Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

Pseudo-differential operators and generalized random fields over tori.

Starting from a synthetic sample with composition Al2(SO4)3·16.6H2O, the high-temperature- and moisture-dependent behavior of alunogen has been unraveled by TGA measurements, in situ powder X-ray diffraction as well as by gravimetric moisture sorption/desorption studies. Heating experiments using the different techniques show that alunogen undergoes a first dehydration process already starting at temperatures slightly above 40 °C. The crystalline product of the temperature-induced dehydration corresponds to the synthetic equivalent of meta-alunogen and has the following chemical composition: A

DOTATATE-PET in custom spheno-orbital implant design for meningiomas with orbital involvement: a case series.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperostosing spheno-orbital meningiomas (SOMs) infiltrate bone and cause bone overgrowth leading to progressive visual and cosmetic deformities. DOTA0-Tyr3-octreotate (DOTATATE) is a somatostatin receptor-targeted PET ligand that enables highly sensitive identification of meningiomas. This ligand is useful in defining the extent of bone infiltration by the meningioma, which can be difficult to detect on standard CT and MRI. In this study, the authors aimed to provide a pragmatic technical framework for integrating molecular imaging, navigation, and patient-specific reconstruction i

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Relationship between Enophthalmos and Orbital Volume Changes following Costal Cartilage Grafting for Traumatic Enophthalmos.

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic enophthalmos is a common complication of orbital wall fracture. Costal cartilage grafting is the preferred surgical approach for traumatic enophthalmos. However, widely used clinical guidelines have not been established regarding the optimal volume of costal cartilage grafts required to correct enophthalmos. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the changes in the orbital volume (OV) and enophthalmos before and after surgery in patients who underwent costal cartilage grafting, and to analyze the relationship between them. METHODS: The medical records of 12 patients

Rhabdomyomatous Mesenchymal Hamartoma: An Acquired Plaque-Type Variant Case Report.

Virtual surgical planning (VSP) and three-dimensional (3D) printing have advanced surgical reconstruction of orbital defects. Individualized 3D models of patients' orbital bony and soft tissues provide the surgeon with corrected orbital volume based on normalized anatomy, precise location of critical structures, and when needed a better visualization of the defect or altered anatomy that are paramount in preoperative planning. The use of 3D models preoperatively allows surgeons to improve the accuracy and safety of reconstruction, reduces intraoperative time, and most importantly lowers the ra

A case of providing a surgical treatment for patient with silent sinus syndrome.

This article presents a case report of patient with silent sinus syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by reduction in size of sinus with accumulation of pathological content inside it due to obstruction of osteomeatal complex, development of enophthalmos and resorption of bone walls. Such process occurs because of hypoventilation of maxillary sinus and followed by development of chronical maxillary sinusitis. Except generally accepted clinical observations, computer tomography scan of paranasal sinuses and endoscopic endonasal examination are essential for the verification of this syndrome

Unveiling the Silent Sinus Syndrome: A Familial Case Series Exploring Chronic Maxillary Atelectasis.

Chronic maxillary atelectasis (CMA) is characterized by a persistent reduction in maxillary sinus volume, resulting from inward bowing of its antral walls. Silent sinus syndrome (SSS), a rare manifestation of CMA, typically presents with significant bony structural changes but without the usual nasal symptoms. The primary clinical presentation of SSS often includes enophthalmos, which may lead to referrals to ophthalmology due to perceived ocular asymmetry. This case series presents the familial occurrence of CMA and SSS in three male family members, each exhibiting different degrees of nasal

Horner's Syndrome as a Rare Complication of Thyroidectomy With Central Neck Dissection: A Case Report and Review of Potential Mechanisms.

Horner's syndrome (HS) is characterized by miosis, ptosis, enophthalmos, anhidrosis, and vascular dilation on one side of the face, resulting from an interruption in the oculosympathetic pathway. Here, we present a 55-year-old female patient diagnosed with thyroid carcinoma metastasis via fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the right supraclavicular lymph node. She underwent total thyroidectomy and right central lymph node dissection. On the first postoperative day, the patient developed right-sided miosis and upper eyelid ptosis, leading to a diagnosis of HS. Although this rare complication foll

[SILENT SINUS SYNDROME].

Silent sinus syndrome (SSS) is a rare condition, usually consisting of asymptomatic spontaneous collapse of the sinus walls and orbit floor. It is often found incidentally on MRI or CT imaging for other pathology work-up. The etiology of SSS remains controversial. Patients typically deny preexisting sinus disease or orbitofacial trauma. Clinical appearance usually consists of asymptomatic enophthalmos and altered facial appearance. Nevertheless, diplopia, nasal discharge, post-nasal drip, facial pressure, or pain may also be present. Most authors postulate that the collapse of the inferior orb

Transconjunctival Endoscopic Repair of a Trapdoor Blowout Fracture in a Child.

Even facial fractures are common in the pediatric population, and the management of blowout fractures contains various surgical methods. Here, we report a child with a blowout fracture handled with transconjunctival endoscopic repair (TCER). A 9-year-old girl was referred with complaints of left eye swelling and erythema after blunt trauma. Physical examination revealed enophthalmos, hypoesthesia in the left cheek, and restriction of left eye movements upwards and downwards. Computed tomography showed a left orbital blowout fracture with herniation of the inferior rectus muscle and soft tissue

National Analysis of Surgical Intervention for Orbital Floor Fractures: Implications on Early Versus Late Repair.

INTRODUCTION: The timing of intervention for patients with orbital floor fractures is controversial. Some data suggest that symptomatic patients have improved outcomes with early surgery, whereas other studies demonstrate equivalent outcomes even if patients were observed for weeks to months. Our study aims to evaluate national trends and safety outcomes of timing of intervention for isolated orbital floor fractures. METHODS: From the Merative™ MarketScan® Research Databases, patients were queried from January 2007 to December 2022. ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT codes were used to identify patients
