Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disorder involving orbital tissues. A receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) and its ligand high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein trigger inflammation and cell proliferation and are involved in the pathogenesis of various chronic inflammatory diseases. This study was aimed to evaluate RAGE and HMGB1 expression in GO to determine its potential clinical significance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study showing RAGE and HMGB1 expression in orbital tissue using immunohistochemistry. Sections of orbi

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is an inflammatory neuropathy, which commonly causes peripheral neuropathy. It has rarely been associated with cranial nerve hypertrophy and neuro-ophthalmic manifestations. Proptosis secondary to cranial nerve hypertrophy has been reported in association with CIDP. The authors present a case of a 67-year-old man with CIDP who presented with bilateral proptosis, strabismus, and episodes of globe subluxation. The proptosis was mainly attributed to significant enlargement of the extraocular muscles, in addition to bilateral enlarge

A 35-year-old female with a history of chronic extensive rhinosinusitis, previously treated twice with functional endoscopic sinus surgery, presented with recurrent dacryocystitis despite prior dacryocystorhinostomy. Histopathological specimens taken at the most recent sinus surgery demonstrated a lymphocytic inflammatory reaction without evidence of angiodestruction or necrosis. Flow cytometry was normal. Over the following 9 months, the patient developed worsening hypertelorism and bilateral recurrent acute dacryocystitis with a fistula tract to the skin. Neuroimaging revealed a hyperintense

BACKGROUND Anti-TNF-alpha therapies were the first class of biologics to be used in treatment of moderate to severe IBD. Immunosuppression status that develops from using anti-TNF-a therapies increases the risk of serious and opportunistic infections. We present here a rare case of serious infection that developed in an IBD patient while on anti-TNF therapy. CASE REPORT Our patient was a 14-year-old boy with a history of chronic sinusitis and ulcerative colitis who had been on infliximab therapy for the last 3 years. He presented with facial swelling and worsening constant frontal headache. Im

Pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (PCME), caused by chronic inflammation, is the most common cause of visual impairment in the medium-term after cataract surgery. Therefore, the prophylactic topical administration of combined steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs is commonly done. Drug-eluting intraocular lenses (IOLs) gained interest as an efficient way to overcome the compliance issues related to the use of ocular drops without the need for additional surgical steps. The incorporation of functional monomers and molecular imprinting were herein applied to design hydrogels suita

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder associated with fibrosis and abundant tissue lymphoplasmacytic infiltrations. It typically affects the pancreas, the salivary glands, and the retroperitoneal space. However, it might also involve multiple other organs, including the orbit and the thyroid. Recent studies have suggested that IgG4 plays a role in the pathophysiology of autoimmune thyroid diseases. This ultimately led to the establishment of new clinical entities called IgG4-related thyroid disease and thyroid disease with an elevation of IgG4. The aim

We present the case of an 8-year-old girl with chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) involving the orbit and facial bone and causing left optic neuropathy. She presented with intermittent left periorbital swelling and a history of CRMO diagnosed 5 years earlier. Her disease responded well to adalimumab; however, delayed presentation resulted in permanent unilateral optic nerve atrophy and reduced vision. Orbital inflammatory disease is a rare manifestation of CRMO, and early recognition of the disease and treatment may prevent irreversible vision loss.

Apoptosis is a natural physiological process involving programmed cell death. Thanks to this process, it is possible to maintain the homeostasis of the body and the immune system. Dysfunctions of this mechanism lead to development of autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis; these diseases are chronic and treatment is extremely difficult. In psoriasis (a skin disease), apoptosis disorders are manifested by keratinocyte proliferation dysfunction. Autoimmune diseases coexisting with psoriasis include multiple sclerosis, autoimmune thyroid disease, and diabetes, but the common pathogenesis of these

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis with a putative neoplastic and inflammatory nature. The disease is driven by mutations in proto-oncogenes such as BRAF and MEK, while immune-mediated mechanisms contribute to disease development and progression. The clinical presentation of ECD is highly heterogeneous, ranging from smouldering unifocal forms to multiorgan life-threatening disease. Almost any organ can be involved, but the most common lesions include long-bone involvement, retroperitoneal fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, pericardial and myocardial inf

Chronic eyelid edema may be a symptom of different disease. The most common are autoimmune diseases such as orbital pseudotumor, vasculitis, sarcoidosis, or impaired vascular or lymphatic drainage. Rarely has it been reported as the sole manifestation of the lymphoma. Eyelid lymphoma is a special clinical entity in the spectrum of hematological malignancies. Here we present our clinical experience with eyelids lymphomas. First case is a 76-year-old female patient with bilateral edema of upper eyelid non-responding to anti-inflammatory therapy. Histological examination diagnosed mantle cells ly

INTRODUCTION: Chronic inflammation is implicated in a multitude of diseases, including arthritis, neurodegeneration, autoimmune myositis, type 2 diabetes, rheumatic disorders, spondylitis, and cancer. Therefore, strategies to explore potent anti-inflammatory regimens are pivotal from a human-health perspective. Medicinal plants represent a vast unexplored treasure trove of therapeutically active constituents with diverse pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory properties. Herein, we evaluated Cousinia thomsonii, an edible medicinal herb, for its anti-inflammatory/immunomodulato

GO is the most frequent extrathyroidal manifestation of Graves' disease, although it may rarely occur in euthyroid/hypothyroid patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. It is a relatively infrequent disorder, and men tend to have more severe ocular involvement at an older age. The prevalence of GO is lower than in the past among patients with recent onset Graves' hyperthyroidism, and moderate-to-severe forms requiring aggressive treatments are no more than 5-6% of all cases of GO. After an initial inflammatory (active) phase and a phase of stabilization (plateau phase), GO tends to improve

Blood flow in sickle cell disease (SCD) can substantially differ from normal blood flow due to significant alterations in the physical properties of the red blood cells (RBCs). Chronic complications, such as inflammation of the endothelial cells lining blood vessel walls, are associated with SCD, for reasons that are unclear. Here, detailed boundary integral simulations are performed to investigate an idealized model flow flow in SCD, a binary suspension of flexible biconcave discoidal fluid-filled capsules and stiff curved prolate capsules that represent healthy and sickle RBCs, respectively,
