All children with evidence of xerophthalmia who were admitted to an inpatient facility for treatment of severe protein-calorie malnutrition and its complications were compared to other inpatients with severe PCM but free from signs or symptoms of vitamin A deficiency. Xerophthalmic inpatients were older and had more severe hypoproteinemia than inpatients without eye signs, and were more undernourished by anthropometric criteria than a comparison group matched for age, sex, and type of PCM. Children with more severe eye lesions were more retarded in growth than those with minimal ocular signs.

Characteristics of patients on penicillamine therapy for rheumatoid arthritis were correlated with the occurrence of different side-effects. Patients developing proteinuria tended to have lower sheep-cell agglutination test titres prior to therapy, but no other correlations were found. It is postulated that rheumatoid factor reacts with immune complexes, causing their precipitation and reducing renal glomerular deposition and therefore the incidence of proteinuria. Several techniques have been used to treat dry eye, to irrigate the eye surface, or to apply drugs in solution. The commonest method is to apply drops. But a technique is needed for giving solutions over long periods either as drops or continuously. The apparatus described here consists of a replaceable plastic tank under mechanical pressure attached to capillary tubing which is kept in contact with the inner canthus of the eye. It was found to alleviate symptoms in severe dry eye conditions not alleviated by other methods.

A Sjögren's syndrom was looked for systematically in 154 hematological patients, half of them with lymphoproliferative disorders, by means of three current diagnosis methods: the Schirmer's test, the tear lysozyme assay, and the salivary immunoglobulin assay. These tests, poorly specific, are frequently abnormal, but the coexistence of the three abnormalities in the same patient makes the diagnosis highly probable. This corresponded to 4 patients. Five cases of pseudolymphoma in Sjögren's syndrome were reported. Pseudolymphoma's pathological aspects described by Rothman then Talal are discussed. After recognition of the Sjögren's syndrome and a pseudolymphoma appearance, the risk of lymphomatous evolution enjoin a clinical close attention. Among our five cases, three had a peculiar evolution: one has presented and immunoblastic lymphoma (case 2). In an other case (case 3) the pathological aspect was very near to the angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy features. Waldenström's macroglobulinemia was cause of death of the last one (case 5).

The series consists of 12,059 children followed-up since their mothers' pregnancy. Of these children, 5.2 percent had visited an ophthalmological department during their first five years. Isolated glucocorticoid failure associated with achalasia of the cardia is described in two pairs of siblings in separate families. Defective tear production is also present in three of the patients, and one shows other signs of autonomic dysfunction. Two other families with adrenal insufficiency and achalasia are known. This unusual association probably represents a familial disorder of as yet unknown aetiology.

Three cases of exogenous mycotic infections of the eye are presented. The first is a case of keratitis in a patient suffering from glaucoma simplex who removed a foreign body from the cornea, caused by Fusarium solani, generally known as a saprophytic soil and plant inhabitant. The risk of cancer was ascertained in 136 women with sicca syndrome followed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Seven patients developed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma from 6 months to 13 years after their first admission to NIH. Levamisole has been used in several rheumatic diseases other than rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Eight children with corneal xerophthalmia (x2 or x3A) received standard high-protein diets and massive systemic vitamin A therapy. Retinoic acid, 0.1% in oil, was applied daily to one eye, and oil alone to the other. Topical retinoic acid proved safe and effective in speeding corneal healing, especially during the first critical days.
