Clinical analysis of 66 cases with orbital apex syndrome: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) is a rare ocular complication characterized by vision loss and ophthalmoplegia from infection, inflammation, trauma, neoplasms, and vascular causes, due to the involvement of ocular motor nerves in the anatomical region of the orbital apex. The epidemiological features of OAS are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to present the clinical features and determine the causes to evaluate the visual prognosis of patients with OAS. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 126 adult patients with clinically confirmed OAS by reviewing the electronic

Association of plasma ADMA, FABP4 levels, and AIP with increased cardiovascular disease risk in Graves' disease: an exploratory pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder characterized by hyperthyroidism and is often associated with diffuse goiter, Graves' ophthalmopathy, antithyroid peroxidase antibodies, TSH receptor antibodies, and high serum thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) levels. Hyperthyroidism causes changes in the cardiovascular system that can be explained by the direct effects of thyroid hormones on vascular smooth muscle cells and cardiomyocytes. On the one hand, heart rate, myocardial contractility, preload, blood volume, and tissue thermogenesis increase, while on the other hand, afterl

[Glial Progenitor Cell Therapy Improves Mitochondrial Function in the Hippocampus of 5xFAD Mice, but Does Not Restore the Multiscale Structure of Behavioral Stress Response].

Cell therapy is increasingly used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including cancer, immune system disorders, and neurodegeneration. Stem cells secrete growth factors, signaling molecules, and extracellular vesicles, that can be used to treat neurological diseases and promote neuronal regeneration. Transgenic 5xFAD mice, which are a model for Alzheimer's disease (AD), were used in this study. The mice were 7 months old and received retro-orbital injections of glial progenitor cells (GPCs) once a week for 4 months. At 11 months, their behavior was analyzed using a multichannel actigrap

Orbital Tumors: What the Radiologist Needs to Know from the Orbital Surgeon's Perspective.

Orbital tumors are diverse and relatively rare. Imaging studies such as MR imaging, computed tomography (CT), PET/CT, and ultrasound are essential for narrowing the differential diagnosis before surgery. The specific surgical approach for orbital tumors depends on location of the mass, size, and proximity to important orbital structures. The authors advocate close collaboration between the neuroradiologist and the orbital surgical team through weekly or monthly teaching and planning conferences and collaborative investigations that can ultimately lead to new discoveries and more reliable diagn

Imaging Findings after Multidisciplinary Treatment for Orbital and Ocular Adnexal Cancers.

Various modalities, including computed tomography (CT), MR imaging, and PET/CT, are used in the radiological assessment of the treated orbit. Understanding the different surgical procedures used for orbital and ocular adnexal tumors and the imaging characteristics of recurrent tumors after complex reconstructive procedures in the orbital region is critical. Knowledge of treatment complications, including infection, osteoradionecrosis, radiation necrosis, radiation-associated secondary sarcomas, and tumor recurrence, is also important. To assist the radiologist, this article highlights several

A large intraorbital arachnoid cyst with preserved visual acuity in a 3-year-old female: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are the most common brain cysts, comprising 1% of intracranial lesions, with a higher prevalence in children (2.6%) than adults (0.3%-1.7%). Intraorbital ACs are extremely rare, with only a few cases reported to date, especially in children. While most ACs do not exhibit any symptoms, some cases of symptomatic ACs require surgical intervention to prevent brain damage. This article presents a unique case of a large intraorbital AC with preserved visual acuity in a 3-year-old female with a concise literature review of all intraorbital AC cases reported to date.

ProptoView: AI-based digital exophthalmometry using multi-view facial images in a multinational validation study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate proptosis measurement is vital for managing thyroid eye disease (TED) and other orbital conditions. However, current approaches have certain limitations: the Hertel exophthalmometer is convenient but imprecise, while computed tomography (CT) is accurate but costly and exposes patients to radiation. METHODS: We developed ProptoView, an AI-based digital exophthalmometer, using 5676 images from 2516 eyes across 1258 visits of 763 TED patients with CT and Hertel measurements. For external validation, we used an additional 644 images from 648 eyes of 324 patients with TED and

One hotspot RB1 mutation disrupt RB1 function founded in a Chinese patient.

INTRODUCTION: Retinoblastoma is divided into two clinical types, sporadic and heritable, and is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in infancy and childhood. It was the first malignancy to demonstrate the genetic etiology of cancer, with the RB1 gene as the only pathological gene present in heritable cases. Although the RB1 mutation p.E125* had been previously reported in other retinoblastoma patients, it lacked functional analysis. METHODS: In this study, we identified the RB1 p.E125* mutation in a bilateral retinoblastoma patient from China. We investigated the distribution, cell

Dynamics of ophthalmological symptoms due to vascular pathology of the central nervous system.

An analysis of the patient's medical history with changes in the organ of vision due to TBI was performed. The difficulties in making the correct diagnosis in our case were associated with the delayed onset of the first symptoms affecting the organ of vision and their slow progression, the presence of other concomitant diseases, and the absence of classic complaints (such as constant noise in the head). More than two months passed from the first signs of the disease to the correct diagnosis. With the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, the number of traumatic

Molecular and cellular processes connecting type 2 diabetes to Alzheimer's disease, focusing on oxidative stress, metabolic dysfunction, and neurodegeneration.

Advancing age has been associated with an imbalance between a gradual increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and a decline in the efficiency of antioxidant defense mechanisms. Due to the fact that organisms are constantly exposed to endogenous and exogenous ROS sources, this condition of oxidative stress promotes a systemic pro-oxidant state that, in conjunction with many other risk factors, progressively worsens throughout life, triggering the development of chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). These diseases have emerged as closely inter

Blocking the m6Am methyltransferase PCIF1 releases STAT1-mediated Th1 immunity to potentiate cancer immunotherapy.

Naïve T cells maintain a delicate balance between quiescence and rapid activation, which involves multiple layers of regulation beyond transcription. Here, we identify the RNA modification N6,2'-O-dimethyladenosine (m6Am) and its methyltransferase PCIF1 as critical enforcers of T cell quiescence. During CD4+ T cell activation, m6Am levels are dynamically downregulated. T-cell-specific PCIF1 knockout (cKO) mice exhibit potent tumor suppression, driven by enhanced Th1 differentiation and subsequent amplification of NK cell cytotoxicity. Mechanistically, PCIF1 represses STAT1 translation via m6Am

Restricted Diffusion on Diffusion-Weighted MRI in a Cat With Orbital Lymphoma and Presumptive Pulmonary Lymphoma.

A 10-year-old Turkish Angora cat presented with left conjunctival swelling and exophthalmos. Ultrasound and computed tomography revealed an orbital mass and a well-defined pulmonary mass in the left cranial lobe. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), demonstrated restricted diffusion in the orbital (apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC] = 0.56 × 10-3 mm2/s) and pulmonary masses (ADC = 0.53 × 10-3 mm2/s), suggesting high cellularity. Histopathology confirmed orbital lymphoma, and pulmonary lymphoma was suspected on the basis of cytology. To our knowledge,

The role of the FT3/FT4 ratio in predicting remission and relapse in pediatric Graves' disease.

UNLABELLED: Long-term antithyroid drug (ATD) therapy is often required in pediatric Graves' disease, yet adherence can be challenging. Therefore, identifying reliable predictors of remission and relapse is crucial for optimizing disease management. This study aimed to evaluate the role of the baseline FT3/FT4 ratio in predicting remission and relapse, alongside other potential markers, including TRAb levels, thyroid volume, and body mass index (BMI). This retrospective, single-center study included pediatric patients diagnosed with Graves' disease and treated with ATDs. Age, sex, BMI, thyroid

The Synergistic Neuroprotective Effect of Honokiol and Magnolol Against Amyloid-β and MPP+-Induced Neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y Cells: An Antioxidant, Molecular Orbital, and ADMET Study.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the two main neurodegenerative diseases and cause disability and death in patients worldwide. Neurodegeneration is characterized by a progressive loss of neuronal function and structure, causing enormous impairment in cognitive-motor function. Magnolol and honokiol are isomeric biphenyl neolignans and have exhibited neuroprotective activity in previous studies. Hence, we assessed and compared honokiol, magnolol, and mixtures of honokiol and magnolol in honokiol/magnolol molar ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 3:1 in terms of their neurotoxicity,
