Three cases of painful ophthalmoplegia have been described in which symptoms suggesting a tumor of the orbit justified neuroradiological assessment. Phlebography in each case revealed stenosis of the superior ophthalmic vein in its third portion, and non-opicification of the cavernous sinus. Hirtz incidences revealed contralateral cavernous sinus opacification and venous drainage through the coronary sinus. These neuradiological findings helped to differentiate this syndrome from other affections which have similar signs and symptoms.

Retro-orbital tissue membranes have been shown to have adenylate cyclase activity which can be stimulated by thyrotropin and by an exophthalmogenic factor derived from the thyrotropin molecule by partial pepsin digestion. The incidence of Graves' disease and its response to treatment have been studied in Iceland, where the main environmental factor possibly affecting Graves' disease is a high iodine intake. The incidence was found to be similar or lower to that reported for Europe. The response to treatment with drugs and radioiodine does not differ from that found in other countries but recurrent hyperthyroidism after subtotal thyroidectomy is more common in Iceland.

Unilateral exophthalmos developed shortly after treatment in three patients with chromophobe adenoma of the pituitary gland and craniopharyngioma. In two patients, the exophthalmos followed surgery, while in the third it did not appear until after radiation treatment. The pathogenesis of the exophthalmos in these cases in obscure. However, the other findings and subsequent course indicate that the exophthalmos is not due to recurrence of the neoplasm nor to a complication of therapy.

The authors study the epidemiological conditions of the appearance of Burkitt's disease on the Ivory Coast. This condition represents 4.12% of cancers observed in this country. From a thorough study of the differences in temperature, relative humidity, vapour pressure, hours of sunlight, amount of rainfall, they were able to pick out that equatorial forest zones are more at risk than the savannah zones. The climatic conditions in the forest render intervention by a vector plausible, either directly or indirectly via malaria or other parasitic infestations.

Two cases of unilateral proptosis associated with intracranial schwannomas in children are described. In both cases, tumour occupied both the orbit and middle cranial fossa, where in one case the intracranial component was extradural and in the other intracerebral. Possible sites of tumour origin are discussed.

Chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and hyperthyroidism coexisted in two children. In one, hyperthyroidism developed nine years after the onset of purpura. In the other, the two diseases appeared concomitantly. It is important to distinguish the thrombocytopenia due to ITP from that due to antithyroid drugs.

Three patients with hemiagenesis of the typhoid gland are described. One was clinically euthyroid, whereas the other two were more unusual in that one had coincident Graves' disease with thyrotoxicosis, and one had primary myxodema. In all three cases diagnosis of hemiagenesis was established by the administration of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Ultrasonic A scans of the thyroid have been carried out on 47 patients with suspected thyroid disease. It was possible to measure the antero-posterior diameter of each lobe and to identify whether the tissue was homogeneous, nodular or cystic. A 16-year-old girl presented with progressive, painless proptosis of the left eye. X-ray studies revealed an extensive lesion involving the left orbit, antrum, and middle cranial fossa. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst, and the lesion was surgically excised. There has been no evidence of recurrence after three years. In a review of the literature, we were able to find only seven other cases of aneurysmal bone cyst involving the orbit.
