Autoantibodies in Sjögren's syndrome (SS) were identified by their precipitin reactions with tissue antigens in immunodiffusion. The source of antigens was a sonicated extract of human lymphoid cells (WiI2) grown in tissue culture. Three distinct precipitin systems were identified and referred to as precipitins SS-A and SS-B, and rheumatoid arthritis precipitin. These studies show that precipitins SS-A and SS-B are present in high frequency in sera of patients with SS without associated rheuamtoid arthritis (RA) and are absent or present in low frequency in many other connective tissue disease

Esophageal monometric studies were done in 10 unselected patients with Sjögren's syndrome, not associated with other connective tissue or chronic active hepatic disease. Nine of the patients revealed abnormal esophageal motility, consisting of absent or decreased contractility in the upper third of the esophagus. Saline extracts of rabbit thymus were found to contain many nuclear antigens that reacted with antibodies in the sera of patients with systemic rheumatic diseases. A nutrition rehabilitation centre for treatment of children with xerophthalmia was established in Madurai, India. Treatment was based on provision of locally available food, rich in protein and beta-carotene and cheap enough for the families concerned to buy at home. This diet alone, with general medical treatment for other diseases, was sufficient to reverse conjunctival xerophthalmia and corneal xerosis. Sjögren's syndrome is a multisystemic connective tissue disease. The syndrome is associated with other major connective tissue disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis and others, Reticulo-endothelial malignances have repeatedly been reported in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. A clinical study of 20 patients with Sjögren's syndrome was performed in the Department of otolaryngology, Rikshospitalet, Oslo, Norway. A considerable complexity of symptoms was seen. One patient with malignant lymphoma and one with a thyroid carcinoma were encountered.

KCS in man is often associated with a systemic disease whose pathogenesis is still obscure. A spontaneous animal model resembling Sjögren's syndrome has been developed in the NZB and NZB-NZW mouse. Other spontaneous animal models analagous to lupus erythematosis and polyarteritis have been found in dogs and Aleutian mink, respectively. Central corneal perforations have traditionally been managed by conjunctival flaps, tissue adhesives, soft contact lenses, corneal patches and other conservative measures for the immediate preservation of the eye. An alternative method of treatment is immediate penetrating keratoplasty. We present the result of immediate keratoplasty for 25 eyes referred with acute central corneal perforations, 20 of herpetic origin and 5 with a chemical burn or dry eye syndrome. Dietary and biochemical data have indicated that hypovitaminosis A is a public health problem in Northeast Brazil. However, there are few reports regarding clinical signs of hypovitaminosis A. Beta2-Microglobulin is normally present in low concentrations in serum and other bodily fluids. The third case of myeloma presenting as a lacrimal gland tumor is reported. The lesion was originally diagnosed as a solitary extramedullary myeloma, but on follow-up, the patient was seen to develop other myelomas. This case illustrates the necessity for careful follow-up of patients with solitary myelomas, even in the absence of bone marrow pathology, for the solitary extramedullary myeloma may represent an early stage in the development of multiple myeloma.
