparison of SmaI-defined genotypes of Campylobacter jejuni examined by KpnI: a population-based study.

Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to analyse 147 isolates collected in two regions of Quebec province (Estrie and Montreal) between March 1998 and Feb. 1999, to determine the utility of molecular strain typing for a population-based collection of Campylobacter jejuni and to compare directly the discriminatory power of SmaI and KpnI restriction digests. With a combination of epidemiological criteria including space and time plus molecular strain typing, 49% of isolates from Estrie and 39% of isolates from Montreal were identified as belonging to a putative cluster. For 41% of the

Guillain-Barre syndrome and Campylobacter infection.

Campylobacter infection of the gastrointestinal tract has been observed as an antecedent illness in some patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS); these patients have been reported to have poor prognosis. We investigated 29 patients with GBS, admitted to our hospital from January 1996 to December 1999 for recent Campylobacter enteritis by culture of their stool specimens. Campylobacter upsaliensis and C. jejuni were isolated from stools of one patient each with acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) and acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) respectively. The patient w

Fate of Campylobacter jejuni in butter.

An outbreak of Campylobacter enteritis was associated with a restaurant in Louisiana during the summer of 1995. Thirty cases were identified, and four required hospitalization. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from the patients, and epidemiologic studies revealed illness associated with eating garlic butter served at the restaurant. Three batches of garlic butter prepared by the restaurant associated with the outbreak and a C. jejuni isolate obtained from a patient involved in the outbreak were used for studies to determine the fate of C. jejuni in garlic butter. Studies also were done to det

Detection and differentiation of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in broiler chicken samples using a PCR/DNA probe membrane based colorimetric detection assay.

Campylobacter enteritis in humans has been linked to consumption of poultry meat. Surveys show that 30-100% of poultry harbour Campylobacter as normal flora of the digestive tract which indicates a need to identify prevalent organism types in flocks and trace their epidemiology. In this study we describe a Campylobacter genus specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, amplifying the 16 S-23 S rRNA intergenic spacer region with an internal Campylobacter genus specific DNA probe and species specific probes for Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli designed for confirmation of the ampl

[Diagnosis and course of myocarditis: a survey in the medical clinics of Zurich University Hospital 1980 to 1998].

The clinical picture of myocarditis/myopericarditis is of importance in differential diagnosis, especially in younger patients with suspected myocardial infarction. Myocarditis/myopericarditis commonly presents with chest pain, and the diagnosis is usually established on clinical grounds. However, endomyocardial biopsy is necessary to confirm the diagnosis. We evaluated the characteristics of acute myocarditis over the years 1980-1998 in 54 patients of the Department of Medicine of the University Hospital, Zurich. Two to 6 patients per year were hospitalised with this diagnosis. In most cases

Increased rectal mucosal enteroendocrine cells, T lymphocytes, and increased gut permeability following acute Campylobacter enteritis and in post-dysenteric irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Post-dysenteric irritable bowel syndrome (PD-IBS) develops in up to 25% of patients following Campylobacter enteritis. Our aim was to define the pathological basis of this subgroup of IBS. METHODS: Twenty one patients (group 1) underwent serial rectal biopsy and gut permeability testing following acute Campylobacter enteritis as did 10 PD-IBS patients (group 2) and 12 asymptomatic controls. RESULTS: In group 1, enteroendocrine cell (EC) numbers were markedly increased initially and at six and 12 weeks (p<0.001) compared with controls. Gut permeability, as assessed by the

Different invasion phenotypes of Campylobacter isolates in Caco-2 cell monolayers.

The pathogenesis of campylobacter enteritis is not well understood, but invasion into and translocation across intestinal epithelial cells may be involved in the disease process, as demonstrated for a number of other enteric pathogens. However, the mechanisms involved in these processes are not clearly defined for campylobacters. In this study, isolates were compared quantitatively in established assays with the enterocyte-like cell line, Caco-2, to determine the extent to which intracellular invasion contributes to translocation across epithelial cell monolayers, and whether isolates vary in

Molecular epidemiological investigation of an outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni identifies a dominant clonal line within Scottish serotype HS55 populations.

Three molecular typing methods, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), ribotyping, and flagellin (flaA) gene typing, were used to discriminate within a group of 28 Campylobacter jejuni, heat-stable serotype 55 (HS55) isolates derived from cases of campylobacter enteritis occurring throughout Scotland, including 9 isolates associated with an outbreak. PFGE was found to be most discriminatory, identifying 6 distinct profiles, followed by ribotyping (5 profiles), and then flagellin gene typing (4 profiles). The coincidence of all three genotypic markers identified a dominant clonal line within

An outbreak of Campylobacter enteritis on an island resort, north Queensland.

An outbreak of Campylobacter enteritis among staff on a resort island in north Queensland is reported. Untreated rainwater and food from the staff dining room were initially suspected as possible sources of infection but Campylobacter species were not isolated from any environmental samples. Faecal contamination was detected in four rainwater tanks. A case control study involved a total of 23 cases (7 confirmed and 16 probable), 3 of whom required hospitalisation. There was a strong association between gastrointestinal illness and consumption of water from a dispenser in the staff restaurant t
