Risk of Ophthalmologic Comorbidities in Hidradenitis Suppurativa Patients.

PURPOSE: To assess associations between hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and inflammatory and infectious eye diseases. METHODS: We created a matched cohort of adults with and without a diagnosis of HS and calculated relative risk (RR) ratios for inflammatory and infectious eye diseases using the Global TriNetX Database. We also calculated RR ratios for infectious and inflammatory eye diseases in HS patients based on the use of biologic medications. RESULTS: Based on our cohort of 57,749 adults with HS, we found an increased risk for corneal ulcers (RR: 1.66, p = 0.001), marginal corneal ulcers

Outbreak of Neisseria meningitidis Conjunctivitis in Military Trainees - Texas, February-May 2025.

Viral and allergic conjunctivitis are more common than bacterial conjunctivitis in healthy immunocompetent adults. Neisseria meningitidis is an uncommon cause of bacterial conjunctivitis. During February-May 2025, an outbreak of 41 meningococcal conjunctivitis cases occurred among healthy, communally housed, military trainees at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas; all had received the quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine. One patient was hospitalized with periorbital cellulitis and received intravenous antibiotics; all other patients were treated successfully with topical anti

Mycoplasma-Induced Rash and Mucositis or Steven-Johnson Syndrome.

Mycoplasma-induced rash and mucositis (MIRM), has been recently distinguished as an entity distinct from the spectrum of Steven-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). It is characterized by a younger age of onset, predominant mucosal lesions and sparse skin involvement, in contrast to widespread cutaneous lesions in TEN/SJS. While therapy with azithromycin and a short course of corticosteroids suffices in the majority of cases, intravenous immunoglobulin and cyclosporine may be useful in refractory cases. The authors report a 6-y-old girl with mucopurulent conjunctivitis, hem

Actinomyces ductular dacryoadenitis resulting in a lacrimal gland abscess.

Lacrimal gland ductulitis is a rare infection of the lacrimal gland ductules. Individuals affected report a history of chronic mucopurulent conjunctivitis with "stringy" discharge. All patients are clinically noted to have an inflamed lacrimal gland ductule. Prior reports have suggested Actinomyces species as the "probable" etiology. We report the findings of a 42-year-old male found to have lacrimal gland ductulitis with a lacrimal gland abscess, confirmed by radiologic studies. Surgical drainage was necessitated and performed. Histopathologic analysis confirmed colonization by Actinomyces spe

Management of giant fornix syndrome with irrigation with povidone-iodine.

Giant fornix syndrome (GFS) was first described as a cause for a relapsing mucopurulent conjunctivitis. Predominantly elderly patients have enlarged superior fornices from superior aponeurosis dehiscence that permits the accumulation of protein coagulum that is colonised by bacteria. Established treatment includes the use of intensive topical antibiotic and corticosteroid. We describe a case of a 98-year-old woman with GFS who did not respond to several weeks of intensive (two hourly) treatment with topical prednisolone 1% drops and chloramphenicol. Subsequent additional regular sweeping of th

[Cowpox virus infection in an alpaca (Vicugna pacos) - clinical symptoms, laboratory diagnostic findings and pathological changes].

Orthopoxvirus infections appear to be rare in South American Camelids, because only a few cases have been reported in the literature. Based on a generalized infection with cowpox virus in an alpaca, the clinical symptoms, laboratory diagnostic findings and the pathological changes are described. The case history showed a long treatment because of chronic skin lesions. The main clinical symptom was miliary papules over the entire skin. Furthermore, a bilateral mucopurulent conjunctivitis occurred as well as excessive salivation due to a severe erosive-ulcerative stomatitis. Although the animal

Listeria monocytogenes endophthalmitis following keratoconjunctivitis.

Endophthalmitis due to endogenous or exogenous bacteria is a rare infection of the eye. We report a case of endophthalmitis following Listeria monocytogenes keratoconjunctivitis in a 27-year-old healthy white male presenting with hand motion visual acuity, right eye mucopurulent conjunctivitis, elevated intraocular pressure, and pigmented hypopyon 6 months post-keratectomy. The conjunctivitis was unresponsive to a 5-day course of topical tobramycin eye drops, and the patient developed keratitis with pain that progressed to endophthalmitis after 21 days. Diagnostic B-scan revealed vitreous exud

Ocular myasis and associated mucopurulent conjuctivitis acquired occupationally: A case study.

Ocular myasis and associated mucopurulent conjunctivitis in human eyes is a rare phenomenon. However, if the sheep bot fly abounds and poor hygienic environment prevails, the Oestrous ovis deposits its larvae in the conjunctival eye sac of human. The present paper reports a case study of ocular myasis among sheep farm workers caused by Oestrous ovis. The ocular myasis and the associated mucopurulent conjunctivitis are occupationally acquired in these cases. This study also suggests the treatment of patients and the recovery of the larvae.

The Relationship between chlamydia trachomatis and chlamydia pneumoniae as the cause of neonatal conjunctivitis (ophthalmia neonatorum).

The authors examined 130 newborns and nursery children from September 1999 till May 2003 from the Prague district for the surmise of chlamydial conjunctivitis. Chlamydia infections were detected in conjunctival smears. Chlamydia trachomatis was confirmed in 20 (15.3%) using ligase chain reaction and C. pneumoniae in 16 (12.3%) children using an indirect immunofluorescent method. Direct captures of chlamydial infections of newborns were included in the study. The authors had also examined 671 newborns in a maternity hospital from January 2002 till May 2003. Conjunctival scraping had been done i

An outbreak of Pasteurella pneumotropica in genetically modified mice: treatment and elimination.

A closed breeding colony comprising genetically engineered, wild-type, and stock mice presented with varying degrees of bilateral mucopurulent conjunctivitis and panophthalmitis. The one mouse with unilateral corneal ulceration, a knockout animal, was submitted for necropsy, and bacterial culture samples were obtained from the affected eye and uterus. In addition, ocular swabs from another 12 clinically affected animals, consisting of knockout, transgenic, wild-type, and stock mice, were submitted for bacterial culture analysis. All samples revealed pure cultures of Pasteurella pneumotropica.

Association of Moraxella ovis with keratoconjunctivitis in mule deer and moose in Wyoming.

Six cases of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and moose (Alces alces) in Wyoming (USA) were investigated during fall and winter of 1995 and 1996. Excessive lacrimation, mucopurulent conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal opacity were observed in mule deer. Moose had severe mucopurulent conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal ulceration. Hemolytic, non-piliated Moraxella ovis was isolated from two mule deer and two moose. We attempted to reproduce IKC in three mule deer fawns using an isolate of M. ovis from a clinically affected mule deer. These fawns did
